- As a five-time Grammy Award-winning musician, Gary Burton is one of the most commercially successful mallet players in history. For the better part of his professional career, Burton has used his position to help educate and mentor the next generation of musical talent, teaching at institutions around the world.
Vic Firth is excited to present Gary's 8-part Vibraphone Masterclass series to you, recorded backstage in Boston's Symphony Hall. In this series, Burton covers the full gamut of common questions on the instrument -- from it's history to his famous 4 mallet grip. - Hudba
I can't get enough of Burton's nonchalance. He says, "Okay, so this is how you do it," and then bursts into god-tier improv. What a marvelous player.
And then _ends_ it with a unselfconscious, straightforward "You can hear some notes are accented..." like it was nothing. Masterful.
Man, that sound, the decades past and you´re still the best!
a master of the vibes
The advice about how to use dynamics in phrases is crucial to guitar, vibes, or piano players.
I knew it, Gary Burton is a robot.
0:33 - This is an interesting observation especially when one considers that Burton featured so many guitarists in his bands, ANOTHER instrument with the same challenge.
Very useful video- thank you!!

No question - the substance and view of Mr Burton's excellence was enhanced further by the large, glaring watermark.
Yes it's a Sustain Pedal like the Piano & I would prefer to play the Vibraphone Seated so that my Foot can pivot on the Sustain Pedal like on the Piano
was he playing to the chords of On Green Dolphin Street at 2:30?
believe so :)
Yes
Just wondering.....how many jazz vibraphonists are on Gary's level? What are their names?
Here’s my personal list of people near him:
@@australianclaude_527 what list?
@@CribNotes that’s the joke, I don’t believe anyone is even close. Other famous players are Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton, but they only play two mallets
worth checking out simon moullier, joel ross, sasha berliner, patricia brennan
@@enthusiast180 thank you!!
Sorry Gary, but you said a lot about everything and very little about pedaling.
