In this video I take a closer look at the Abyss Watchers. I try to uncover their backstory, motives and eventual downfall along with other related stories such as Atrorias and High Lord Wolnir.
Special Thanks to Briareos Kerensky for letting me use his Artorias clip in my video, check out his channel at: / @briareoskerensky - Hry
I see Dark souls 3 lore, I think that’s pretty cool. I read the comments, pretty cool. I click on the channel to see more videos, which I expect will probably be more Dark Souls videos. And what do I see? VRchat anime boobs for miles. Such a shame that one of our lore keepers fell to the abyss.

MrDeath5300 even some strong people always fall so deep into it. Gives a new definition of abyss watcher haha
The ember has turned to ash
You shoulda seen that coming based on the pfp
Has anyone noticed that abyss watchers helms are the same shape as a wolfs tooth?
BVRZERK It looks more like Ciaran's helm to me.
All I’ve noticed is that they look amazing
Pointy hats
Did you know that if you beat Wolnir by reducing his hp to zero, without breaking his last bracelet, he has a different death animation? He just disintegrates instead of being dragged into the Abyss.
I didn't actually , but how do you reduce his hp without breaking his last bracelet?
Break two of his bracelets, than target his head with magic and arrows.
It takes a really long time and doesn't give any special rewards besides the altered death animation, and a sense of accomplishment.
did you know if you beat Sir Allone without taking damage he commits seppuku to keep his honor
I knew about it, but I've never managed to pull it off myself.
That’s too merciful of a fate for him. Let him rot in the abyss
Vaati didn't provide me an in-depth video lore of the Abyss Watchers but you did so thank you very much for it.
Thank you for providing me with a history lesson from my favorite boss
The series may have ended but May the embers forever burn in our hearts for eternity.
I expect there to be more in the soulsborne franchise some day
@@punkdee3457 this aged well lol Elden Ring is basically Dark Souls 4
@@TheTvar21uh nah it's before darksouls so it's a prequel
@@woKenVFXdoesn’t necessarily specify that
@@woKenVFXdoesn’t necessarily specify that
There is a way to trigger a different death animation, if you attack wolnir"s head or use anti spook to get behind him you can kill him without destroying the bracelets. Also the area you fight wolnir has limited space. Either from was lazy or that area could be some kind of gateway to the abyss
Idk anything but that symbol above the door looks like artorias' shield upside down
I've seen that symbol above the door on a armor set
I feel it’s like you said “watchers” I feel like they kept the balance they accepted that the abyss was unstoppable but kept the abyss from becoming out of control as maybe some might see to further spread it and they stepped in to stop it as they spotted a kingdom with it they would bury it to keep it from further spreading so it feels like it was more about controlling the abyss the best they could
Good job with the actual footage aswell. Really really helped show what you were talking about in a fun cinematic way
Has anyone noticed!... That the fire link shrine song has a striking resemblence to the abyss watchers theme? It's pretty cool actually
Nice lore vid Snow, as for the symbol you mentioned...I have a feeling that it's referring to the Bed of Chaos since the Ruins are under Carthus...or possibly the Old Chaos area in Dark Souls 2 where we fight the Ivory King, all we see down there are it's roots when we look upwards and the lower part under the symbol...kind of looks like a gate...like the one that rises up when the Ivory King comes into the stage. As for the end...Legacy of the Wold indeed...yet they shall never know the truth. Hehehehehehe...
The Abysswatchers attack each other because theyre hollow AND consumed or at least a bit influenced by the abyss...why ? Look at the cape of their armor...that black root likr is the abyss...also theyre attacking or trying to kill every sign of abyss...so they attack each other...
Nacou berry I wish the red eyes switched because it’s really messed up when you realize that the insane one, is helping you.
the emblem above the door in wolnir's tomb could possibly be a depiction of the bed of chaos. I don't know why it'd be there except for the fact that smouldering lake and the demon ruins are right under the catacombs, but that's it.
I was expecting this to be good, but you did an AMAZING job. Also I agree with a previous comment (ayy lmao), I think the symbol is that of the bed of chaos as well (or something resembling) as it seems like it's too much of a coincidence to be something else, what with the smoldering lake (ash lake) and the demon ruins (lost izalith) being right below.
Thanks I appreciate it. Ya I can see that and as it happens I think my next video will be on the Demon Ruins.
Can't wait! That was one of my most favorite areas in DS1.
That tree symbol is also on the Spirit Tree Crest Shield.
This channel needs its own abyss watchers.
