  • Hey, I told you I didn't have much time for this weeks video. Your fault for getting your hopes up really. I guess you could spin this as nostalgic. It's not something I'm proud of, but I'm willing to defend my opinions. Vexillology must answer for it's crimes against descriptivism.

    i do think it's still important for flags to be recognizable at a distance, as they are kinda sorta flown on flagpoles that are very tall and usually seen at a distance.
    Imagine the flags outside the UN but with american states, it'd just be a bunch of indistinguishable blue rectangles and a handfull that you actually know which state it is, hilarious.
    I think the problem stems from the fact that we've started using flag designs (and actual flags) for completely different things, we use them as banners and patches and whatnot, where the design criteria are very different. It'd be great if we could simply have different designs for different use-cases and stop calling everything a flag.
    Like with the seals on bedsheets, how about instead of using the seals for everything including the flag, or throwing the seal into the trash bin and designing a new flag to use for everything, you use the seal for patches and other things where the details are easily visible and make a new flag that is only used on flagpoles and maybe as a banner? Surely that's the best of both worlds?

    • @ZephLodwick
      @ZephLodwick Před 18 dny +4

      Furthermore, a striking, unique design generally inspires more pride than a seal-on-bedsheet flag. Also, being easily reproducible helps a flag become iconic. Of US state flags, only California and Texas have become truly iconic, maybe Alaska, too. Chicago is quite proud of it's city flag, because it has a simple, striking, and unique design.

      @@I_Love_Learning Oh yeah, forgot about that. I think the video's criticism of Minnesota's state flag is overblown. Minnesota's nickname is 'Land of Lakes,' as they have over 1000, so having water represented on your flag is logical. Furthermore, the reverse pennant makes the shape of the state. As for the north star, Minnesota is the northmost contiguous state, so it makes sense they have it there.
      This may or may not've been deliberate, but it also resembles the flag of Puntland on the Horn of Africa, as there are many Somalian immigrants in Minnesota.
      When looking at the flag from a distance as it flutters in the wind, I'd be able to figure out it was Minnesota if I knew the design. This is the main reason why words aren't a good idea on flags. You can't read them if the flag is limp or flapping in the wind.

    Minnesota's new flag could be made infinitely better by removing the light blue and just having a non-rectangular Minnesota-shaped flag

  • @Erikatharsis
    @Erikatharsis Před 19 dny +8

    I was the designer of submission F58 in the Minnesota flag design contest, and honestly I'm still kinda salty about the flag the state went for. Like, I can respect how the new flag represents the state's shape, that is pretty clever and unique, but everything else about it is just bland as Hell, and honestly if my choice was between that flag and a seal on a bedsheet, I would probably choose the seal.
    But yeah, I broadly agree with you. There are lots of different official standards/regulations for flag design in different countries, and lots of different cultures for flag design and usage, and these should be studied and respected, instead of trying to force everyone into a sort of one-size-fits-all solution of three-color ultra-minimalism. That said, I'm not sure I'd agree with you that the sole purpose of a flag is to evoke a feeling of pride - all I'd really say is that the purpose of a flag depends on different factors, including how it's used and what impact it's supposed to have on whom.
    There's a lot I can say about this with regard to things like Norwegian municipal flags in particular, but it is nearly 5 AM somehow.

      One of these days we'll have a contest to redesign New York State's flag because it's just unappealing to look at. And in that contest, I do so solemnly swear that I will not make any of these "shapes on top of other shapes" flags.

    As with most things, prescriptivism has its upsides, too, mainly for official communication (some people still interpret it as equaling to any written communication, though), where precise meanings and thus spellings, constructions etc matter. And it is more justifyable in some places and tounges than in others. In English? Not very much, as it is a mess anyhow as it currently stands, also forcing some unintuitive and actually non-native stuff onto its speakers, kinda same with French. But there are languages with way more consistency and for those, prescriptivism can help to codify this for the sakes mentioned above.

    Ultimately, there are two parts of how your brai works. The side that wants to make rational system based thoughts. And what your brain prosses ad good.
    Often, people believe these are the same thing (and they typically are). What you would describe as good and what you feel is good are two distinct things. Let your mind be open so you can see if a rule you hold is something you don't believe in.

    The issue with the "Different Dialects of the Same Language" example is that Cantonese speakers would say ngo5 gaa3 hei3 zin2 syun4 sak1 mun5 saai3 sin2.
    And the fact that it's Mandarin speakers claiming we're both speaking the same language when Cantonese speakers are probably the one who'd disagree with that claim the most.
    I'd also disagree with the entire premise based on the fact that I'm not doing linguistics literall all of the time. Sometimes you just want to be mad at kids these days merging velar codas into dental ones.
