I'm living with an age with the drugs, facilities and trained personnel to help me - good. I can watch EPL and UCL matches or films, TV series and documentaries sitting on a comfy sofa at home. I'm not rich but I have a home with most mod cons, and a fully stocked fridge, freezer and larder. I hardly ever need to go the bank or post office any more. I can shop online and have most of what I buy delivered. I can work from and train at home. Life is not just good-ish, it's excellent.

Still wouldn't put you in jail for speech. Conspiring to commit a crime isn't punished for what is said, it's punished for the criminal acts that are being planned.
Threatening violence also isn't punished for the words. It's the threat and the intimidation that is criminal.
Claiming you're being prosecuted for what you say is like claiming you are being arrested for driving when you've stolen a car.

I suppose I should share that I remember the Flying Scotsman coming to Australia too. At Spencer Street station I think (now renamed Southern Cross station). It's one of those things you half remember and then wonder, now you're old, if you imagined it. Apparently it arrived in Sydney by boat and came to Melbourne via Albury.

I heard that, in the USA (which has a very large amount of obese people in its population, "The Fat Controller" was never used as a term, as it was "un-PC" to the large amounts of overweight people in the USA:
    - "The American version of the television series always refers to him as Sir Topham Hatt, and never as The Fat Controller."
    (Source: - Wikepedia - "The Fat Controller" - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fat_Controller )

    • @SakraIgor0qNomoko
      @SakraIgor0qNomoko Před 3 lety

Can confirm, very large amount of fat people in the USA. It is continually odd how some PC terms go. Offensive to say "Colored People" as opposed to "People of Color". Like calling a 4H group "Children of the Corn" would really emphasize their humanity. And then there's calling very fat people "morbidly obese". They're blubber whales, not the next Mr. Creosote Blows. Nothing morbid about it. You know, the correct term for a crippled midget is "a differently-abled dwarf"? What's his magical ability, having a harder life than the average fellow?
And compared to these, PC terminology is lagging behind in other departments. We used to call people with pale skin tone and European ancestry "Caucasian" after the Caucasus Mountains. As if one day we looked at fire-haired Patty from Dublin and said "Looks a bit like a Turk, doesn't he?". Now we call them "White People". Oh, and not saying the "People" first in "Colored People" was such a problem?
More than that, what about the albinos, who are actually white? Like, "I'm sorry, you don't have skin tone now. Next best thing is (ruffling through the bin) er, 'Person with Albanism' ". It's same as going to a restaurant and getting your heart a flutter over the waiter pointing out the "head chef". I don't care what his first name is, he's the head chef, not "Mack with a Knife"!

I wouldn't care about new episodes with Indian trains, but I do agree that, over time, there's been a strange trend in simply being insulted.
I;m a 29 year old female and I see a lot of positive change in the world. A lot of it.
But when I post something online, I notice that some people are literally sitting there..just waiting for someone to mess up, so they can cuss them out.
Mainly -Americans and- frustrated people, that will find literally anything wrong with anything. One girl put silver paint on her face for a cosplay.
People felt it was too close to darkgrey, that was too close to black, therefore silver was blackface and she was harassed until she removed her account.
Thát kind of stuff. Toxic people.

I got Thomas for my son a few years ago. I thought 'narrated by Ringo Starr - cool'. One of the first episodes we watched had the train being bricked up in the tunnel. Well, that's enough if that. Turned it off.
Have to admit I don't like the unnecessary percussion track on the new one's theme. Sounds like they wanted a quick, cheap, way to jazz it up.

