American Pie - WTF You Need to Know About This Franchise

- The American Pie series is perhaps the most iconic series of teen sex comedies ever made. When the first movie came out in 1999, it was greeted as an affectionate updating of the classic eighties sex comedy formula, which gave us films like Porky’s, albeit with a classier, more sensitive spin. It helped popularize the “gross-out comedy,” which became one of the dominant comedy genres of the early 2000s before being replaced by the “Frat Pack” comedies starring Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller and others.
All in all, four theatrical American Pie movies and a slew of DTV spin-offs were made. The flagship series starred Jason Biggs as the clumsy Jim, who awkwardly pursues a foreign exchange student, Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth), but eventually falls off Alyson Hannigan’s band camp buddy, Michelle. Meanwhile, his buddies Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Paul (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Oz (Chris Klein), and, most iconically, Stifler (Seann William Scott) pursue their own conquests, while Stifler’s seductive mother (Jennifer Coolidge) and Jim's lovable dad (Eugene Levy) lurk in the background.
In this video, which is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes and produced by Tyler Nichols, we dig into the history behind the classic series and try to decide which of the four movies hold up and which (if any) don’t.
Do you think the American Pie movies hold up? Let us know in the comments!

Oz did seal the deal on prom night. He just didn't kiss and tell which was a big part of his character development.
I always noticed that and wondered if I just took it differently. Glad to hear someone else saw it that way
indeed. He wakes up next to her, without a shirt on, which is kind of visual slang for having sex. Also if he didn't, they would've showed us the denial.
He said the next day at the hot dog place they didn't. But he could have been lying.
@@klabkebash Yes, he was putting on a front out of respect for Heather. Everyone else "Got Laid" he actually experienced true intimacy so he kept it between himself and Heather.
@@klabkebash he says he won’t kiss and tell. I don’t think he explicitly says that he did not have sex. But if I’m remembering it wrong, yes he’s lying
How dare you say these movies didn’t age well. The main 4 are amazing and always will be. Otherwise great recap and look-back.
came to say the same. I hope the new one is not Woke.
they'll shoe horn in some black folks, that'll fix it. Smh
came to say the opposite. these movies aged like milk, lets hope the new ones are updated to modern times
@motomamiii modern times suck. Everyone is offended so easily.
@@Turbo5150 yeah, the trolls are out, don’t feed them.
I'm a class of 99 grad and this movie really hit the nail on the head for the times.
Same here and I totally agree.
Ok boomer
@@shadowaccount "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Class of 2021 and I can say the same
I mean bandcamp if you wanted to make an argument it could easily be apart of the main story in a way but that's really it is okay and the book of Love was pretty good beta house wasn't the worst but they're actually entertaining to watch as standalone movies but yeah when it comes to girls rule that one was just really bad they could have done something good with it but yeah I don't think anybody really knows how how to write for girls like even women don't really know how to write for girls cuz they're just trying to sit there and make the same type of jokes that guys do and it really doesn't work depending on on the setup I'm not saying that girls can't be funny I'm just saying they could have been written better
It would absolutely fly in today's world because 9/10 controversies don't leave the internet & would only make the movie more of a hit. Then again comedies don't exactly do blockbusters anymore but a controversy would increase it's chances of success.
Agreed. I think they would leave out the webcam bit but I think otherwise it wouldn’t be that much of an issue.
@@JoBloOriginals True the webcam bit was out there, even for the time.
My man, that just isn't true because Hollywood listens to these woke losers for whatever reason and even people like Seth Rogan sold out by saying that he regrets some of his early comedy movies.
Hope they make more. Reunion was perfect.
Hopefully with the next movie, Jim has the “Dad” role that would be perfect ;)
The next movie will be woke trash going by the female writer.
That plot twist at the end was one hell of a curve ball.
they gotta make a funeral movie next
Having been 16 when this came out, I loved watching the characters grow and mirror some of my own life experiences
For many of us who watched these movies, especially as they were released in 99 and the 00s, we aren't going to care if the movie is perceived homophobic or misogynistic by a random few because we understand jokes and humor!
That's back when America could still laugh at itself. As much as I don't like the Bush years, they were still far better than the Obama years.
