I love how the R10 is the under dog that keeps you smiling : )
I Have the R10 set up with awesome for myself and my children super simple to set up to the projector. I will in time buy a camera based unit, in time..
It does very well that’s for sure
Yesterday: "Why I ditched the Garmin R10"
Next day: Uploads a Garmin R10 video
😂 Loving the videos, dude
Glad you like them 😁👍🏼
I don’t have room to use my R10 inside but I use it often at my club. If you take the time to set it up properly the R10 works almost flawlessly with a miss read once in a while, hey but this happens even on a Trackman or GC Quad. It is a great unit for the price. I use it mainly for checking my club path and face to path which it picks up very well.
Yes great comment and it does happen with trackman and quad. Radar units are best outdoors whereas camera units are best indoors 😁
Really great video! I completely agree with your findings, great tool for the price point, easy to use. However, I personally I think that the effect of the lack luster spin axis numbers get's played down a lot. The result of having side spin off by even a couple degrees is MASSIVE in terms of where the ball is landing. Great device for the kids, if you are getting into golf, speed training, not the best if you are wanting to get a decent sim experience or are looking to fine tune your game.
Yes as soon as you want to get a bit more serious with the game and start shaping shots the accuracy for that is better found in other units I believe 😁
Great video as always. I've found the Garmin R10 incredibly accurate on full shots (minus spin axis). Where it falls short of expensive launch monitors is on chipping (can't read low shots) and putting (can't measure at all, although you can work around that with a webcam and GSPro).
I've had my R10 for nearly two years now, and love it. I can't justify spending 5x more for relatively small improvements.
It is a great unit and completely agree with what you’ve said here
I’ve had the R10 for a couple of years, and loved it! I moved up to the mlm2pro for the accurate spin axis and it has been a game changer! I,ve compared my driver numbers vs gc4 and they are amazingly close. In fact, as I do not spin the ball that much, the gc4 over estimates the carry numbers…
Hello David, I recently purchased the Garmin R10 and have been testing it indoor against a full swing simulator. I used regular balls (using RCT or balls with aluminium sticker will be my next tests). Interestingly enough, for the pitching wedge, the R10 gave me longer total distance (might be the spin miscalculation). After that, 9 iron up to 5 iron looked reasonable. I think that the R10 underestimated the distance with the 4 iron and the distance was definitly much too short with a 3 iron. I also tested the driver and I noticed that if my launch angle was a little low, the R10 seemed to struggle to get the distance right. The ball direction looked pretty good overall, I must say. Final conclusion, the higher the ball flight, it seems, the better the R10 performs.
As long as it’s setup in a stand level with the mat the numbers should be pretty accurate with most if not all clubs. You would need at least 10 feet of ball flight though
Nice test. I would agree that draw on R10 is sooo hard to hit. I can do it but i have to be 4+ degrees inside or more, and its still a 50/50 chance.
What ppl need to understand, its a $599 US unit, its not a GCQuad. Its not gonna be perfect, but its gonna be pretty darn close.
I would completely agree with your assessment, its a 7 outta 10. Hard to beat for the money and it will help you improve.
Spot on mate, it’s not a quad but it does fantastically well
Great video Dave. Where you are getting the differences in shot shape with the driver it would be interesting to see where on the clubface you struck or (no offense) miss truck it. I wonder if the theory that some have that gear effect can't be detected by the Garmin is the difference where you get an extreme miss match in shot shape with Driver. To be fair to the Garmin, when the shot shape wasn't correct with the iron at the end there it wasn't miles out. for most 10 handicaps upwards you'd be there or there abouts of the green even with the miss reads. If you are any better than that they the chances are you care enough about being an elite level sportsperson so would therefore be willing to invest in more expensive kit and tech so no real need to hate on the Garmin here. A great device at a great price that gives nearly every golfer 95% of what they could ever need from a launch monitor.
Yes great comment and I agree. It still did very well 😁
Great video! Kinda a bunmer the garmin struggles a bit with draws. Def think the rapsodo is the better buy. Hope Garmin has something in the works... kinda dont think there will be one this year since the PGA show just happened =/
Normally I can hit draws on it. Not sure what was happening on this day but it is possible I promise lol 😂
I did this same test with garmin and GC hawk at my local simulator on Sunday. Under 160yds it was accurate enough. Once we tried hitting above 160 it became less accurate. For the price, I'm happy being able to dial in approach shots in my garage.
