Erving's defense was no worse than MJ's and Doc was a much better shot-blocker. Jordan had a better outside shot than Dr. J. That's the best I can do.

what about his play making..so many assists ,particulary on the double teams,so simple,fundamental and efficient and sometimes fancy too, in paints full of bodies..no selfisness at all..if The Sixers gave Dr J a point forward role with his super fast first step he would have had way more assists drawing the second and third defender on him..the man was not even a ball dominant player at all,which is very very exceptional for his status in the league!

Amazing athleticism combined with an incredible scoring instinct. Nobody did it like the Doc. He could score anywhere from midrange and outside consistently too. The 1980 Finals was classic. The start of the greatest era in basketball.
Dr J apart of 30000(8th) pnts also has 10000 boards(more than many centers like ben wallace), 2000 blocks(triple lebron/jordan/kobe) 5700 assists and 7th all time steals to this day..when he went to the sixers the managment asked him and this is well known fact, to drop his scoring so the rest of the egos in that team will be ok and take only 10 to 15 shots per game..that was a 40 per cent reduction from his usual ABA attempts per game..he ended up with 24 ppg career and slightly over 50 per cent fg percent whitch was the same during the ABA and NBA years..so do the math and you ll see that with a few extra attempts if he was in a more Julius Erving type of "system" like Kobe,Lebron,Westbrook or Harden he would easily be 28 + ppg player with way more boards , steals and blocks from all aforemantioned.. Have in mind that the 70s was a team/us type of era and the mentality was way different than the years that followed and the sixers have completely flopped two other all time greats(CB and AI) proving themselfs very unsucessfull coaching/managment/backoffice wise..yet in the Julius Erving era they went to the NBA finals 4 out of 7 times and got their only title since...
The difference between the Sixers winning multiple titles was Kareem playing with Magic. If Doc would have had Moses all of that time in the NBA he would have at least 4 chips ‼️

After working an ABA game where he saw the Doctor for the 1st time, Yogi said to some writers, "I just saw the greatest basketball player in the world," (this from a ref who saw Elgin, Bob Petit, Jerry, Oscar, Bob Cousy, Bill & Wilt). For this infraction of public commentary on a player Yogi was fined $50 (it was the early 70's). He wrote a check for $100 with this note, "Here's the $50 fine for saying it plus, another $50 for the next time I say it."

To me, the best player of the Finals was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (although he missed the final game due to injury), and the second best player was Julius Erving (he was so consistent throughout the series), and magic was the third best (but he won the Finals MVP because of his performance in Game 6).