The problem is that Hollywood listens to these woke losers and lefty special interest groups. RDJ has even said that Tropic Thunder wouldn't get made today and that is only 15 years old.
i love the series , but in the first movie a underage girl was filme without her consent and she was expelled from school not the guy who did it
@@gabrielmenezes2761 She was 18 but putting that aside, of course that would be wrong in real life. People use to understand that comedy can be hilarious and messed up at the same time. Why is it that woke liberals are so cool with John Wick killing 67 people a movie but a politically incorrect joke is what makes them so butthurt.
John wick only kills other assassins
Rewatched the second movie a couple months ago, since it was the one I hadn't watched for a long time, and I don't know if it is because I'm a college student now, but it went right in the feels. And that's the thing about the original movies: no matter the absurd situations, you can relate to the gang and to the struggles of time passing by, getting more mature and going your own separate ways, because we all are going to go ahead with our lives, but the good ( and bad ) memories from the past will always be a part of us. We can't live in the past, but we can always be grateful that it happened, and we will cherish the ones that were a part of that past.
The Naked Mile and Beta House follow the same 2 Stifflers, in Naked Mile I'm pretty sure the main character is still in High School and visits the Stiffler already in college, then the following year he goes to that same college and pledges at the Frat where the older Stiffler is a member. It's been quite some time since I've seen either so I may be mistaken though.
This has a special place in my heart, it almost mirrors my life when I graduated in High School in 2006, College in 2010 and got married in 2013. It is a solid time capsule of every happy moments in my life before the society becomes insane with Technology, The Internet and Socialmedia. With all that drama... My ranking is simple... 1 > Reunion > Wedding > 2. Thanks JoBlo, you made me smile again... =)
As a person who is the same age as the characters (graduate of 1999), the movies really resonated with me. There are so really funny cameos from actors who were fairly unknown at the time, but grew to much more success later on! I even owned the entire anthology on DVDs! All of the stories have a lot of heart behind the mildly offensive cracks.
Personally rank them
1. American Pie 2
2. American Pie
3. American Reunion
4. American Wedding
5. Beta House
6. Naked Mile
7. Band Camp
8. Girls Rules
9. Book of Love
1. American Pie 2 (the best by far)
2. American Pie
3. American Pie Reunion
4. American Wedding
I love this film franchise and just did a binge of it this week. It's a comfort movie for me since I graduated in 1998. A lot of great teen movies from that era. I would like to see one more movie like a Hangover style in Vegas.
I think what really sets American Pie apart from other teen sex comedies is that it has an emotional core. It always feels light and fun, never mean-spirited. The way that the sex scenes were shot at the end with Kevin and Vicky or Oz and Heather is surprisingly deep and mature. This is, of course, hilariously juxtaposed with Jim being taken advantage of by Michelle. Pure comedy gold!
Class of 2001. I don't care how much hate these movies get, they are classics to me as perfect fit for my time. The original 4 movies just seemed to be close enough in my life to always be relevant. I think you were too hard on Reunion. I thought it was really well done and evolved with the series. Honestly it was one of my favorites besides #2, having grown up and had a kid at the time.
The dance off is my bid for my favorite scene across all the movies. My favorite has got to be the original, because without that one there would be no other ones.
Mines to
Jim's dad will forever be LEGENDARY
Just like Stiffler's Mom
Shocked to learn January Jones was in American Wedding … MRS DRAPER
The movies aged just fine, stop the virtue signaling 🙄
Fucking facts!!
I just had this convo with two female friends who agree. It wasn't made for kids today. It was made for us, back then, and it's ours to enjoy, as a snapshot of highschool in the late 90s and early 2000s.
@@hey_you Yeah, it’s definitely a snapshot of that time period but, I graduated HighSchool in 2012 and still remembering all the themes were still relevant when me and my friends watched it for the first time.
To exclude homophobic/racist/insensitive/inappropriate characters would suggest these people don’t exist, which is unrealistic. I agree, they aged just fine.
I kind of took it as he (the narrator) has grown and matured, so it doesn't appeal as much as it once did.
They were perfect then and they are perfect now. Watching these films again is like hanging out with old friends.
Legit, my favorite thing in the whole series is the cast Commentaries for the second and third film. They are all clearly friends and spend the whole time riffing on each other. Never laughed so hard in my life!
Todd Philipps, you know the director of the billion dollar hit Joker (2019), what was his debut? An American Pie esque movie called Roadtrip (2000) costarring Seann William Scott!
