Great vid. Have just found one of these mowers and have no experience with them. Just heard that they make cleaner hay than the disc mowers as they dont whirl dirt up as much or at all.

If you go about twice that fast the grass will fall to the back better. PS: make sure you file your teeth so they’re super sharp. Dull teeth push the grass over more.

Hi and thank you for the video. I just purchased my first tractor. I've never operated one before. I have a drainage ditch that is about 300 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 4-5 feet deep. In a different area, I have a 45 degree bank that is about 6 feet tall. I want to keep the grass, weeds, and saplings cut down. I have a brush hog but it can't get at the areas. I'm thinking about getting a sickle mower to do these jobs. A new sickle mower can cost over $6,000. That is about 3 grand more than I can afford. I see some old sickle mowers online for around $1,500-$2,000. Since I know nothing about them, should I stay away from the used mowers? Do you have any recommendations?

Hi good question the newer sickle mower all they really have that are different from the older ones are hydraulic lifts. If you don’t mind spending the extra money the newer ones are somewhat easier to use but you can get a nice cheap sickle mower that’s old for around a couple hundred dollars they’re not expensive at all. Starting out if you decide to use a sickle mower and use it a lot for deep ditches like you say you may want to invest in a newer one

Thanks for the video. I just bought a Ford 501 7' sickle mower. It seems to be in pretty good shape. However I can't move freely with my hands it seems to be frozen or binding somewhere. Any ideas what I should look for?

That’s a good question yes look to see if any other blades are hitting on the shear beds. Or rock guards Also look to see if the bar of the sycamore is straight and true and it’s not curved at all

Thank you I'll check out those areas.
I had forgotten that the blade assembly was called a sycamore.
      Nice nostalgia word 👍

Could I clip pasture at 8” or 9” high or would the end of the sickle bar bend down to ground?

@@coyotecolors no problem; thank you. I bought the 7’ Enorossi and like it. Some of our field are a bit rough and the bar bounces around some, but I still like it.

@@triciahill216 they are certainly a good cutter. The bouncing may come from to fast of speed of the tractor.

Also have an italian cutter. A bcs duplex I just bought. I too have rought pasture and dont want to that close to the ground so had the same worries as you. Still havent found out where to hook that chain to the tractor. I dont have the plate mentioned in the manual.

If you find out where to hook that chain, please let me know. I'm digging in the ground too with my nine footer. I love how it cuts but I don't think I have it adjusted correctly and the guy from the dealership isn't very helpful
