    Yup, this is what I needed to see. I've been working on the "slow at the top, speed at the bottom" feeling for a while and it has changed my game tremendously. Obviously, I still need to work on it but I'm glad to know that I'm on the right path. Appreciate your simple explanations and demonstrations!

    I have been working on releasing lag properly for years, and I've watched a ton of tutorials, but slowing down the start of the back swing seems to be a huge missing component. I've never felt this snap at impact or seen angles like I have when doing these drills in just a single night. Thanks for the years of great videos.

    Clay, I been swinging with the lag you have been showing with good results. I video taped my swing and my left hand would be in front of my right leg with club shaft horizontal. Making solid impact and straight shots but not getting the distance I think I should. Actually having to one club up for my shots. Have you got any pointers that would help me?

    Clay there's a fantastic example for why early-releasing results in "muscling" -- take a look at figure skating, where the dancers would tuck their arms in for the spin, then spread their arms back out for the stop. Maybe giving those examples can help students understand the matter even better.

    Okay now finally someone has found a way to explain this in a manner I can progress to. I have tried to force lag by trying to feel my wrist remain set in the downswing instead of just slowing down the momentum as you explained and letting natural forces get me there. Great video!

      I found out, that you want to have as little lag as possible when you start the downswing.
      I don't hinge the club at all with the wrist, keeping the head as far away from the ball as possible when I start the downswing.
      With soft grip, the lag is building up, while you swing through. Most pro golfers on tour now play like this. Shorter backswing, or no wrist hinge, or even both.
      7:15 Watch how he suddenly has no wrist hinge when he swings the club...

    Playing tennis you almost never cast the tennis racket. The racket lags behind because of the bent trail wrist and you are leading the handle of the racket forward before hitting the tennis ball. The motion is similar to the downswing in golf.

    • @mikerodrick2430
      @mikerodrick2430 Před rokem +2

      I can tell you I have one & it works well for me. You can't hurry anything or the clubface will never be in the proper position. When you 1st start using it, your shots will likely go to the right if you're right handed obviously because the face is open. When you can hit the ball straight, you have it right. The only thing is that you don't want to be making full speed swings with it because it's heavier & you could injure yourself. It's not meant for distance, only proper swings. When you go back to a regular club while you're hitting balls, it'll feel much lighter & you might find you may be hitting hooks or pulls. I'm not a teaching pro but I'd definitely recommend it.

    while I agree with most of this I think you should have stressed the amount of time it takes for someone who "casts" the club to change that move and learn to lag the club . Chances are they need to fix the path( shallow , which you talked about ) AND learn to lag. That can take weeks to months for someone to change.

      @@leechaney3703 Did you watch the video?? You obviously DID not. To hold the club like Shawn does, which promotes proper lag, you have to securely GRIP the club! On the scale of 1 to 10, I would recommend a 7-8. Again, try swinging a bat or an axe, or a hockey stick, or a tennis racket with a loose grip!! In all those physical acts, you HAVE to have a secure grip, NOT a loose one! A loose grip promotes a flip at the ball, which causes you to lose you angle and therefore your lag!! I say again, try and maintain proper lag through the contact area with a loose grip!! You CANNOT!!