6:25 - 8:10 - If I turned up for work, then flat out refused to do my job for no good reason, I'd expect rightly I'd get the sack. Why is teaching such a basic reality to children apparently such a horrific idea? 🤷‍♂️ Plus, you omitted that the very next installment opens with Henry, having learnt his lesson, being returned to service. Heaven forbid mentioning the original Rev Awdry story also teaches children about the importance of forgiveness and second chances! 🙊
Bit of a shame that wound me up, because otherwise I mostly like the rest of this video, even if I don't totally agree. 😕
While the Fat Controller was indeed an authoritarian figure, the subtext has _always_ been trying to ridicule him for this, such as his mansplaining to Thomas' driver and fireman how to fish the fishes out of his tanks in one story, rather than actually helping out. We still come across pretentious a***holes like him in managerial roles, and I'd argue having him in stories as such, rather than just a loveable idiot has a positive educational purpose too.
As for the international characters: Yes, in the 21st century we need to teach children about global cultures, but other stories can surely do that better than Thomas... with _people_ . The Railway Series was focused on moral lessons (they were written by a Vicar, afterall), and the realities railway operation - okay, sentient engines excepted.😏 We now have a 1m gauge Kenyan loco, 3'6" gauge Japanese loco, 5' gauge Russian loco, 5'3" gauge Brazilian loco, and both 5'6" and 1m gauge Indian locos all happily running on 4'8½" gauge track without the slightest modification! Not to mention American, Australian, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, French and German engines, yes also of 4'8½" gauge, but all *much* bigger than UK locos (long story), magically not colliding with platforms or tunnel roofs either. If Rev Awdry wrote a story, however odd it may seem to most folk, it *did* happen to a real loco somewhere at sometime and inspire his story. Oh, and they can now all wiggle their buffers to wave at you, Thomas dreams to be an elephant, and they don't require a crew to operate 'to signify their freedom'!🤦‍♂️
Plus, I can't help feeling these international characters play up to stereotypes as a gimmick, rather than really doing much, if anything, to break barriers - what do others think here?😕
My arguement on Thomas' existential crisis being some 'new idea' is that Edward lacked confidence, and his stories focused on this. In one in particular he needed to haul a freight train, but struggled and help wasn't available, so his crew had to slacken the couplings and he took the load up again one wagon at a time... That's both a physics lesson on inertia and good metaphoric advice for mental health!😃 But Edward was considered 'too dull' and effectively axed to make room for the more vibrant, extroverted international characters... What does that tell us about the real extent of 'progresiveness' in this new ethos?😕
    Take care, stay safe,

I'd argue that having a bit of drama in children's media is healthy for them. We need to show them that the world isn't a fantasy world where everything always works out all the time, or else they won't be able to accept when things don't work out. Obviously I'm not saying we should go to the other extreme either, where it's nothing but misery in kids' tv shows, that'd be far worse. But having a little bit here and there won't do any harm.

Well I don't know when this was made, but for years now there are some things that you CAN'T say Gorman, because they are illegal. It is not directly to do with the snowflakes that get outraged over things they shouldn't really be outraged about that we love so much on the found poems.
Take Mark Meechan's case for example.
He thought it would be funny to turn his girlfriends dog into something horrible as a prank: a *azi. He recorded himself training the dog to act like a *azi, doing the h**ler salute to phrases like "g*s the jews", the pug watching *azi speeches etc. He then put it on CZcams and took a plane somewhere on vacation I think.
The video was called "M8 Yer Dugs A *azi" (without the censorship, back then CZcams didn't censor that word yet). At the time his youtube channel had almost no subscribers, I don't remember exactly maybe 8. The point is that he was not an influencer with an audience. It was probably mostly his friends that were gonna see the prank.
He arrived on his destination, got in the hotel, and when he got the hotel wifi his phone was drowned in notifications. What happened?
His video went viral. People were sharing it all over social media, and millions saw it and found it funny.
The problem is that at this point, some police or court official saw it. They wondered if it would be offensive for jews, despite receiving not a single complaint out of the MILLIONS of people that had seen it.
So they went to ask a sort of "representative" of the jewish community that they use on matters like this. I don't know why he is supposed to represent the jewish community but I know a fair share of jews who are offended that such a man speaks for them, as if all jews think the same. The man said it is offensive, and so Mark Meechan was convicted for hate speech. In the court case, the judge said that "context doesn't matter". He was deemed to pay a 800 pound fine, but that is the least of his problems. The worst of it is that he got smeared on all newspapers as a *azi and got a criminal record for hate speech. This means that he practically can't get a job. He was once to get a gig on a panel for BBC, but when the twitter mobs heard about this they pressured the BBC to change their mind, and succeeded. Any company that hires him will be ostracised for hiring a *azi, even though he is not one.
You know who else got angry when someone trained dogs to act like *azis? The goddam *azis. It is obviously ridiculing *azis, not supporting them.
This was years ago. Since then Mark Meechan has become very famous (censorship rarely works, it just draws attention to whatever you want to hide), and has become a symbol for human rights groups to rally for. To this day thousands, maybe millions, of people think he is a *azi.
Mark has raised money to try appealing the court's decision, and has gone to all the higher courts and legal options in the UK, being refused a jury at every step (because a jury of normal people would obviously not convict someone over a dog prank). Their only last option is the European Court of Human Rights. Last I checked Meechan was asking his supporters if the money was better spent on the ECHR or donated to some human rights organisation, and was letting the community decide. Meechan was feeling guilty that so much money was being wasted on his case and he didn't feel it was worth it to just waste more tens of thousands of pounds to just be rejected again when the money could do something useful.
I urge any of you with doubts to search for the original video and judge it for yourself. Just ask yourself if you have not said jokes worse or as offensive as that, and feel lucky that it didn't happen to you (maybe you were smart enough to self censor and only say it to people you trust instead of keeping it public, but he is a comedian, doesn't have that luxury).
Sorry for all the asterisks in case it's hard to read, I tried without them but the comment disappears with the "explicit language".

