  • The annual revenue of Koch Industries is bigger than that of Goldman Sachs, Facebook, and U.S. Steel combined. Koch is everywhere: from the fertilizers that make our food, to the chemicals that make our pipes, to the synthetics that make our carpets and diapers, to the Wall Street trading in all these commodities. But few people know much about Koch Industries and that’s because the billionaire Koch brothers want it that way.
    Christopher Leonard, author of Kochland: The Secret History of Koch Industries and Corporate Power in America, discusses the hidden role of Koch Industries in American life.

    This company isn't a "mini society", it's a cult. I'm from Wichita and I've watched friends and other acquaintances get sucked into that world and change, not in a good way. The "fortress" is necessary to protect company secrets but also because they're hated by so many people and receive death threats. The grandkids go to private school in Wichita and have to have bodyguards accompany them to school and Charles Koch's estate, while it doesn't quite look like a fortress, is walled and highly surveilled. I'm sure he has 24/7 security on staff, too. I can't imagine having to live that way.

    Well if the politicians didn't give themselves enormous power i doubt that businesses would have a need to lobbying .

    • @carstereobandits

      We (theoretically) give politicians power in a democracy, thus corporations lobby for their own interests. Politicians are mostly concerned with re-election through money from corporate lobbying at this point, so are politicians bowing to corporate power because the politicians have too much power, or have corporations hijacked that power through lobbying?

    So one might ask why people just keep wanting more money and can never seem to have enough. Its like hoarding its all based in fear of not having enough and this becomes normalized and accepted and admired but its just a disease.

    • @buzoff4642
      @buzoff4642 Před 3 lety +6

      "based in fear"
      The Koch family's is based in total rejection of responsibility, and resentment there is a backstop: government. They feel they've the right to pollute grounds and water, to chemically taint and kill employees, etc.
      Dark Money, by Jane Mayer. Koch employee to another, (paraphrased) a human life is only worth a damage award, which is less than operating without safety or health regulation compliance.
      This goes way beyond simple hoarding, its pathological.
      What surprises me is their purchase of government phrased as "influence" and not what it is, corruption.

      Bringing a case against C.K. would be difficult even if the evidence were overwhelming, which I would guess that it is. Why? Because he has enough money to buy his way out, and even if somehow convicted, what would a hundred million bucks buy Koch in the way of armed guards? That answer could be provided by Erik Prince of Blackwater, Betsy Devos's brother, all active members of the USA's white supremacist cabal (& don't forget Dubya and Trump).

      @BCMortgage Read "Dark Money" by Jane Mayer. These people have an evil philosophy, and if you understood that, you'd understand that you are one of the people he and his kind view as expendable units to be used to make rich people even richer. You'd also understand that they are people who firmly believe that the govt. shouldn't shouldn't interfere (i.e. regulate) at all in business and financial matters, and yet go to the govt. to use it to buy legislation that allows them to avoid paying taxes and avoid safety regulations.