Ryan Reynolds, probably one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood in the past 5 years with hits like Deadpool (2016). What is said to be his big breakthrough movie? An American Pie esque movie called National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002) costarring Tara Reid! Also, Aaron Paul is in that movie by the way!
John Cho, actually in the 4 main American Pie movies, went on to have the biggest most consistent career out of all of them (at least movie wise for sure).
American Pie and Van Wilder led to Harold & Kumar (2004) which brought Neil Patrick Harris to the spotlight again!
How does the internet thank these movies? MAYBE one or two reactions about the first movie, the second if we're lucky. Only one channel did a reaction to all 4 main movies. As far as I know there's only one channel which did a deep dive through the whole franchise including direct to dvd spin offs with individual reviews and separate ranking. And then short ranking videos.
Why? Why are people not willing to go through all the movies even though they enjoy the movies they did a reaction or review for.
Sorry but as a big fan of this franchise this always bothered me and I have to bring it up again. Maybe this video will help gaining more recognition for the franchise, not just the first movie. But I doubt it. Also, American Reunion (2012) is actually NOT a movie I would put above all of the direct to dvd spin offs. American Pie presents: Band Camp (2005) and American Pie presents: The Book of Love (2009) I would put above, I enjoyed those 2 movies MORE, especially Band Camp!
Saying John Cho was one of the funny parts of Reunion without mentioning the best parts of both him acknowledging his falling out with “other” MILF guy and subsequent tear jerker reunion at the end when Stifler hooks up with Finch’s mom played by the much hotter Rebecca De Mornay 😜
Stiffler reminds me of a guy i was good friends with growing up. He'd probably hooked up with 20 something chicks by the time i lost my virginity at 17. I was real shy around women when i was a teenager and he was the complete opposite. Whats odd is when he was in his early 20s he met a nurse and got married and they have 2 kids now. He became one of the best family men i know. We literally were friends since kindergarten. Funny how we often turn out so different than we started out.
Afraid to say I have just as much nostalgia for these sill sex comedies as I do classics like ET and Indiana Jones. They were just made for me at the time!
The main four American Pie movies are the best but I also really like Beta House. The main Stifler character that's already in college has a kind of Van Wilder quality to him and the story is kind of a reverse of Revenge of the Nerds in which the nerds are the bullies and the cool kids are the victims. I find it very funny and just a really good time every time I watch it.
When this movie came out, I was in high school. Me and my friends talked about it incessantly, referencing certain scenes and it was where all of us learn what the word "milf" meant. What great memories.
I kind of like Band Camp, Stifler's brother changes into a good guy. I also like movies that take place at camp for some reason.
Wish Oz was in wedding because it's one of the best in the series other than missing characters
I was gonna add the elephant in the room that he wasn’t part of that movie. They also didn’t have Mena Suvari or Tara Reid, although being that neither Heather/Oz or Vicky/Kevin were still together I could see the exclusion of the girls, but not one of Jim’s best friends.
@@NotMeNaNaNa Also Sherman showed up for one of the spinoffs but not wedding???
@@mylo3153 he was in 2 and his Shermanator line actually works on Nadia. He wasn’t one of Jim’s friends so he didn’t belong in wedding, but then again, neither were the MILF guys who ended up being ushers so maybe Sherman could’ve been the photographer or DJ.
@@NotMeNaNaNa What could've been 😅
The first four American Pie movies are awesome, with wedding my favorite. Aside from bandcamp, the spin-offs for unwatchable.
Speak for urself
Painful irony of it all is that as a teen, you are trying to have sex. Then you get married, have a couple kids, and realize you never have sex.
I graduated in 2000. I remember seeing the first one in the movie theater and loved it. It was close to high school in those times. I can and have rewatch the original four anytime.
I got a surprise? Lol
These movies are awesome.
They aged fine, listen to more Cumtown for even more hilarious offensive comedy.
One of the greatest cult classics of all time.
This was perfect and so well done
This movie ruined my sexual confidence until my thirties 😂
I have all nine American Pie movies on DVD, the main four are my favorites but I did enjoy the spin offs. I am looking forward to the 5th one to the original four.
Only saw the first 3. Often take the first one off the shelves to re-watch but I felt, and still feel, they'd said all they had to say by the closing credits of that first one. Might give Reunion a run through but the skippables will remain skipped.
