      There was a concept back in the 80s for a mine that would pop up into the air, aim itself and fire a HEAT type molten metal jet through the top armor of Soviet tanks. Looked kind of like a frisbee IIRC. Don't know if any were actually built...

      I love how they say "take out targets", when it literally means killing men. This type of sanitized speech allows weapons manufactures to separate the business of killing people with innocuous sounding words like "targets" and phrases like "taken out". "Taking out a target", means shredding human flesh with red hot steel fragments. After a nice "take out", what's left of the man/woman/child is scooped up with shovels and thrown into garbage bins.

    I recall during a firefight in 69 receiving fire support from an old Chaffee tank chassis fitted out with an outdated 40mm twin Bofors AA ship mount.
    I think it was affectionately known as a 'Duster'.
    Extremely effective and impressed by the continual stream of fused AA airburst ammo. That was 1969.

      Swedish IFV CV9040 still uses the Bofors 40mm, slightly longer barrel than the WW2 version.

      hard to improve on such an excellent, proven design. When ship's air defence systems moved to missiles, it wasn't obsoleted, just repurposed with new roles and more modern ammo.
      The M42 (Chaffee chassis + Bofors) was just one simple but very effective effort.

    There’s a lot of advantages to this round but the fuse setter allows it to be added onto the cannon itself without modifications to the weapon! The Airburst is awesome!

    I never knew a 40mm could even penetrate targets such as these, I thought it was more of a way of peppering the enemy with shrapnel rather then penetrating steel, but here you go.

      Normally your average 40mm grenade shell is gonna be pure HE. These ones are just insane. Penetrating at least 65mm of RHA is no joke for a tiny little round like that, on top of the fact that it spray shrapnel in all directions as any other HE grenade would. This would be incredibly lethal against lightly armored targets like IFVs and armored cars.
      The guy even said chunks of the concrete wall flew 15m backwards. That’s a scary amount of power.

    I used to carry an m203 and when i saw that 65mm plate my first thought was "wow, that's gutsy to demonstrate the limits of your munitions. I mean, it gives any potential hostile a reference to defeat your product, but hey, it's an A for guts"

    Nice work. Hell of a weapons system. Interesting to see that it programs after the shot, vs. the OIWS's method of programming the round in the breach.

      By using 'after launch' programming it means the weapon used to fire the grenade doesn't matter. You can fit it to anything. Same tech could also be used on larger calibers.

    FYI, this isn't the type of 40mm ammo you fire off from an under barrel launcher, this is a much longer, heavier 40mm with a lot more room for explosive filler and advanced fusing, as well as enough propellant to throw it 4x faster, too, the us employs the same high velocity 40mm in the mk19

    I don't know if anyone from Nammo actually reads this, but you should look at developing a similar airburst round in 30 x 113mm for the M230 chain gun. This gun is seeing increasing use, especially with similar RWS mounts, and is being pitched for use on all sorts of smaller vehicles (think JLTV.) AFAIK there is no airburst munition for it. There is an opportunity here.

    Radio frequency detonation has been a technology for decades, VT delay fused shells were used in the Pacific theater to down Japanese aircraft at a higher rate than conventional shells. Nice to see it being applied to 40mm grenades, thanks to miniaturization of components.

      That’s not what this is. This is not radar proximity fused.
      This round is timer fused. The only innovation is that the timer is set by short range radio when the round leaves the barrel. The timing information is derived from the laser range finder on the optics mount.

    Reminds me when I was a snake driver and used thumper configuration on front turret. 40mm grenade launcher would go thump thump thump. To turn people into monkey meat, flechette rockets did the trick with much wider dispersal area. When nails enter a human body, they bounce of bone and shred meat. War has blessed us with so many wonderful things.

    An excellent improvement to the 40mm grenade, who's main benefit was already against targets in defilade or behind light cover like a brick wall. The addition of a HEAP warhead is fantastic as well, making it now useful against moderately armored targets and heavy cover like reinforced concrete walls.

      Unless your house is huge, you likely wouldn't have enough range for the round to arm. It takes...15(?) Meters in flight before it would detonate. Unless these removed that safety feature in favor of the programmable bits.
      Even so, inside a structure, even if the shrapnel didn't get you, the overpressure would.
      Stick to buckshot. I prefer 4 buck in a magnum load lol
      *don't. I know he's joking, i know I'm joking about everything except the buckshot, so just... don't lol

      Tough to get the range to a moving target without search/lock radar, and 40mm grenades only range out to 1500 m (and that with a lot of barrel elevation / dispersion).
      This is a cool tool for vehicle patrols in urban environments.

    a slow-mo would have been great; it really helps with just visually assessing the effectiveness of shrapnel - it all just happens way to fast for the human eye and the aftermath isn't enough to really appreciate how devastating the effect is

    It was programmed right before launch or after launch mid air right afyer leaving the gun barrel?
    If so, can it be defeated mid air with similar radio command? ie. Cancelling the round by detonating it mid air before it reaches its target, or probably completely turned it into dud mid air during flight?

    Every American Embassy overseas needs to have a few of these on the premises for emergencies. Can you imagine about six of these in Bengazi when that happened? Game over...
    I was in Tunisia when they stormed the American Embassy- wish there had been a few there...