Value for money a fantastic unit :)
@davidmaxfieldgolf It truly is. I've been contemplating selling it for the MLM2pro just for the camera. Haven't tried the Pro yet. What's your thoughts?
@@dansimon8515 mlm2pro is better and offers a lot more. Impact vision, swing vision, 240fps, R Cloud etc
@@davidmaxfieldgolf
Does it show swing path numbers on their app or any others? Ty
@@christopherd7922 not swing path as it’s measuring spin axis and you have impact vision which gives you a replay of your actual swing path and impact which to be honest is much better
I always kind of thought that the Garmin read the club path slightly after ball impact instead of just before which is why it always has trouble with hitting draws since your club after impact starts to come back around instead of being as in to out as it is at impact. The Garmin uses your club path and launch angle to estimate side spin. I still think if you're going to hit a green in real life you'll still hit the green with the Garmin for the most part just maybe a bit different part of the green
Yes I agree with that. It’s using an algorithm for the shit shape based on your club path as it can’t really see the club face
Great vid :) so weird that the draw doesnt pick up properly
It normally does but not sure what happened on this day
When i use GSPro i can hit beautiful draw shots very easy with Garmin.
Yeah you can definitely do it 😁
side spin is estimated so its never going to read shot shape properly, those that think it can do it accurately are mistaken.
Yes that’s true. The measured spin is only a totalled measured spin not the spin axis
@davidmaxfieldgolf still a great unit just has this limitation people should know. love the videos brother
@@longy277 yes 100% agree
I noticed you’re using the Garmin app and not awesome golf for this test. Is there a reason (better accuracy with Garmin app, etc?). Been using the r10 in my basement for about a year and a half mostly with awesome golf. Still don’t believe any of the numbers, including distance but am still trying to tweak it. Thanks for the video.
I was using awesome golf ⛳️
Would be great to see what it does with a standard non RCT ball and what the improvement is in investing in a sleeve of RCTs
I’ve done a comparison video between the 2 👍🏼
@@davidmaxfieldgolf didn’t know if with recent updates it has closed the gap
Do we not have to do manual firmware updates anymore? Also I think I need to adjust my weather and altitude settings because i know on avg my 7 iron is 130 all the time but after a winter slumber awesome golf was like you are 80 yards lol
The updates can be done through the app and there was a major one done recently. Might be worth checking out
Using the skytrak for a while now and saw that there are 3 keys figures as to what the should be measured - and that my unit was not measuring - angle of attack, face to path and swing path. The R10 measures these so for improving my game, will the R10 be better than the skytrak? Thanks!
The skytrak+ now measures all of those and unfortunately what the r10 doesn’t measure is spin axis so whilst it may give you face to path etc, if it’s not measuring the correct spin axis then it’s a bit of a mute point. Camera based units for shot shaping will mostly always be superior
What altitude settings do you use on the R10?
0 elevation
You mention that you thought the opposite side spin when using driver was because the R10 did not have enough time to measure well with your high ball speeds. I don't think this is accurate information. The R10 does not directly measure side spin from the ball rotation. Instead it uses club face and path data to determine side spin. Therefore it should give the same side spin numbers whether you have 20 feet of ball flight or one foot. Is my understanding correct?
No that’s not correct with radar units. It’s why GCquad is the premium launch monitor indoors. Even Trackman needs 2 full revolutions of the golf ball to get accurate spin data so indoors that equates to at least 14 feet of ball flight. It’s why you will see different shot shapes on Trackman vs gcquad indoors, especially with driver. Radar units are far better outdoors and the more ball flight you have the more data the unit receives and the more accurate the numbers are
@@davidmaxfieldgolfok thanks for taking the time. I knew it measured backspin and more space would help for that but I was always under the impression that the r10 calculated side spin and did not directly measure it.
anyone have ideas on how i can setup a golf sim at home? I have no ceilings in my home that are above 7 1/2 feet. Garage also only 7/12 feet. Also have no flat areas in back yard, all are on significant slopes.
That’s quite low, would be hard to even swing a full wedge
That is quit low! You could build one and work on short wedge shot and really dial in your 100 yard shots and in. But full swings probably isn’t happening!
ditched the R10 next video garmin R10 accuracy test omg make
your mind up unsubed find some new content