I watched the main series for the first time a few months back, so I don't have the same nostagia as most people but I generally agree with your take. The first one is a good coming of age story on top being a funny sex comedy. The sequals feel more like generic sex comedies, even if they are done well for the most part. That said, I would recommend watching Reunion. Its interesting seeing the story come to an end with the group completely grown up and living seperate lives, even if the film can kinda feel like a retread of the earlier films.
1. American pie, 2. American Wedding 3. American Reunion 4. American pie 2. That’s my order.
God...looking at the scenes from the first American Pie, it really brings back memories. I was 15 in 1999 and at the time i was living in Kuwait, (I'm European) and it absolutely blew everyone's mind, we knew it by heart. And no, there's no way that would've been in the cinema, that's what VHS was for :)
Funny this just came out. Me and friend binge watched and ranked the og 4 last week!
It's super nostalgic for me because they filmed at my high school (Milliken High in Long Beach), having graduated just 3 years before the first movie came out. Loved it.
Trying to rank the 4 mains was more painful than I had anticipated but for me it's Wedding, AP 2, AP 1, And Reunion but they're all classics.
Naked Mile was the best spinoff. Even got a 2nd story
Beta house is brilliant as well
I considered band camp apart of the main 4 imho
Same. I was still in high school when I first watched it in I think 2006 at a movie date night at my at the time girlfriends house.
Just rewatched the first 4 recently too!
Stiffler isn't a bus driver. He's a coach at the High School so he has access to and borrowed the bus the lacrosse/football team takes to away games.
Lots of movies from the 80s make way for American pie and I think the movie mischief from the year 1985 started it all,
So many great 80’s movies paved the way in this genre. Fraternity Vacation, Private Resort. Spring Break, Porky’s etc…
@@mcsmoothie7052 exactly like I grew up watching Conan the barbarian ,a sure thing ,mischief ,who's that gir,l splash, mannequin
Went to University with a guy from the town the movies were set and he said 'there are way too many guys like Stifler around there.' So I guess that explains all the spin-off ones.
20 years old, me and all my mates love these movies. They have aged fantastically and young men love them just the same.
American Wedding is the best one in my opinion. Ranked in order:
1 American Wedding
2 American Pie
3 American Pie 2
4 American Reunion
Reunion is my fav of them all. Before that - for years - The second was the best imo ❤ hope the new one will live up to the legacy😊
All 4 main movies go in order by rank
Maybe 2 over 1 depending on the mood but this is one of the best comedy franchises
I loved these movies. The National Lampoon of my generation. I was 12 years old when the original came out and i remember i never laughed so hard before it came out. As i got older, the other movies came out. The american pie movies really inspired my generation, the way we partied, and the way we interacted with each other. I miss being a teenager and just having a great time. I used to want to be an adult so bad.. now i just want to be a teenager again.
*This movie was amazing. I hope they will make more*
Jennifer Coolidge has been consistently funny for decades! Just watch any of the Chris Guest Mockumentaries, or 'Austin Powers'! (also, there's one question that still bears asking; how the HELL do you stick your thing in a fresh pie, and NOT suffer 3rd-degree burns?!) XD
Those 4 are great. Classics
Band camp is so slept on. One of the funniest of the franchise

2)American Reunion
3)American Wedding
4)American Pie 2
1. Wedding
2. Pie 2
3. Reunion
4. Pie (o.g.)
5. Band Camp
6. Book of Love
7. Naked Mile
8. Beta House
9. Girls' Rules
"I'M THE PIE FAWKER!"

This movie is so nostalgic. It’s such a perfect encapsulation of how good the 90’s were. Not like today where the trend is toxic gaslighting and racism.
As someone fresh out of high school, I feel like these films are better appreciated when you're a teen in high school
I remember watching Porky's 1 & 2 as 80's teen. The "isms" flew over my head bc of horny teenager me but re-watching them now at 50 I could barely get thru them.
My ranking:
1. Original
2. Reunion
3. The 2nd one
4. Wedding (it's by far the worst imo)
After seeing fear and loathing in Las Vegas, My older brother told me get some good weed and watch these movies next
Sounds like he wouldn't steer you wrong
Great Video!
Stiffler passing out, still as hilarious.
I still don't even understand the point of having Kevin in American Wedding. He had no story arc at all if I remember correctly. All that was memorable to me was him being strapped to the chair at the bachelor party.
i mean we learned he had a new girlfriend and was in law school
@@krist0pher459 Yeah, there is that.