I think this is the only time I agree with the found poetry compared to Dave. Thomas the Tank Engine was better during the stop motion physical model trains era. The CGI doesn't do it for me and the musical interludes make me uneasy, whereas I don't find the old episodes outrageous. The authoritarianism of the Fat Controller was because it was based on Reverend Awdry's books and it was true to the original stories. None of the Thomas stories since the CGI transition in 2009 are based on any of the classic books AFAIK. As for the episode where Henry was bricked up, I agree with Ringo Starr, he deserved his punishment because he epitomised a naughty child being sent to his room, but in train form. It is extreme, yes, probably too much so, but it was right for the time and right for the original book. And anyway, it was resolved in the following episode. As for the hat blowing off Sir Topham's head, that joke didn't deserve a round of applause, there's nothing filthy about that whatsoever. And the dynamics reasoning is due to the camera panning and motion blur rather than the static shots shown in the old episode, which I think demonstrate a more scenic atmosphere than the computerised graphics of the modern iterations.
Modern Life is Goodish, yes, but the "Thomas the Tank Engine" part of Modern Life isn't as Goodish as it used to be. I'm not going to use the "Political correctness going mad/all PC on us" excuse, but I would rather watch or animate an episode of Thomas from the classic era than from the animated era for the reasons outlined above. Apologies for opening this can of worms but I needed to get this off my chest. I love Modern Life is Goodish, and will continue to do so, but this segment was the one where I disagree with Dave the most over any particular subject.

Human rights NEED discussion. I think it is NOT ok on any public institution, and in many cases it should be outlawed in some aspects of private life.

"You can still say whatever you like but now there are consequences" makes a great soundbite but it doesn't really make any sense.
In any time in the past there were things you could say without consequence and things you couldn't and that is still true today.
What has changed is what you can say and in some cases who is doling out the consequences.
It's certainly reasonable for someone to say that on balance they think those changes are good (though I would suggest if they think all the changes are good they are completely unaware of some of the things that have caused trouble and they don't foresee how it's possible that changes just over the horizon will effect them)
For an example of some of the political correctness crusade that worries me the person who made a really awful joke on twitter about a disease not being a danger to them because they are white (I'm sure it made sense to her at the time) she lost her job and received an unbelievable amount of hate, completely disproportionate to tweeting something she thought was being ironic but the internet decided was racist.
I think even the people who approve of every way what is acceptable has changed should be very wary of the danger of a twitter mob and very wary of the infrequent cases of "hate speech" that aren't hate speech and "discrimination" that isn't discrimination that make it to court because the effect of one person beating those charges is still a chilling effect on freedom of speech.
