  • Turisas - End of an Empire from the album "Stand up and fight"
    I do not own anything
    LYRICS
    The time is here
Time to be brave, while others fear
Fear the stars, the moon and the Holy Ghost
It's what lurks in the dark that scares us the most
You're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't
What tomorrow brings is still the unknown
But can you condone? How to atone?
    I'm so alone
    How can I know I won't bemoan?
Every tale, needs it's star and knave
Which part I play is yet to be unveiled
    History: just what's agreed
Yet it will judge both you and me
Shield and swords, will win you wars
But in the end, the battle's for our hearts
    Fought by bards
    You look back in time
    No-one heard the bells chime
    You wonder how
    How could they this allow?
    Exactly the same
Are the questions aimed your way
    When looking back on today
    The time is here
Time to be brave, let others fear
We know the walls will fall
But out of the ashes a new day will dawn
    We've enslaved the world
    We have slaughtered, we've burned
All, in the name of our faith
    Only a fool would except
Others to settle for anything less
The tide is about to turn
    The sea has pulled away
    Like small children we play
    What is this?
Come take a look at all these fish!
    As long as you spend
There is more for you to lend

Someone always saves us in the end
    The time is here
Time to be brave, let others fear
We know the walls will fall
But out of the ashes a new day will dawn
    We've enslaved the world
    We have slaughtered, we've burned
All, while knowing what is best
Might take a year or ten,
    Generations of men,
We've passed the point of no return
    Fifty-three days in fifty-three
Fifty-three steps for you to acknowledge your defeat
The last in line: Ultimus Romanorum
    Evolution through revolution
A frozen river, enough to tip an empire
Stalingrad, Waterloo, Bastille, Poltava, Stamford Bridge,
At Manzikert it all would end.
    Tough are times ahead
    With care you tread
    Before you know
    Out we need to bow
    Enjoy it while it lasts
    Soon forgotten in the past
Our time here ended so fast
    Open your eyes
    Yourself apprise
    All empires find their demise
The taller they are, the harder they fall
    The snowball
    Is on the roll
    Open your eyes
    Yourself apprise
New powers are on the rise
So strong is our faith, (in that) the world stays as is
Until it hits, like shattering glass to bits
How did this happen? How could this happen?
    How could the empire fall?

I love this band. Their songs about the Medieval Greco/Roman Empire you most know as Byzantium is huge. They speak to Greek hearts truths that hurt.
    But that's history.
They seam to have deep knowlege about their scandinavian ancestors and the Empire. Congratulations to this band that could easily be real honorable Varangian Guards.
Yes all empires fall its nature's law that what is born it dies.
I felt with this song that i was on the walls on that day of May of 1453.
    Bravo!

One of the most gloriously over-the-top epics I've ever heard - and I've heard a lot. Sometimes MORE *is* better. It suddenly looks like Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish and Warlord Nygård of Turisas will be battling over which one can compose the grandest spectacle.

Iordáin Breathnach The West? Do you mean these betrayers that attacked Constantinople in 1204? Both East and West Roman empire are to blame for the disaster. Well, at least Rome was saved. But since I am a Greek, I can tell you that losing our center, Constantinople, was a tremendous disaster. Asian hordes now live very close to us in Anatolian penisula

    My friend Byzantines NEVER existed.
In fact they were medieval Romans.
In 1453 the last emperor signed as Imperator Romanorum in latin
and as Autocrator ton Romaeon (gr: Αυτοκρατωρ των Ρωμαιων) Αugoustos.
Roman Empire died in 1453 actually. The fact that Greeks were the last Roman citizens is an other matter. :)

Interesting, but what is normally thought in History is that the Bizantine empire was the Oriental part of the Roman Empire that survived the barbarian invasions, i mena Constantinopla which would be in Turkey (not very close to Italy) was the capital, so i wouldnt say they were exactly Romans, but i am not really an historian....

Leaders will always try to paint themselves as the followers of a great empire that came before, so as to not lose legitimacy.
If we go with that Logic Alexander wasn't a Macedonian because he understood himself to be a leader of the Greek people and he died with that belief.
In the end, however, he is a Macedonian.

    • @AnthoniusII
      @AnthoniusII Před 5 lety +3

If you would make a small research in Middle Ages Roman Empire's myths (you call it Byzantine but its wrong) you would find out that when Constantine The Great finished New Rome -the one you call Constantinopolis- there was a prophecy that the city would fall only when fried fish would come out to the city's shores. In there despert times people of Constantinople claimed that saw such fish in the shores of the city so the city was doomed no matter what. That droped even more the population's morale. Remember that in 1200 Constantinople had 500000 people when London and Paris had the same time 15000 people each, but in 1453 the city had less than 50000 people that became supersticius in maximum way.

@@AnthoniusII Yeah but it doesn't change the fact that the line is ridiculous. Usually when you get a lyric this weird and corny it's a parody band but Turisas was taking themselves seriously which made it stand out. It seems like they could have included the historical evnt without one of the cheesiest lines in power metal history (and that's saying a lot given the level of cheese in power metal).

    • @Goldenkitten1

I feel you. There are a few songs out there where they just suddenly drop an utterly hilarious line in the middle of a song and it takes you out of it for a moment. Like I mentioned to the above person I get the historical context but surely they could have included it in a less clunky line. Still a great song.
