Really appreciate the technical detail. Just getting into macro and this was super helpful.
Hi I have just started watching your channel and you have given me ideas on stacking and how you have your camera around your neck to make it easier to hold still 😀
The bug at your 7:00 mark is most likely Cercopis vulnerata, a.k.a. the black-and-red froghopper, which is a member of the spittle bugs - like the ones whose young produce "cuckoo spit" - although the young of this species live underground. Also: much kudos to you and your videographer for going out at 5 AM to take photos and make the video!
Your images are getting...wow!
Amazing tour mate 👏😍 can't wait to see more of this !
Thank you! More videos coming soon 👍
Thanks for the detailed Video.
You're welcome!
Love your last insect shot the best 👌
I'm glad you like it! That was probably the hardest to edit
The fly with the fungi is called Fly Death Fungi Complex (Entomophthora muscae) Nice images!
Thank you! I've seen a lot of them recently
Very steady focus stacking...!! I do that a lot with the same camera and lens. The only issue is I chose a faster flash, Godox v860, so diffuser is bigger now and my hand is always tilting to the front. 😀
🙌🙌
For the metallic green beetle shown at the 12:11 mark: it's very difficult to be sure from such a close-up view but looks like it may be the green malachite beetle, Malachius bipustulatus, judging from your description plus features like the hairy wing case, yellow "face" and especially the very noticeable, bright-red fleshy areas just behind the head and along the sides of the abdomen (called "cocardes" - they can be used to emit defence odours when they are alarmed).
How fun is it that you're sponsored by Orchestral Manoevers in the Dark! hehe! Great video and it's given me several new ideas for the field this summer. Cheers
O-M-D I see what you did there. Thanks, I'm glad to have inspired you!
Thanks!
Much appreciated!
I just discovered our channel. I am really enjoying your videos. Keep up the good work.
I'm glad you're enjoying them!
Great video! Watching you focus stack is making me a bit jealous. 😂 My current flash has a horrible 4-5 second recycle time and makes stacking insects quite difficult. Love your images. 👍
Thank you! My old setup had bad recycle times. I'd suggest getting the godox v350 if you can or any flash with a lithium ion battery
Excellent one brother
Thank you!
Great Video Bro
Thanks!
Muy bueno chaval
Hello. I'm a new friend here from Singapore. Your macro photo looks amazing. I really enjoy watching your macro photography adventure. You got 1 LIKE from me. Have a nice day. 👍🔔
Thank you! I'm glad you like my content 😁
Excellent video Jamie, would be interested to see your camera and flash seeting for this purpose of your macro, i also use an Olympus EM-1 mkIII and 60mm macro lens, with no flash so would be very interested in your set-up.
Thank you! I put the camera settings on each image in this video. Flash settings wise, I tend to use 1/16 to 1/32.
Keep it up
Superb 👌
Thanks!
Your Demoiselle Damselflies, were Male and Female. Female being the second one. Great videos , love the images, looking forward to seeing more of what you do.
Thanks for the identification, and I'm glad you like the video!
Stunning technique and images. Such a pain that my R5 can't use flash for stacking as well as being too lazy to get up at 5.00..look forward to your next video, cheers!
U have an amazing canon
Much appreciated! I was meant to film this video a day earlier but I failed to wake up at 5am 😂
Great video, really enjoyed it. It would be amazing if you could share your full custom settings for your focus stacking
Thanks! I use bracketing mode set to 40 images, 0.2 second recycle time, focus differential of 1 and I have my flash on 1/16 most of the time.
@@JamieSpensley amazing TY
@@JamieSpensley Hello, really appreciate these behind the scenes videos and thanks for listing all you settings and gears in the video. May I know how you choose 40 shots? I can set only up to 15 shots in Focus Bkt settings on EM M3 camera. Thanks in advance!
Pro tip: bring some scissors with you, that makes removing leaves and blades of grass a lot easier ; )
That's a good idea. It would save me the several minutes I spent trying to cut the blade of grass with my one hand 😂
Amazing work. I have a question. You were able to use flash brush firing mode even with focus stacking. Does mechanichal sutter can perform flash brust firing. I am unable to do such with my R5 and godox v1. Any ideas?
Your camera should be able to fire the flash in burst mode using mechanical shutter. Check your cameras settings in the menu to see if silent shutter is enabled or any quiet shutter mode as this makes your flash not able to fire on most Canon cameras.
really nice video man! love seeing the bts of your instagram shots. Any reason your bracketing mode isnt just set to the maximum number of frames allowing you to just press the shutter again when you've got the frames you need? also holy stacks dude, i cant believe theyre your go to lmao
Thank you! I didn't even know you could do that with the bracketing mode 😂 Thanks for letting me know
@@JamieSpensley haha, Rafi had to tell me it existed a while back, its really not mentioned anywhere in the settings or anything. Glad I could help
Hi Jamie, great videos. What settings do you use to get your flash to fire so quickly when photo stacking? I have OM1 with Olympus flash unit but I cant get the flash to fire faster than once every second which is way too slow for handheld focus stacking
Maybe it's not the camera but the flash that causes this problem. I also have the OM-1. I have a Godox V350 flash which works about the same as the one in this video. Before I used the Godox TT350 which was slower and made much less flashes after each other before recharging then the V350. I use the flash mostly at 1/32. The V350 has a more powerfull battery.
