I’ll give you a 4th reason if you have young sons! Years ago when I was homeschooling I had four sons and somebody gave us a young hand raised barred rock rooster and we named him Granite. He was kind and gentle and he always thought about his hens before he thought about himself. I would throw out scraps and he would call all the hens over showing them where the food was by pecking at it a few times and then he would stand back while they ate and he would just watch the sky and the surroundings to make sure that they were safe while they ate. I always used that rooster as an example to my sons and said see boys you can take care of your wives like that too, you always think about them first before you think about yourself and you’ll have a good marriage! My boys are now in their 30s and they actually remind me of those conversations and said how it meant so much to them in their married life to remember that rooster named Granite! 3 are happily married and the 4 th is getting married this March. (2022)

My rooster was amazing! We had him for 18 months before a fox broke into the garden and he sacrificed himself for his hens. Will forever be thankful for him.

When I toss out bread scraps etc., my rooster will run to them and call the hens to eat first. He's such a gentleman. 💙

Our rooster was raised as a hen until we discovered he wasn’t...LOL. So he was handled from the beginning. I’ve done several submission training sessions with him to make sure he knows I’m in charge. He doesn’t mean that he hasn’t tried to show me up. I ended up playing broom hockey with him twice because he got a little aggressive. For the most part he’s great to have around.

That was apparently before all the Californians “flocked” to southern Oregon. Nowadays if you have a rooster all the neighbors complain about the noise… even out in the county.

I love my rooster too for protection to my family. My rooster lets us know when cars pull in the driveway. Also alerted us at 2 in the morning when a man tried to break in our garage.

When I was a young kid, my mum brought home a single baby chick. He grew up to be a rooster, but we were inseparable. He followed me everywhere, I taught him tricks and he knew his name. He used to chase off my small dog outdoors when we let him roam. Eventually, being a suburban backyard, he started to crow and we had to let him go. My mum always told me he went to a farm, but I don’t know how true that is. I’ve missed him ever since. Love ya Bobby the Rooster. Just about to get a flock and set up my own backyard poultry this week :)
They are a lot of work. But it's worth it I think. I find solitude and peace by spending time with my new flock.

Had chickens growning up. I remember my dad always saying "nothing survives in the chicken yard". We fed them every type of kitchen scraps and plate scrapings including meat. All gone.
I also remember our rooster. I honestly could say that I never saw him eat. I'd throw grass and food in the yard and all he would do is cackle to the hens to get what he discovered. Not once did I see him take a bite.
I also remember him being quite submissive to the hens and if they got agressive towards him he just took it (they also refused to let him roost with them so he was under the nest boxes every night, even in the coldest New Hampshire winters). BUT, when it was time to be "amorous" the hens didn't have a say (when it was time, it was time whether they liked it or not). That was the line.

We lived in a subdivision where they allowed you to have a few birds but no roosters. We had 3 chickens for quite a while. We got a few roosters accidently (kids hatching eggs) raised them until they started crowing and then found a home/plate for them. Since we started with the three we decided to find a place (actually not to far down the road) where they allow chickens and livestock, along with roosters. Still a tad in the city, still in a subdivision but a bit more spread apart. We now have 13 chickens and 1 rooster and he keeps them well in check. It's doable even around the cities depending on where you live.

My mom had 2 hens and 1 rooster. All Rhode Island Reds. She lives in a typical suburban neighborhood. One day a fox jumped our privacy fence and proceeds to take "Joe" the rooster out. The girls Henny Penny and Chicken Little squawked loud enough to get my attention just in time to save Joe from the last bite of ripping his tail feathers out. One more bite, and he would have been a goner. Made me proud that Joe stood up for his girls. Flocks need roosters.

