Normal game mode is already roguelike. Wild mods are just additional mods that you can pick that tweak the experience. But it plays the same.
Anyway, you're doing pretty good for a first try. One pointer, learn to recognize experience shinies that litter the screen (hard against the starry background sometimes) as experience means more mods and more ooomph :)

I always feel shocked by how people like gamepad way more in this game than mouse and keyboard, I've always struggled a lot with gamepad and found mouse and keyboard my go to (which is most of the times only mouse, cause you only need keyboard for a few extra stuff). I feel like you have waaaaay more control over where you go and where you shoot with it but hey, preferences! haha.
