Humble yourself comes from the heart.

This is my understanding of "die to self" -- Jesus told us to "pick up our cross daily" is this not saying we are to deny ourselves / die to self, die to the fleshly desires, passions etc. for as long as we are here on earth we continue to be faced with temptations. "Die to self" has NOTHING to do with humbling yourself!
When we come to salvation, we are born again, but we also continue dying to self as part of the process of sanctification. As such, dying to self is both a one-time event and a lifelong process.
    Luke 9:23 KJV
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

We humble ourselves by surrendering all that we are to him for his will to be done in our lives and not our own will to be done. Because if you don't surrender you will find yourself fighting with him and you will be trying to be will full selfish and rebellious because you want your own way and that's not how God works we need to surrender everything to him for him to take control and so we will be fully dependent on him and not independent of him. To his glory in our lives not our glory and not self seeking but we seek his glory and his righteousness.

The biggest part of finally learning to rest, coming from a lordship salvation church of fruit inspectors, is identity. Through your ministry and other grace teachers on you tube I to the fact that I am not my flesh (which was put to death on the cross) with the Lord's spirit somewhere on the sidelines. Before, I could not grow because I was always focused on my sinful habits, always identifying with my flesh. We used to sing songs and talk about denying of self and " more of you, less of me." Now I see it is because of believing that I need to deny my flesh (me) and more of God. I was not seeing that I had everything for life and Godliness already, always focusing on everything being a progressive work. The change started when I realized that everything was accomplished over 2000 years before I was born. I am fully forgiven regardless of the struggles in my flesh. "Just a sinner saved by Grace," was all I had ever thought. I could never grow in a " turn from sin or I might never be saved theology." That forces one to always focus on their habits and keep track, which is allowing the law to bring power to sin, which is an endless cycle. I had always related to God's view of me through performance. Thank You for your ministry Pastor Farley. God Bless.

Die to yourself means that the old self and habits die and thru Christ Jesus and your walk with him you become a new creation. But it can be harder for people that turn away and then come back because you have to repent and seek salvation and recommit and ask the lord to restore your knowledge of him.

Just ask Jesus to help you humble yourself and He will.

I think there are a lot of sayings and quotes that Christians use in today's day and age that aren't found in scriptures. There are also a lot of practices and traditions Christians do today that aren't biblically blessed (the way we celebrate Christmas, Easter, etc. However, I've always taken "more of you and less of me" means putting God first and not making it about you as we have a tendency to do since we are human. I'm not sure that I think that this is a wrong saying for Christians to say. It's recognizing our dependency on God. Even Christians have a tendency to focus on themselves daily than they do on Christ Jesus. The is just a reminder to ourselves that our dependency and focus should be on God, not on ourselves. The saying itself may not be found in scriptures, but depending and focusing on God is biblical. When I pray to God I will sometimes ask God to help me to make my daily life, thoughts, emotions, etc. more about Him and less about me. I can't say that I've ever felt the Holy Spirit convicting me that this is wrong to pray to God. Sure we are born again as believers and we have a new life and the assurance of salvation by Jesus dying for our sins on the Cross and His bodily Resurrection to sit at the right hand throne of God. But we sin until the day we die. We still have to continually repent, we have to ask for forgiveness from the ones we have wronged with our sin, etc. Jesus is the only one without sin. If you look at the N.T., specifically Paul, James, Peter, John, they continually gave instructions and cautions to the early church Christians because of their practices, following culture rather than following Jesus, etc. One could argue that even the early Christians were having problems with making it more about themselves than about God...meaning following the world rather than following Jesus.
