In our case or in my elementary school years, we used pupil but when we got to highschool until college we use student.
It’s so interesting to learn how different English can get in every country/area! Thanks for sharing

the internet says that pupils refers to younger learners who are below 18, and studetns refers to learners who are enrolled in a college or university. thats why i always thought, never heard about it being about formal and not formal
I asked a couple other American teachers about this and we all agree that pupil sounds more formal or technical, and student is more commonly used especially in conversation! So for us it doesn’t have anything to do with age. Very interesting how English differs around the world!
Ooh thats interesting where i live pupil is kind of emotionally distant/technical like you'd never say "I'm a pupil" or "My sister is a pupil" you'd usually only use it in news titles or if you were talking about someone/a group of students you didn't know e.g "The pupil was repeatedly harassed by classmates" "I think she's a pupil in St Mary's". Also pupil is used in schools of thought/religions so like beyond age 18 too e.g. "he was a pupil of Jesus" "They are pupils of the dark order"
@@bronaghmccabe yeah, every country and region may have different meanings. based on the interent, wich i dont know based on what they base it on, but probably british english as for the origin, but the official defenition is that pupil is someone who studies in school, and a student is someone who studies in a school or college. i never though about it before until know, but that was my defenition from my understanding. english is my third language, and we usually used the word student rather the pupil for everything. my englis teacher was american, and im from israel, we are the minority of countries that study american english, so we learn the american way of certain words and spelling

In my country, or least in my province, our former teacher told us that elementary students are who we refer to as pupils, then from high school up to college, we refer to them as students (but recently, it changed again to learners, as a more general term)
So instead of age, since age can vary even in the same grade, it was differentiated by year or grade levels.
This is interesting for me, because i believed up till now that this pupil/student thing came from other countries, and so i assumed it was mostly the case in other countries as well lol

디노의 본명은 '이 찬' 이지만 한국에는 집안마다 '돌림 자' 라는 것이 있고(요즘엔 많이 사용하지 않는 경향이 있음), 찬이네 집의 돌림 자는 '중' 이기 때문에 족보에는 '이중찬' 으로 올라가 있습니다ㅋㅋㅋ 그의 동생 '이 건' 또한 외 자 이지만, 족보에는 이중건으로ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
엌ㅋㅋㅋ 돌림자가 중요하긴 한가보네요... 우리 가족은 돌림자가 없어서 몰랐어요 😳
@@seannatv 저희 집도 돌림자를 사용하진 않지만 아직까지 사용하는 몇 몇 집들이 있긴한 것 같아요ㅎㅎ 굳이 돌림자가 아니더라도 이름을 비슷하게 짓는 경향은 아직 남아있기도 하고요.
I'm really surprised by the lack of class presidents in American schools 0.0 I thought you guys had home rooms? Here in Ireland (or at least in the school I attended) there is prefects (class presidents) for each class and then in the final year two of the prefects are chosen as head boy and head girl of the school. We also had our core classes together with our home class but all our optional classes were mixed (you had to do 4 optional classes) and once we added levels they were mixed as not all student in the same home class did the same level (Higher - Ordinary - Foundation were separated for Maths, English and Irish)
Over here 4th year is optional so each year Head boy and Head girl would alternate age e.g. In my year the Head girl was chosen from the half of the year who skipped 4th year so I wasn't eligible as I did 4th year, while Head boy was chosen from the half that had done 4th year. The Head girl from the year below mine had done 4th year while the Head boy hadn't etc.
Each class has 1 prefect, the prefects job is to serve as the middleman between the class and the form teacher (the teacher in charge of your class though not necessarily one who actually teaches you). Technically to report bullying you report to your prefect, who reports to form teacher, who reports to year head teacher, who reports to vice principal, to principal, to board of management based on how serious the claims are, when I was prefect no bullying was reported to me.
We also:
- Let the teachers know who was late
- Collected homework journals once a week to be checked by the year head
- Reported to the staff room if our teacher didn't show up so we could get a substitute
- Helped organize tables/chairs etc for school events
- Made sure the class didn't get lost on the way to the church for mass (if in 2nd to 4th yr) 5th and 6th prefects watched over the 1st years and made sure they stayed quiet and orderly in church
- We also went to religious functions, I was part of the guard of honour for some of my teachers parents funerals (not as serious as a military one)
- We also let teachers know stuff important so like our prefects in 1st year reported a PE teacher who harassed us repeatedly and we got him put on permanent paid leave
- Prefects also took important school photos with school sponsors cheques and such.
- We got a cute lil red badge to wear and it was mandatory to always wear it so we could be asked to help by teachers/students who didnt know us.
- One really thing though is we kinda got free reign of the hallways, if we were in the hallway during class it was assumed you were doing something important so you never got stopped >
Thanks so much for sharing! It’s so interesting to learn about how different schools are around the world. In America it depends on the school and area but even if a school has home room, usually it’s very short (like 20 minutes a day) and you just move on to your next class. So there’s no reason to have a class leader there since you don’t know them very well 🥲
