  • Caravan Of Garbage has returned to look at what is probably considered the second most disappointing prequel trilogy of all time. Director of The Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson reluctantly returns to the directors chair for 2013's An Unexpected Journey, the first very long entry in an adaptation of a very short book. Come with us as we talk about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey and twelve mostly interchangeable tiny bearded men. Thanks for listening to our review!

    Look. Just to get ahead of it, when we recorded this and I complained about Gandalf being overpowered I forgot the moment in Lord Of The Rings when he got lightening to hit his sword then he stabbed a fire monster to death. I'd like to add that in the novel, Tolkien casually mentions that they passed Stone Giants when passing through the mountains. The film turns this into an entire sequence where the Stone Giants form the mountains themselves such that a mountain gets up and punches another mountain in the face while the party tries to hold on and there's a lightning storm flashing like crazy. I know that people vommitted during these frames per second, but I find that hilariously over-the-top filler.

    It’s not that it was filmed in 5k. It’s that there’s virtually zero motion blur from the high frame rate. That combined with the way they kept everything ultra sharp in post production, or even sharpened it more rather than softening it like they do in real movies, is what creates such an unpleasant aesthetic feel to these movies. It’s a comedy of errors. But the lack of motion blur is 98% of what makes it look like a shitty high school play recorded on an HD handicam.

    • @neighbourhoodmusician
      @neighbourhoodmusician Před rokem +35

      Although you are correct, it's not just a lack of motion blur from a high frame rate, it's also just the high playback frame rate. We are used to our films being 24 fps and, regardless of blur or sharpness, that's what makes something look like a 'film' or 'movie'. Anything significantly north of 30 fps just starts to look too 'television' or 'home movie'. Something in our brains just feels like low frame rate is more epic. Maybe our brains fill in the gaps more with low fps or something. Even just upping the frame rate on the original LOTR films using AI makes it look infinitely cheaper: czcams.com/video/m_xxxIPKEXQ/video.html

    • @itsd0nk
      @itsd0nk Před rokem +14

      @@neighbourhoodmusician yeah very true. They are inherently related. Films shot traditionally at 24fps will even have scenes with less motion blur by lowering the shutter angle to get a more stuttery effect, like in Saving Private Ryan. Those scenes still feel like a movie because of the frame rate. That hyper fluid motion of high frame rate and low motion blur makes it feel all wrong.

    • @mss11235
      @mss11235 Před rokem +11

      The inherent problem with frame rate filming and/or scaling is basically two parts: what we are used to in film medium and how our brains process the motion in-between frames. The latter, to me, should not be an issue for people: we USED TO be used to coming in black and white, and we chose to put more detail on screen. I have no problems with higher frame rates of better filmed IF THOSE FRAMES are acquired authentically and not pumped out by a shitty algorithm:
      Imagine you are watching a race between 2 race cars from one camera that start from a still start over 100 meters. If it was filmed over 2 seconds and the winning car's start to finish time was 2 seconds, and we only have the first and last frame, cool. If you have a camera that is twice as good then you get to see an extra frame during those two seconds and the lead car, you would assume is probably closer to the start line than the end line. The problem with motion smoothing on your TV and done with shitty algorithms is that they just take the average of two frames and smack, essentially, "midpoints" of those images everywhere. Which is a problem. Because that breaks the entire idea in physics of acceleration. Almost no movement we see in nature is done via "constant speed." That's why I immediately always know when watching sports on a television that someone has that shit turned on: a fast moving soccer ball or football or gridiron ball ALWAYS moves unnaturally because the motion of the ball LITERALLY appears jerky.
      In the Hobbit movies, because they acquired frames genuinely and not with an algorithm. The "unnaturalness" you feel comes 1000% not from frame rates being "too high" but instead from a combination of your brain not being used to better technology cameras, shitty CGI, and unconvincing 3D.

    Well, the thing with the hobbit wasn't so much about not allowing Sauron to get a Dragon later, it was more about getting a force to protect the north east of middle earth. After the defeat of Smaug, a lot of men and dwarfs went back to live in those hills and they fortified the lonely mountain and the lake. During the war of the ring, a great force of orcs and men attacked those places and if those people were not there to protect that flank, the Green forest of Legolas would have fallen, probably even Imladris (Rivendel). Rohan woudn't have had a chance against Orthanc. Just imagine Theoden fighting a freaking dragon during the battle in Helm's Deep.

    RE: Gandlaf's magic
    Its best to think of it like Fate's magic rather than D&Ds, he doesn't have a set of spells he can cast with spell slots, he's got a series of things he can do even as Gandalf the Grey(know things lost or unseen including just creating light, reveal true forms such as imposing his true self to inspire awe/fear or just routing out pretenders, inspire people to be where they need to be, healing although only ever enough for someone to play their part in the great song, etc).
    He has a magic ring he uses for fire magic, which he often combines with light or his ability to mess with what's observed or not to great effect(like mixing fireworks with pinecones so he appears to be making them into grenades to scare off attackers in a forrest).
    His magic is not really easy to explain because it's all about supporting the song of creation(which says Sauron will lose and magic will fade), the more inline with the goal the more he can do, the more against the song the less effective he becomes. In fact because he died trying so hard to make the song happen he got a major power boost because Eru was so impressed and wanted him to finish the story.
    I don't think you can make a D&D character for Gandalf as a result, his magic is just too inconsistent for those rules; meanwhile Fate which rewards playing into destiny for precogs/destiny-aflicted main characters would play into this, the more you try to make the key story beats happen the easier the challenge while changing the destiny requires a lot of luck or a heavy sacrifice.