When I was a kid my "chore" was to feed and give water to my egg laying chickens and rooster and of course I got super attached to those buggers at that age. There was one time in particular we started getting a weasle invading the chicken koop through 2 different holes in the floor weathered away making his way through. There had been an attack in the chicken koop killing only one chicken. Which was enough to let my "zebra rooster" (cant remember the breed sorry) to block the hole with his face sacrificing himself till the next morning I went out to feed and open the chicken koop, he had been bleading out with his face a bloody mess and eventually died to the end trying save the chickens which he had done successfully. I'll always remember you Zebey 😔

Most city folk have no idea as to what a rooster will do to protect his girls. The best part is you don't have to train them to do that; like a dog barking at a noise at night, it's just what they do naturally.

About an hour ago a hawk went after Bumblefoot our smallest silkie rooster and I had two other roosters jump in and try and save him. Hawk flew off when I arrived but ive never been so proud of my roos!! Extra treats for everyone.

@@Buna2808 His feet or the hawk problem? No to both. He had messed up feet till a hawk carried him away. He was a bantam and so he never got big enough that the hawks left him alone. He had curled toes and as an adult bird its hard to correct without special boots and most of the time at his age it doesn't really work. He still got around and ran and it didn't cause him any issues so we never bothered with it.

I've felt it's always good to have a second rooster in a small flock. 1. It keeps them from getting lazy. 2. If you lose one, you still have a backup.
Chickens bring some peace and sanity to this crazy world, I enjoy them totally.
You know its Been a while sense I had a flock. Two divorces kelp me humpin or struggling. I just retired not exactly how I wanted it but I just purchased 4 acres and house. No mortgages. It's small house buts it's to my liking . Just got move in very next day I started my chicken coop pen. I'm kinda in hurry to get set up. At 62 you wanta be done with the hard part . I got fish and chicken's on the brain. It's to hot for me to fish at the present. Really it's to hot to be working out doors for me that's is I've spoiled myself the last two years not working a regular job. But I got this new homestead. I probably want get to deep in garden few tomatoes plants next year maybe some bell peppers if I can grow it out of bucket I'm good. My old knee's or wore out I still get around pretty good yes it pains me some. But I enjoy getting cup of coffee going out to chicken pen kick back watch the squirrels and the birds not to mention the chickens I haven't had any for sometime I'm not waisting time getting set up. I'm getting into it just for pure enjoyment. I went over to flea market guy's has some bb reds year old . I like bantams breeds I really like them all but thoes little bb rooster's hard to beat for good morning show cock of the walk you might say. I got the three in dog crate In the basement . Coop under construction hopefully I will be done with it by end of the weekend. Got my outdoor table and chairs set up for my morning routine. Yes the whole point takes away past troubles. But I tell you the move and all the labor I'm gonna threw is definitely exhausting. I'm in the country near the Tennessee river 3o miles round trip to town . Doing the electricity turn on mail change water changing banks got get tags change. Keep yard mowed hunting inexpensive furniture. Single old fart not planning on entertaining. Basic necessities. One of my needs is thoes chickens simply because they relax me . That little bb rooster is in the basement he definitely let it be known he's in the neighborhood. Being in the country ain't country if you cant hear a rooster crow.

My flock has several roosters, one day while I was pounding fence posts for the chicken run, I decided to see if I could crow like a rooster. It must have been a feeble attempt on my part, because every one of the hens and the roosters ran for their lives under the coop. It was hilarious.

Our rooster fought off a fox and survived. The day before, the fox killed one of our hens. The next day he was ready and did a great job, with a loss of feathers and some blood, but survived and healed well. Love that rooster.
I've been an avid chicken lady for 20 years,I love watching you because you are the first youtuber that is spot on,1 live out on an acre of land out in the country ,in a very, very small neighborhood, my chickens are free range and all the neighbors already know them,they are out and about from 6am to 5pm,cause at 5pm they will be waiting outside for their favorite goodies from mommy🤣🤣I live in Texas,where we seemed to have lost spring and fall,this winter over here was mild,and now I have 3 sets of babies,total 15 ,10 hens and 5 roosters. I have 25 chickens ,3 big roosters and 2 miniature roosters,and boy are the egg laying machines working on overtime🤣I'm a,67 yeat old mexican lady who loves to cook and bake from scratch ,so my girls and guys love my leftovers alot,were talking about homemade tortillas,srroz con pollo 😋I love my chickens and roosters, and they really do provide me with an ample amount of eggs daily🤗🤗🤗🤗
I've always loved how protective the roosters are.
My rooster fought a coy wolf. A hen was being attacked. The coy wolf grabbed the rooster and ran off with it in its mouth. I ran after it and shot at it. The coy wolf dropped the rooster. The miracle was the rooster survived and came running towards me. He was dancing for his hens less than an hour after the incident. He was soar for a week or so but is doing fine minus the feathers off his back side.