Always loved these movies..the first one came out right when I was in the middle of high school and it was like our documentary lol ...part 2 was the best one IMO..just everything on there was hilarious and quotable..to this day I mention the rule of 3s haha ... American Wedding is completely skippable..I always skip it and go straight to American reunion...the way they tried to shoehorn Stifler into the main character and make him change his whole personality just killed it for me ..plus no OZ just didn't feel right.. Reunion is a solid movie tho...my advice is Skip Wedding you won't be missing anything.. trust me lol
I know You already did do Seann W. Scott, but You should do a WTF happened to the cast of American Pie.
Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas rarely do much and Mena Suvari & Tara Reid make questionable films
Very consistent comedy franchise my favorite scene definitely is the dance off with Stifler and Bear in the gay club
I loved that scene
Did anyone knew that singer & song writer Don McLean sued Universal Studio for taking the title "American Pie" & turned it into a teen film, but also for the fact he wasn't properly looked after.
I love all of them, the first 4 are the best but the spin offs are very good
I was a junior in high school, but had turned 17 at the time this film hit theaters. The local rundown multiplex near my house had a sneak peek, and I got a ticket for me and my 16-year-old bud. We laughed our asses off, and knew it would be a hit, once it had a wide release. I enjoy the first one the best, but the second and fourth American Pie are also worth a watch. No thanks on the Wedding one.
Jims dad is the GOAT.
I love all of the main movies
Haven't seen these for while but love the first 4
A PC American Pie movie would absolutely suck
I loved all the those that showed the dad was that dude fr like betta house and book of luv😂😂❤
For me it was the first 4 that really got me. All the other ones band camp just felt like it had nothing to do the first 4 at all. Naked mile and beta house felt more like spin offs to the franchise and just were there own movies. Still like some of the jokes in naked mile. The book of love I hated it just felt to much like a remake of the first movie. And just felt washed up and everything we had all ready seen. This new one I have not seen but it looks terrible. I strongly do hope they make a fifth movie.
Love the real/original 4. Never did the straight to videos.
Totally my generation. The non-PC stuff doesn't bother me, gotta be honest.
I remember American Pie 2 being funny as hell, but i don't really remember 1&2 that much, except for the livestream of Jim and Nadia which was pretty iconic at the time!
How you gonna review these movies that are nostalgic to most of us that were raised in a time that people weren’t so offended by everything? Trying to appeal to the new generation by saying it didn’t age well dont sit well with me lol it aged just fine
To be fair trying to find a way to bring them all back for the second movie they said was a problem in the script writing stage. It’s probably why most didn’t return for the 3rd movie and many only had cameos in Reunion.
Oz was meant to be at the wedding but Chris Klein was only available to shoot a cameo due to working in London at the time. But the producers cut the part before it was shot. All they shot was a brief scene during the engagement party were Jim said Oz who was overseas at the time said he would fly out for the wedding (1-3 collectors DVD box set bonus disc covering fan FAQ’s.) He was ok with it cause that DVD had him with the other guys, producers and the actress who played Michelle’s sister having dinner after production wrapped.
Can you guys please do a video like this for Van Wilder and/or The Girl Next Door?
I disagree with you, I hope the new movies have even more offensive and misogynistic content in them. You can’t have American Pie without going full American and offending everyone. The PC shit has to die, it’s so damn annoying and toxic. Bring back shaming and being offensively funny
I like the spinoffs not as much as the main line but i still get a good laugh from them
Well done, Mr Blo!
Does anyone know the name of the first song?
Easy ranking : 1, 2 and Reunion. Rest is not worth your time... Although, I would even place the band camp before wedding... This one is above the rest of the spinoffs, but not good as the previous one, due essentially to the absence of Oz, the proeminence of Stifler and lack of brotherhood spirit from the two first episodes.
Theyve actually aged perfectly
what a great movies if they can do it right wouldn't mine a reboot
Ranking (from best to worst)
Reunion
Original
AP2
The Wedding
Unpopular opinion I really like Beta House, its the death rattle on a genre for a genre for sure. its not amazing but I thought it was fun/fine
10:20 it was also the weakest plotline of the film 😂😂
If American pie goes PC with the new movie it’s gonna suck
I don’t understand all these people who call him shit when we’ve barely seen him play
I can't actually rank the first 4 because i treat then like a story and all 4 have their charm. Now I need to binge watch them
A classic and the most famous Teen movie franchise of all time!
