  • I visited Rollberg Kino in 2001. This was a nice cinema. This is a short video. We see one of the Projection Rooms and an auditorium. The projectionist was really busy, and it was kind of him to give me some time. A good watch. The cinema is still operational today 23 years after my visit (March 2024).

When we (UCI) opened the 12-screen multiplex in Edenborough, it was decided by the purchasing dept (of course) to buy Christie projectors and lamps. Against my wishes, as chief engineer at the time, what did I know about projector!!
Two weeks after opening 3 of the 12 screens had to be closed down due to one of the fiber gears failing. All in all, we had 16 gears fail in under 3 months. I returned the projector heads to Christie and put Vic 5 in place. They refunded the cost with Christie lamps, mostly 2KW. They worked well for a while, but the light dropped off quite a bit in time. They were also prone to becoming unstable. No where near as good as Wotan lamps. I have never used any Christie stuff since.

Hi MIke, Great to hear from you. What an interesting story about your adventures with the Christie projectors. It was good that you could work something out with them to solve your issue. I'm sure their Digital projectors work well, as Dolby choose them for their Dolby Vision system. Take care.

@@fp30e I'm pleased you likes my little story. Just a pity I cannot spell CHRISTIE correctly! I better correct it before someone else notices.

When you see these cinemas in Germany as nice as some of them are (although this one looked like dodgy strip club from the 70's with those glittety curtains), you realise how fortunate we were in the UK with the picture palaces we once had. Sadly a lot of them are now lost thanks to the boring clinical multiplexes which in turn are closing down due to crappy films and online streaming. Very lucky to have lived through the decades from 60's to early noughties and experience proper cinema!!!

Hello Dark Vader, I think Berlin had their picture Palaces as well. Zoo Palast, Berlin Palst etc they all had their day annd many more which are no longer here. I agree with you, we are very lucky to have lived thru the decades from the 60's and seen the Big Pictures Palaces before they all started to disappear. But back to Berlin and the former East in particular, I am very lucky to have been welcomed into these very special cinemas that survived during the cold war. They are also very special. Fortunately a lot of them are now captured in 'Memories of Cinema' CZcams video. Always happy to receive your well placed comments. Take care and Thank you.

Good Morning (from the UK) Mike, You have said nothing wrong at all. I look forward to your comments. I recently had some stupid comments, and I turned the comments off. Constructive or opinions are most welcome, but not to have a go at me. I'm just getting ready to go for a 1000hrs screening. I will put the comments back on when I return. Always good to hear from you. All the best.

@@fp30e Hello Fred, that's good to know. Like you, I have many a story to tell from my 50 odd years in the industry. I would not worry about the few idiots that makes the odd comment. We all get them. I'm pleased to say I have very few on my channel. I never remove such comments anyway. I let people form their own opinion. I'm always amazed how many good people will stand up for me and often makes the commenter look a complete idiot. Personally, I really appreciate the time spent editing and presenting your videos, and look forward to seeing lots more. Take care, Mike

@@MichaelBeeny Hi Mike. Thank you for your kind comments. I have reset ICA to play with comments, but it's not working. I'll post another video in a few minutes and make sure the settings are on for comments. There are a lot of trolls out there, and when you open their profile they often have no followers but have been a member of YT for many years.

You have not allowed comments on your video about the Eiszeit Kino in Berlin, which you incorrectly state was in former East Berlin, whereas it is very much in Kreuzberg and was always in West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was on the other side of the river, and in fact is now the East Side Gallery. Sarah who ran the Eiszeit used to tell how when she was a kid she would feed the ducks on the river, and so would kids on the other side. The ducks were free to come and go as they pleased but people were not.

Hello ElectricFilms, Thank you very much for your comment. You are so right Eiszeit is in West Berlin. Thank you for pointing that out. The time when I recorded this video Kreuzberg ,was a very poor area of West Berlin, but not so much today. Everything smacked as being former East Berlin. The old run-down buildings, and graffiti on the stairs was so in common with several other East Berlin Kinos. Maybe someone told me. I appreciate that you took the trouble to let me know. I will make a note in the Description of the video. Thank you so very much, Spoolbox