I had 2 hens and a rooster. I don't know what kind he was, he was smallish with beautiful green and red feathers. A hawk got into the pen and killed the hens but the rooster killed the hawk. He didn't have a scratch on him. What a beast.

I think I would absolutely love having hens and roosters. I live a chicago suburb, and one of my neighbors has a rooster. I watched him caring for a flock of finches one morning and it was the CUTEST thing EVER watching them follow him around. He hasn't tried to attack me at all but he does let you know you are on his space.
Roosters are fearless. The will sacrifice themselves to save their harem.
Sadly that's about all they can do is take the hit from a predator. They seem like fighters with other roosters but don't stand a chance against raccoons, foxes, hawks even a cat. Plus this fellow should put fencing over the top of fenced in area. Don't know why his chickens don't fly over that short fence.

@Nunya Bidness hi, i read your comment about flying and I've found it depends on the breed, for most part larger breed do not fly as much but the bantam types seem to be fairly good flyers and we have some that fly into the rafters of our barn to roost. About 12' up. Ducks and other lage species tend not to fly much either except some of the wildish like Guinea or Turkey or mallard ducks and geese. Have a nice day! And enjoy the birds!
When I was traveling through Costa Rica, saw a lot of locals, with huge roosters. Kept them as pets. Smart as a dog. These roosters were huge....
Rocky the Jamaican people who lived in Gutanamo, Cuba on base with us had wild chickens that they would feed and raise. Loved it! They ate all the bugs.

You nailed the reasons for having roosters. We've had chickens for several years and can't imagine living here without them. The crowing is part of the ambiance and we'd miss hearing them if they weren't here. Our guys are very protective - we have heritage breed, Dominique - and a rooster will wait outside the unit in the evening until the last hen straggles in. Quite amazing. Wonderful birds. Excellent video; very educational.

Our older hens that had stopped laying started laying again within days of getting a rooster.
I grew up with chickens in my yard- roosters and hens. We had roosters that fought off stray dogs, mongooses, mountain lions, and hawks. The roosters took turns sitting on the eggs too. The problem was, when it’s time to catch a chicken to eat, the roosters were still defending the flock against us. Almost took out my eyes with those sharp spurs.

My chickens increased egg production by a lot with the introduction of the rooster. Also if you don't have a rooster and you put in a new hen the others gang up on the new one and sometimes even kill her. The rooster as you said keeps the peace.

@@tbird2249 yes you get to eat the eggs, you just pick up your eggs daily. Its not a matter of fertilization with chickens but a matter of incubation and usually a chicken will lay for a whole week before going broody and incubating them. You shouldnt eat the eggs of a chicken that has been incubating them and that is why you pick them up daily
@@tbird2249 You can eat the eggs.... but chickens go through a " clucking " stage. They sit on the nest for long periods... and if all eggs are not picked up daily........and mixed in with other eggs you might sell.... There will be a nice bright " eye" with some blood in it looking back at you !

Years ago I had a spitzhauben rooster. Early morning at 3am I heard a bang on my backdoor. Scared the shit out of me, I thought someone was breaking into the house. Turned on the light and looked out the door window it was my spitzhauben rooster with a great horned owl. The owl was sitting on the porch rails while the rooster was on the porch deck. Apparently they had been fighting. I opened the door the owl flew away. I grab the rooster and put in back in the pen. To my surprise I all of the hens were alive and well. I can't remember how the owl got in the chicken pen but was happy my Roo did his job.
Now that is a badass rooster.