Great job again. I just wonder how sore your hand is after holding the camera in one hand.
Thank you! The camera is very light so my hands are totally fine. My hands would have been sore with my old setup 😂
Hey Jamie, have you thought about doing an entomology degree? You seem to have great ID skills for a young man. You have a steady hand and good eyes for spotting. Are you using 1/32 flash intensity on manual mode for bracketing?
I haven't thought about an entomology degree. I quite like the mystery of not knowing some subjects. Makes things exciting when I'm going out to take photos. I set my flash to manual at all times and usually set it between 1/16 and 1/64 depending on my camera settings and other factors.
Love your videos mate, your photos look insane. Fellow macro photographer here, respect my man. Love the Brummie accent too haha.
Much appreciated! I'm surprised the bugs don't fly away when they hear a brummie accent coming towards them 😂
@@JamieSpensley The accent probably puts them to sleep mate. Honestly, love your videos, keep going, here for it all. Great talent! Need more content. Subbed.
oltre agli stack quanti punti di messa a fuoco hai messo?
Bracketing mode on autofocus!?
Hello Jamie. What are your flash settings for it to fire so rapidly? I didn't think the v350 could recycle so quickly?
Between 1/16 and 1/32
Please advise what should be the starting point for Focus Stacking?
Experiment with stacking software and begin with small stacks to get the hang of it. I will make a dedicated video to focus stacking sometime soon
Hey Jamie, I love your Vids. Nice to see how people shoot macro Fotos. But I wanted to know where I can buy these couloured background cards. I'm looking for some. You may send an affiliate link?!
Thank you and keep on your good work
Thank you! I got my backgrounds from a local craft shop, cut them into a5 size and sellotaped them together. I'll link you to some similar ones here: amzn.to/3NtZJ7l
@@JamieSpensley thank you very much!
Love your images. 1 question I have. How do you get your flash to flash continually like that? What are the settings??
I use a low power of 1/64 most of the time which means the flash can fire several shots without buffering
@JamieSpensley Thanks Jamie. I'll try it and see how I get on. Hopefully, my pictures will be like yours!! 🤣🤣
hi Jamie I've got a canon R3 and struggling with the settings for bracketing. when i set it to bracketing it wont work with the flash I'm not sure if I'm missing a setting. Any ideas?. Oh and I'm new to Macro and the camera. Thank you for any advice you have.
Pete
I'm not sure about Canon bracketing but my only advice would be to try turning off silent shutter in the menus and set the flash to manual
you mentioned everything, but not the diffuser... where did you get it.
Directly message Cygnustech on Instagram to get one
I will be new to Olympus and macro with flash …. HOW IS THIS ACCOMPLISHED ALL HANDHELD … This seems like it would feel impossible? Love your videos … i am hoping i can do this !!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Yeah, I shoot handheld and use olympus' automatic focus bracketing. And all you have to do is keep the camera and subject still and let the camera do the rest. And then stack those frames using Zerene stacker on my pc
@@JamieSpensley
Thank u ….will try
Any tips for how you hold so steady ?
Get one knee on the floor, rest your camera on the knee and stretch the camera strap out until it is tight. Might make a video on this soon.
What's the flash equipment you have? I want to buy it and then use with the Olympus 60mm F 2.8 lens I'll be buying. Thanks in advance!
Godox V350o with a cygnustech diffuser. You have to message cygnustech on Instagram to purchase one. If you purchase the flash through my affiliate link I'd highly appreciate it :)
Dear Jamie, can you please show the process of stacking on your computer? Thank you very much!
I have and it will be uploaded this Sunday :)
@@JamieSpensley Great! I am waiting!
What type of diffuser are you using?
Cygnustech diffuser
Hey what camera and lens are using,?
All linked in the description
Nice work! What software are you using for stacking?
Thanks! I use Zerene Stacker
@@JamieSpensley Nice Video! Would you do a video on your process for stacking in Zerene?
@@AkaiMiso yes. That video will be coming soon 👀
@@JamieSpensley Thank you!
what diffuser are you using?
Cygnustech diffuser
Does your preset have a maximum number of 40 shots for stacking?
No, you can set it to as many shots as you want. 40 is typically a good number for me
@@JamieSpensley What editing software do you use for focus stacking?
Hi. Thanks for your enjoy vidéos. How Can you have 40 images for your focus stacking ? In this body you Can make 8 isn't it ?
What Len that you use for this photo shoot?
Olympus 60mm macro
Hey mate, how do you edit the stack in post? Cheers
I edit my images in Lightroom, export them as Tiff files, stack them in Zerene Stacker, export the stacked image as a Tiff, and then do some final touches in Photoshop.
@@JamieSpensley thanks for the reply 👍🏻
Ciao! Potresti dirmi il nome o il modello del tuo softbox? Grazie! Complimenti! 🇮🇹
Cygnustech diffuser
Why is the exposure so long? This can lead to wiggling. The more you take it off your hands.
Bracketing mode limits the camera to 1/50 shutter
@@JamieSpensley thanks! that's no good i think