He is clearly able to speak to animals but not quite as well as radagast.

I knew there’d be large meandering bits so I tried buying in and went “okay what is the point of this inconsequential moment”. I found these moments were frequently used to showcase a character trait of the big 3 (Biblo, Thorin, & Gandalf) or to establish the culture of the dwarves and the impact of this generational trauma that resulted from Smaug’s invasion. I liked seeing it with this perspective but I will never defend this series to anyone.
    The 3rd one specifically leaves me with a bad taste because I started working at a movie theater when it came out and I had to individually wash all of the IMAX 3D glasses during its opening weekend.

    For all their problems, I feel the Hobbit movies turned out really well considering the rushed shooting schedule and how everything was thrown together on the fly during filming. 'An Unexpected Journey' has a lot of great stuff, from the awe-inspiring prologue, the introduction of Radagast, the brief but chilling glimpse of Sauron, to the White Council meeting (which is just five minutes of people talking, but the acting chops there is incredible), the riddle game, and that final shot of Smaug. Though it takes a long time to get going, there's an obvious love for Tolkien and his universe throughout the film, and I still think it's a great reintroduction to Middle-Earth, and a good start to the trilogy as a whole.

The book was my favourite as a kid and them hitting most of the points of that whilst fleshing out the dwarves and making them feel so distinct and managing to make me care for them is incredible. Bilbo, Gollum and Gandalf are literally my top 3 favourite characters in all of fiction and they get them perfect. The music is amazing as always too and the dwarves singing is better than I imagined as well as the design of all the places like Goblin Town. Honestly when Bilbo is reminiscing about home and you see his character growth I get so emotional. The highs of this film get close-ish to Lord of the Rings for me (close-ish haha). Genuinely this film is an 8/10 for me. With each rewatch it keeps getting better and better. I used to like the second one more as a kid but nah definitely not anymore and think that’s like a 6.5/10 now. Wow way to pod fade for like a month boys. I remember this coming out when I worked at the theater, I was a projectionist and our head projectionist kept thinking he messed up the file when he was putting it on the drive for the projector. It did look bad.

    You should actually watch the extended version of the 3rd movie because its only extended because of a 5 minute rated R scene when the dwarves go on a slaughter-a-thon decapitating orks left and right and its the best part of the trilogy.

    IDC, I really loved the 1st and 2nd movie. I get so immersed in that world the slow pace doesn't bother me. The first movie builds the dynamic between the dwarves and Bilbo so well it holds the bad parts of this movie and the sequels together and the payoff in the end with Bilbo and Thorin is really good and sets up his downfall in the sequels.
    The Hobbit trilogy has a different approach to its storytelling and I think people compare certain aspects to the LOTR trilogy that I think it's unfair to compare to.
    It's a real shame how rushed these movies were because, with time, the whole trilogy could have been so much better.

    I have a weird relationship with this trilogy. I, like anyone with a pulse, loved the lotr trilogy, and after having read the books, they have become one of my favorites. Needless to say, I was ecstatic when I learned the hobbit was being adapted into a movie. Liked the first one, thought the second was okay, and never saw the third the thirds, only ever watching it when I rented it from a rebox at a McDonald’s. All of this to say, the rankin bass version is vastly superior

    I honestly don't remember anything from these 3 movies. When you recap the plot it's like I'm watching it for the first time. All I remember is that the CGI looks like Playstation 2 graphics.

    Taking it Easy was written by Jackson Browne who lived with (or below?) one of the Eagles members. He gave them that song, and that likely explains the difference in feel. Jackson Browne has written a lot of songs you'll have heard of but never knew it was him because he gave them to other artists.

    There's a fan edit that greatly improves this trilogy, by Maple-Films. Pairs it down to four hours with an intermission, which plays an unused (but great) piece of music by Howard Shore. They also professionally re-colour graded every scene, to give it more of that LOTR realistic tone. Getting rid of the horrible bloomy, oversaturated look. They even fixed some poor music choices, like when it plays the Nazgul theme from LOTR, when Thorin faces Azog. There's only a few small continuity issues, but they are very easy to overlook or miss entirely.

    Imo the hobbit films are over hated, I remember watching the first one and it made me want to read all the books for the first time. I think they're great, not as good as lotr but I still really enjoy them and watch them at least once a year alongside lotr. Recently they showed the lotr trilogy in theaters and I wish they would show the hobbit trilogy again.

    I can’t believe James and Maso went where no other reviewer has dared to go, by calling the LotR movies better than the Hobbit movies.

    I guess in retrospect, if there’s one thing that would motivate a hobbit to go out on an adventure, it’s an empty larder…