I had a Japanese Bantam rooster who sacrificed himself for three of his chicks. The one month-old chicks got out. I turned the rooster out with them, since I was unable to catch them. The next morning, the chicks were there, but only a few feathers from the rooster. He could have gone into the tree, but would have had to have left his babies behind. He didn't. I have not, and will never forget his sacrifice.
They are a very noble creature, when all is said and done. Never forget the T-Rex DNA lurking beneath those feathers. Here's to all of our magnificent , fearless roos who saved their flocks. ❤

Wow this is SAD! My chickens all went indoors on concrete! The predators here are bad! I bought a huge rooster and found him decapitated when they were free-ranging.

@@rogerd4559 I get you have to do all you can to protect your birds. But set a live trap to relocate the raccoon, no need for both chickens and raccoon to get killed just for the raccoon trying to feed itself. Live traps exist for a reason.
I have a Dominique rooster that I was "gifted" and the girls love him and he really is invaluable for spotting and alerting to hawks. Also, the chicks they hatch every spring are so adorable!
I always hated the early morning crowing and crowing! I used to butcher all the roosters first! My brother in-law used to have a nasty one that would come up behind you and attack! But after hearing this I realize how important it is to have roosters! Thank you so much!

This was really helpful! I’m just learning about chickens now in hopes to keep them someday. My impression so far is that a lot of people don’t like roosters. So it was nice to hear someone presenting some positive information about them.
I can't keep them myself but the farm where I buy my feed has a small cafe and the roosters wander about the outside tables. They like eating bits of ice lolly from my hand and they are so very gorgeous when the sun hits their colours.

@@kmbytt984 all chickens r smart. They can recognize up to 100 faces and 200 words. I also learned to mimic chicken sounds and they love it. Mine are all named and know their names. If I leave for a few hours, when I drive up, they run to great me. 25 hens, 1 roo. Love them!
We got our last 4 chickens that were all different breeds & supposed to be ALL HENS. Long story short one of them turned out to be a rooster & yes we do live in city limits. Never one complaint on him & he's been crowing for several months now. We love him!!! Our neighbors love hearing him as well so win win for us. Raising chickens mainly for egg eating however we are just newly trying incubating them. The first go around failed but we are determined in 20 more days to have a few baby chicks hatched. Then more after that. I find it keeps my depression & anxiety at bay. My rooster has spent the night & comes in every now & then to visit us. He will sometimes come to our back door & either crow & tap on it as if to say you haven't paid any attention to me today. Lol. Love your video. I subscribed & agree that owning a rooster is very beneficial. I wasn't worried about having him but for neighbors complaining. Not happening. He is a delight & a funny character. His name is Godzilla.
Happy for you and your flock! I too have (seven) roosters on a farm and they are all hand raised and come visit and in the house for snacks. People think roosters will fight but not if they are raised together.

Also you should string stainless wire back and forth across the range yard fence top a foot apart as this stops birds of prey from snatching up your chickens. Which I have done and always have roosters too.
Hi , i was watching a big road island Red rooster of mine in tbe evening perched on a fence falling asleep. To my horror i saw a great horn Owl swooping down to pick him off the fence!.... suddenly at the last second ! Poof and feathers flying !!! The rooster kicked the Owl and it's flight was diverted as it landed in a near by tree .... lol the Owl ,me, and the rooster all where supprized ! The rooster i thought had it's eyes closed so how it knew at the last second to jump up and kick the owl i have no idea but it sure was a sight to see ,would of made a great video if i would of caught it on camera.
Roosters also find good patches of food and, rather than eating it themselves, they call the flock over and then point at it to show them what to eat. Recently, I got a few "broody" breeds. Turns out that the roosters actively take part in rearing the chicks! I love having roosters, and while I usually try to keep only one or two per flock (I expanded this year to 6 flocks from one), I have as many as 3 in some groups. Luckily, most of my neighbours love them - very few find them annoying (only the city transplants find them bothersome.)

