LCD 5 stock FR is bad but EQ improved it. Its low distortion allows one to greatly EQ it. You don’t need to buy the headphone to understand this.

Anytime you “reviewed” headphones. You never bought the headphone, you always eq’d a headphone you had to the headphone you’re “reviewing’s” FR, then said they suck. If you did the same with LCD 5, they’d suck.
This time, you actually bought the LCD 5 and EQ’d it to measure correctly. If you never bought it, then proceeded to “review” it by eq’ing on of your headphones to the LCD 5’s FR, this headphone would have sucked to.

rme adi-2 is not enough. Get minidsp flex 2x4 balanced if you want something of similar quality.

I have had the pleasure to listen to the LCD 5 earlier this year and will have to agree. It is indeed a superb product. I have two minor problems with it however.
1: It would be wonderful if the pads could be swapped at home when they are worn out. In this regard it might be reassuring that Audeze has been purchased by Sony because it will hopefully make certain that the product will be serviceable for decades to come. Unless Sony goes bust some day 😳
2: It would also be nice if the impedance was slightly higher. When will the race toward lower and lower impedance’s end? What is the lowest impedance a MacBook or similar can drive before the distortion starts to increase? It’s strange with headphones there seems to be two camp’s those who argue for either ultra low impedances or who argue for almost absurdly high impedance. What happened to the middle ground which for me is the 30’ish ohms range?

At this level the impedance is not a choice but a consequence of the choices made at the design stage.
lcd-5 pads can be replaced on your own. You just need to contact audeze and they will send yuo pads. Impedance on its own doesn't affect sound quality.

@@chococereal2805 Qudelix has much better app and PEQ function, as well as better BT range and battery management. Qudelix is the better device but for all the non-strictly-sound reasons, they use the same DAC/amp chip and sound identical.

I think you should try EQ with the Avantone Planar II its build is no where near the Audeze but i thought the treble quality was incredible and free of any peaks for the price. Also it has no distortion and the best channel matching ive ever heard from 22 different headphones. Its within 0.5db margin the whole frequency response. Still i had to get rid of it because it was uncomfortable due to the stiff headband a real shame.

You can't claim that Audeze LCD-5 is the best headphone in the world, unless you've heard every headphone in the world and graphed them and put the science behind it, not every person can afford these headphones as well, plus every headphone in all budget ranges have strengths and weaknesses.

If your amp had more current that would help the bass btw. They need a lot more power and op amp based stuff doesn't always have the current RMS power.
Seems like this could also be argued for the Dan Clark Expanse with two eq around 100 hz and 6-10K hz. Or save a few thousand more to acquire large SAM Genelecs with a glm kit.

I don't know what should back up your claim that it has smooth treble above 7 kHz. The measurements of crinacle show a very ragged curve and the ones of VSG as well, additionally even a severe channel imbalance.
crinacle measurements show no channel imbalance. VSG does not use a gras rig. If you know how to read over-ear measurements u will know that LCD-5 is as smooth as a headphone can graph until u need to hear it for yourself to confirm. The technology behind it makes it so.
Even Resolve's measurements are nowhere smooth above 7kHz. If you want to argue that all these are measurement artefacts, you can do so as well for other headphones. For example the LCD-X, which has basically 0% distortion all over.@@Sharur1

LCD-X is much heavier and less comfortable than LCD-5. It also needs tons of high Q filters to smooth the response, leading to poor repeatability between individuals. Also, LCD-X upper treble is nowhere close to lcd-5:

The HE1000SE literally can do everything the LCD-5 can do + has a wider soundstage compared to the LCD-5 for less than half the price. Love to own the LCD 5 but unfortunately out of my price range! I do have the MM 500’s, they sound pretty good on roon. If Audeze preset is on and turned on to LCD 5 preset. There not perfect but I’m happy with them for now. Yeah it’s no LCD 5 but that’s expected they are like 2000 dollars more haha. Have you ever tried an electrostatic headphone? I imagine there not your cup of tea lol

I've been saying this for years, the audeze drivers potential is crazy. Although the lcd-4 is much much harder to eq, the thicker pads, larger drivers (also half a micron thick), higher impedence (better channel separation) gave it a bigger more immersive sound when I compared the two after eq. You should try a mass kobo amp, 394ii for example, the transparency is in another league. Without eq the lcd5 is what you said, dark and no bass.

We pay to relax with sound, not to study it. We choose headphones that suit our listening preferences based on the sound signature, which the manufacturers have invested a lot of money, technology and knowledge into producing. If I were the producer, I would be very sad when my signature was edited

some do use them, but they are meant to be comparable to flat on axis speakers with good bass dsp
I'd say it's a mix of missing knowledge and them having them knowing what is not "normal" in their setup and correcting for it in the mastering process. They often play the Song in multiple places (car, at home,Studio,...) to confirm if it's sounding good for most people.
Bit yeah if all used a standard it would make the mastering easier and listening more enjoyable for the average user since they could hear exactly what the artist did
