I love how this story not only shows her love for her children but her strength in how she endured her trials as a single mother. The fact that she did not give up speaks nor allowed her family to become a product of their environment speaks volumes of her character. As a single mother I love everything about this story.
My favorite scene, is when she confronts a gang trying to recruit her son at the front door of her house. With her shot gun in hand,She calmly says the only gang here is the Thomas Gang.
My favorite scene is the one where Isiah's big brother confronts him on the rooftop and tells him that there's more to life than basketball. He tells his baby brother not to make the same mistake that he did by pinning all of his hopes in life on hoop dreams, but to go to school and seek things that are better and have more longevity. "Every dream I had, I now pass on to you," Isiah realizes this and wisely decides not to quit school and try again.

This was a powerful and emotional story. I think she is a very courageous woman and Mother that fought to keep her children OUT of the projects. That is truly commendable. The one thing I disagree with and think she should have done better is that she should have supported Michael in HIS dream of playing basketball. She was told by several faculty members how TALENTED MICHAEL WAS IN THAT SPORT, ect. He wasn't great academically and that's ALL she looked at. NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE ABOUT SCHOOL. Micael lost all his self-esteem and ended up wandering the streets fulfilling nothing in his lif;e. She should have supported him in HIS dream and HIS achievements but maintained those standards for the other children because they thrived in education. Michael too could have and probably would have been successful in HIS OWN WAY, had his Mother supported him in that. It broke my heart to see him wandering aimlessly, feeling no-self worth and even when she saw him from the bus, she still didn.t reach out to him.
Michael didn't have the will power to go thru college basketball and further. All Michael wanted was to fly, didn't want to comply- and work hard. He inherited his mother's stubbornness. There can be many forms of stubbornness: righteous or selfishness; even pridefulness. Mrs. Thomas truly earned a crown for her righteous Motherhood. Loved the acting in this story, everyone was amazing. Alfie Woodard, DEAR, you are my favorite Actress! XO
A woman born in the projects has no fault. Did someone stick you in there and forget you? This woman lives among the men who took her people captive. Basketball is not better then accepting God given roles, loving your family and admitting that there is such a thing as enemies, and that enslavers don't become country host of any kind.