I have caught roosters actually giving the hens a break and setting on the eggs to keep them warm while the ladies fed and releaved themselves

New sub btw, We always keep roosters with our flock for the very same reasons you described here. They are easy to tame and provide early warning to threats as well as flock discipline and protection. I had a rode island red rooster that took a real beating from a red tail hawk but allowed the hen it attacked to get free and run. I barley saved the rooster but he made plenty of noise during the struggle. He was my buddy after that encounter, i think he understood that I saved his life because he hung out with me everytime I was out there after that. Take care and God bless you and yours!
I used to had a beautiful mini rooster named roosternator, anyway I believe he warned the whole flock about a hawk nearby. It was crazy because they all started to run like hell before the hawk got closed, only one got injured but was still made it through. When we went outside to see what was the commotion, their were no chicken out. It like they all vanished, we eventually found all of the chicken. I've had super gentle roosters who only made chicks and never attacked anything (even out ran hens for cover) and I've had aggressive ones who have taken on dogs through the fence or in the open while hens ran. I only keep aggressive ones, even if I get grabbed here and there. We live in the woods in middle of no where, the flock needs a feathered knight not a softie.
My rooster died protecting my hens from a hawk.
Aww That’s so sad My whole flock died and then we got more then a Hen died and another one died then another died. 😭😢😭😢😭😢
My rooster ran the furthest during a hawk attack and let a hen get killed. And he also ripped the scalp off a 4 week old chick trying to screw her. Needless to say, we no longer have a rooster
@@kphoenix137 Try a guard goose, they are way more aggressive to predators and stronger over all.
They are also a little bit less noisy than a rooster.
I had a wonderful rooster once. He was an amazing yard manager, protector and serviced the girls without injuries. All my roos since have been compared to him. So far no one has lived up to him. He died protecting his girls. RIP

I have chicken for the first time. I lost 5 to a possum, but still had 10 chickens. One turned out to be a rooster. I put 23 eggs in the incubator and hatched out 9. I didn’t do anything right, and was so excited to get 9 more chickens. Can’t wait to see how many are hens. I have 2 roosters so any of the 9 are roosters will be put in the freezer

Growing up we always had roosters, it was so cool learning about how they grow from laying eggs to watching them hatch out, then to watch them grow and finally to end up either adding to the flock or adding to the freezer. Hope you have a fantastic day.

My grandfather insisted on a minimum of 4 roosters to protect the hens. 2 to take on predator, 2 for hen defense. He raised buff orpington and the roosters were at minimum 10 lbs so a couple could take on a dog and send it running. Their spurs were very painful.
That was some good information. I have a cockerel that I got accidently with baby chicks and I have been unsure about keeping him. He is only about 18-20 weeks right now but have seen him do some of the things you talked about. Thanks for the information. I love to hear him crow. as well.
Roosters are great to have around and to protect the girls; however, sometimes roosters are aggressive, depending on the breed I suppose. We had a Leghorn rooster that was super aggressive. Step into the yard and he would attack from 100 yards away. If you didn't have your boots on he could draw blood with his leg horns. That gets old after a while. There's an easy fix--throw him in the pot and get another rooster.
Just watched a video on how to deal with an aggressive rooster. It involved wearing gloves and holding it down and petting it. Holding it down mimicked a dominate rooster holding down a rival rooster. You should check the video out.

Rooster can become aggressive if one provokes it. After several provocations, he becomes aggressive all the time.
i was going to say we had a leghorn that got so bad at attacks he once took on a 50 ford..spurs were bout 1.5 inches long
My brother has a rooster that sometimes goes after him and his wife, especially the wife. She beat him with a stick and we were sure she killed him. But next morning he was crowing. I can hand feed him and have never been attacked. I have never been afraid of him. Why that is, is a mystery to me.
It's in the breed. I am yet to see a Leghorn rooster that doesn't attack humans and I've seen a lot.
Thanks - didn't know my rooster was why my hens lay year round one thing I do know is that I wouldn't have any hens were it not for my handsome swashbuckler rooster. He not only protects them but he's a real gentleman, finding and passing food for the girls and they just love him.
try turning over an old plank on the ground for them, call them over to gobble up all the crickets under it, a real treat for them

