    Thanks for turning me onto this product. When I heard you say "100 year warranty" I thought, "yeah, and it's void as soon as you sell your house and probably depreciates to nothing after 10 years." So I checked them out and was pleasantly surprised to see that the warranty is both transferrable and non-prorated. Those clauses are how most building material manufacturers can offer really long warranties that are, in reality, practically useless.
    I think your perspective of what makes the "best" roof might be a product of your arid climate, though. There are many heating climates where homeowners would much prefer a thermal mass over a radiant barrier on their roof.

      I have thought about the best place to put a radiant barrier, under the sheeting or on top. I really does depend on location, but then we need some good scientific research to investigate the optimal best for different regions. Sometimes I think builders are ahead of what science might say. They just follow their gut or what has worked over time.

      @@HowToBuildYourOwnHome the reinke shingles don't interlock, they just sit inside of each other on the corrugated valleys of the shingle and are nailed down with special ring shank nails. They are 20 gauge thick and reinke claims a large truck can ride over them without bending. They say no special install technique is needed and claim they are about as easy to install as asphalt shingle. Remove nails and slide out damaged shingle and slide new one under then renail if needed. They say it is ok to use nail gun on their latest shingles. Only $275 a square + shipping for the bare aluminum shingles. The shingle can wrap over edge of roof instead of drip edge. Reinke allows installation and have tested water intrusion on a 2/12 pitch. Seem like a decent product but have not seen it in person.

    • @HowToBuildYourOwnHome

      Joshua, it depends on labor costs in your area. If you install yourself, you can save and the final cost would be about the same as having asphalt installed. The material costs for aluminum can range from 165-210, depending what shipping and other factors. See howtobuildyourownhome.com for info on becoming an owner builder. Shouldn't the term REFLECT be used, instead of REFRACT, when talking about heat bouncing off aluminum roofing? Refraction is bending, like when a ray of light is bent going from one media to another, like going THROUGH the surface of a pond. Reflection is when something actually bounces OFF a surface.

    • @HowToBuildYourOwnHome
      @HowToBuildYourOwnHome  Před 3 lety +2

      Reflection is light bouncing off a mirror or glass, refraction is an infrared spectrum, the unseen light redirected, which is seen as the change in direction of light energy passing from one medium to another, or radiant energy bending. Aluminum has this radiant barrier quality to it. Yes, the terms sound the same but when we explain the physics it kind of helps.

  • @TrogdorBurnin8or
    @TrogdorBurnin8or Před rokem +1

    I really appreciate the video, but I have to say that the ideas about "refractive properties" are kind of gibberish. The science of radiant barriers in general in the industry is *mostly* confabulation. It would be nice to hear more about zinc vs aluminum vs copper vs coated steel vs lead shingles.

    • @HowToBuildYourOwnHome
      @HowToBuildYourOwnHome  Před rokem +1

      Simple observation is key. Touch an aluminum can in the hot desert sun and then touch an iron skillet also sitting in the same desert sun. The iron retains heat much more than aluminum. The industry is well aware of aluminum's refractive quality. It's not confabulation. It is based on the physics of light. Aluminum refracts light, which means it bounces light back in the direction it came and keeps heat in during the winter and heat out in the summer.