I had a rooster named oreo, I raised him up from when he was just a chick and he loved me. Every time I came around he would run to me and then do a dance around me. He was so sweet....to me...he however, was very aggressive to everyone else in my family so unfortunately we had to put him down. I'm grateful I wasn't there because of hoe much I loved him. He was a pet to me and I miss him everyday ❤

I think this was a great video. I picked up 7 “hens” (as I was told) as chicks this year. Strictly for backyard pets to keep on our ten acres. It turns out I have 5 roosters and 2 hens. I love the roosters. Sure, they crow and get a little rowdy from time to time but they are all distinct characters and provide hours of entertainment. Many people said that I wouldn’t be able to keep them together. Not true. As adults, they are like rowdy adolescents sometimes and “chest bump” each other - but that’s it. They’re all buddies. And they love the hands that feed them. They follow us. Sure, we handled them a lot. And yes we spent a ton of time with them. The only issue we had was when they established chain of command among themselves. There was quite a bit of short lived disagreements. But nothing that got out of hand or bloody. They’re awesome. I agree. Would I recommend this for a brand new chicken owner (5 roosters)? Probably not. But one in the mix for sure. Granted, I’ve come across some man fighters in my day- but like you say- it’s a small bird. People need to stop being such chickens about roosters. (Pun intended). Great video. I have three boys and many people warned me there would be issues, especially when the third, Scruff, was showing rooster signs... However I feel there is a difference between introducing 3 roosters all together at once, and having three roosters all grow up together as a family unit. It has been a year now and they are all still getting along and the hens are just as happy and especially safe, no bird of prey (... Or pigeon) can sneak up on them and the nesting wildbirds are also being kept safe as no cats want to get chased by angry balls of fluff.
That’s terrific. Sometimes I think I’m just lucky for now and I find myself waiting for the other shoe to drop. I’ve had more brutal fighting with my five week old turkey poults - the worst go around yet just today. I can only assume two toms that battled it out. But they’re too young to tell yet. It was so bad that I had to step in. Ive never had to get in the middle of my roosters. I’m so glad someone else is fortunate like me with roosters. If I must, I’ll get rid of my hens first before thinning my rooster flock. Roosters are the best. I hope I don’t have to choose between any. I think you’re right- when they’re raised as one unit, your odds of a peaceful flock existence increases dramatically. My five actually work together to banish threats (dig, cat, etc). The three or four will confront head on while one or two s Sam around from Behind. Not much stands a chance with my five renegades. Yet, they love each other for the most part. And is too. Granted, when a strangers in the yard - they beat the German Shepard to the car door usually. And people tend to be more timid of poultry than dogs it seems. I find this extremely comical sometimes. Provided no one ever hurts them. They just greet strangers and seem to ask what they want. I’m always wondering the same thing anyway. 😂
A rooster can seriously hurt a small child, so people with kids are not being chicken. They're being responsible. Also there are roosters who will overmate with the hens and injure or kill them.
if you handle the roosters alot they will be willing to learn simple tricks, fly up on your shoulder etc
If you have a insect problem, mosquitos, crickets, ants, spiders, they will clean up your property
They find food for the hens also.

I have 2 roosters in my flock, we had a hawk come in a hit one of the hens and both roosters attacked the hawk. Needless to say I didn't lose a hen.
The only time my rooster comes after me is when I’m trying to doctor a hen. I’ve learned to lock him up first and then handle the hens.
My parents took us to grandparents home when I was about six years old. I went outside to play and a rooster jumped me and clawed me. My grandmother saw it happen, and we has rooster for supper.
I get such a kick out of this talk about Roosters bringing calm from chaos. When I was a little girl I noticed the same effect every evening when my dad came home. Ahhh the good old days.
This is the best video I’ve seen on the subject. Protection from predators, greater egg production, fertilized eggs for breeding, greater meat production, and keeping the peace between the hens. I didn’t know roosters keep the peace like that, but it makes sense. (I didn’t grow up on a farm, and we’ve never kept chickens.) All great reasons to keep roosters, even if it happens that the noise is a factor. I like the sound. And I really enjoyed a look into your farm, and I thank you. We had a chicken farm when I was a little girl in South Africa. Then I was sent to a convent boarding school and my dad sold the farm. You've taught me something and brought back happy memories.

My rooster protected my girls many times, once from an eagle attack, where he got beat up pretty bad and we lost only one hen out of 15. His last protection act he lost his life, but the girls were ok, he was 9 years old and did a fantastic job. We did have to have a few discussions about whose hens they really were and came to an understanding. We have a new rooster with out new hens and he is doing a great job and has already fathered two chicks. I will always have a rooster especially living at the edge of the wilderness.

If you treat your rooster affectionately they will love to sit in your lap and allow you to hold them upside down. Even a mistreated rooster can learn to be a very loving companion. They are brave, sacrificial and stoic.

I had a rooster named "Chauncey" that used to watch sesimy street while laying on his back in my lap. I sometimes would wake to him gooming my eyebrows and facial hair

We had nine chickens one time in town. One of our chickens a bantam silky went broody and just sat on a nest forever it seemed. We felt sorry for it so we went and got two little chicks at the store brought them home and put them under her wings and she took them right in and raised them and guarded them from the other chickens it was something to see. Like I said the best part was we didn’t have to raise the little chicks, no heat lamps, no feeding them, the silky took care of all of that.
the best reason to have a roster is to drive neighbors nuts.

Many years ago my neighbor’s little banty rooster would come over every morning to meet a hen of mine and they’d spend the day together. It was so cute.
I have two in my barred rock/beldenfielder flock. Brothers grew up together. Although they dont fight,the bigger brother often doesnt let the other eat. I have to feed him separately. They do a good job of protecting the hens. The bigger one isnt mean but definitely more fiesty. The other is the sweetest bird, he comes up for cuddles and doesnt mind be carried around. His one hen who hangs out with him is also super sweet. The dynamics of the flock and the different personalities are facinating. Nice flocks by the way👍
I remember that when I was little, we bought barred rocks from Orchleins or the MFA and after introducing the birds to our other flock they seemsd like regular hens. But every morning we would hear crowing so we found out we had a rooster. At the time, we only raised them for eggs so we sold the rooster to a friend.

I ended up with 2 roosters that were supposed to be hens. I bought some no-crow collars on Amazon for a few dollars. They will still crow if someone comes near their run, who they don't recognize, but it is a soft crow, quieter than the hens after they lay an egg.
It's hilarious when you first put the collars on them. They run backwards trying to get out of it, and dance around for a little while. After that it doesn't bother them. I live in town, so it's either the collar or being rehomed.

Sunday roast
We live in suburbia with a total of seven units on either side of us. Having eight silkies our roo has his feathers full , but we were concerned with all the neighbours about that with his crowing early in the morn we'd get complaints. A collar didn't work, so I built a sin bin out of 12 hay bails with a large internal cavity and black plastic as a water proof floor . I've also covered the lot in black plastic to keep the sin bin waterproof. One of the bails serves as a door, so when Duke ( he walks like John Wayne) crows in the morning he gets put into the sin bin, works great like a sound proof room. Comes a more respectable time of the day like 8am he's out and back with his girls. No complaints so far from the neighborhood.
Great info! I just watched a video of a rooster protecting a chicken from a hawk. As soon as the hawk attacked the hen, the rooster rant out of its shelter and attacked the hawk and really started beating it up before the hawk escaped. Also, on a funny note, when I was watching a video of lava from an erupting volcano (night shots), you could hear a rooster crowing over and over in the background. The person doing the video said the rooster crows constantly because it thinks the bright lava is the rising sun.
I'm 75.....we had only hens.
But we borrowed Jack, the leghorn from down the street once a year.....🤭...