Your lore series of Dark Soul are the greatest bed time story ever !
:>
imma write it down and actually read it to the kids ha ha
CrazyGrim09 I'm watching this as I'm going to bed!
Good job bro, the Abyss Watchers are by far one of my favorite characters in the entire series, and seeing this lore enhanced what I already knew, thanks for all the amazing info!
Great stuff man.
thanks!
I always understood that there are 1 of 2 reasons that farron keep was placed on top of carthus, or that both are right:
1)the abyss watchers already killed wolnir and collapsed his empire on account of him being in touch with the abyss, and they are brought back together as its part of their legacy just as the rest of farron keep is (the flame conjoined their biggest landmark and their biggest achievement) as the lands had started converging
2)since the lands were converging, many areas that had shared themes, architecture, or history got mashed together categorically in a way that everything is in its own area. This is also seen with anor londo getting mashed with eleum loyce, irithyll, and profaned capital. These are all places that not only are capital cities of religious worship, they all have various pieces cut in and out and shuffled across the map. Like eleum loyce as a city should be where farron keep is, because underneath carthus, which is underneath farron keep, is the bed of chaos, which should be underneath eleum loyce, but it isn’t, unless you factor that into it being attached to irithyll. And guess what? Lothric castle has parts of drangleic, which are also in the profaned capital, because it’s all collapsing in on itself in a way that makes sense to the bonfire
Wasn't that tree on the crest that you used to get to that shortcut to sif in the first gamr
i came to watch this again and maybe its the great hollow from ds1
I’m pretty sure that symbol just means that there is a bridge leading to ithyil of the boreal valley given that there is a tree immediately when you get there
I have two theories one is that the wolf blood that they drink to become an abyss watcher might be related to sif and the other theory i have is about the cutscene we see when first see the abyss watchers when one of them is killing the other one it could be that in order for the fire to be rekindled all of the undead legion as whole must sacrifice themselves but some of them due to one reason like the corruption or some other reason didn’t want to do that so one of them(the one we actually fight) in order to rekindle the fire starts killing the other ones and when we arrive he was just about finished and this is the part where my theory kinda falls flat cause if he wanted to sacrifice himself when he sees us coming he should probably know why we are here and shouldn’t attack us, but one way of explaining this could be that since we did become a abyss watcher ourselves by part taking in the ceremony to get there he sees us as a threat and attacks us. And one more thing is that if we part take in the ceremony and also drink the wolf blood then why doesn’t the corruption effect us?
I fucking love this game.
oh cool ds3 lore video I wonder if he has mo-
:(
Yeah what the heck is he posting now lol
I bet the upside down tree is showing y the swamp has the festering trees. Kinda like the abyss has corrupt the soul of the land n the tree upside-down is like its roots. Something like that atleast lol. It would take alot of typing.
That symbol is on lothric armor sets and shields I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that but idk
Now this is epic
I died to you a lot today, but I beat you
@@dimitriosgladio059 Died 4 times with a sorcery build, but beat him too just now. Onto the catacombs!
@@cjgreen4331 nice! Catacombs are tedious but have a very easy boss
@@dimitriosgladio059 OH GOD, RATS AND FLAMING ARROWS AND THE SKELETONS JUST INFINITELY REASSEMBLE, IS THERE EVEN A BONFIRE?!
It was tedious as you said, took around 2h. Not difficult, but tedious
@@cjgreen4331 yep, very tedious. The bonfire is in the middle of the area. I finally said screw it and just dodged everything and ran to the bonfire. I honestly forget what is after catacombs but it gets significantly more difficult.
I really enjoyed the video, but I must say that one of the most overlooked aspects of the abyss watchers is that their soul can transpose the actual abyss greatsword from ds1. Not Sif’s two versions but the actual greatsword of Artorias. Thus the soul of these undead individuals is lITERALLY one or the actual wolf blood master (Artorias). Which this was my fav. Part of their boss fight because their moves reflect his swift and elegant but dangerous dance and skill with a greatsword. It was a nice homage from fromsoft. Now, how their souls can be linked through the substance know as blood? Idk man. But I would absolutely lOVE to see you do a theory video on it one day :))) +sub
upside down tree is the Qlipboth (might have said it wrong)
The three farrons. I thought they were just three random flames had no idea they were dark souls lore lol
12:59 The upside down tree or "roots" Is an Occultic symbol usualy accompanied with the trunk and branches to compliment it. This i eather just the roots "bottom" Or the branches but flipped (ie) reality. Relates to the saying"As above so below" In many Pegan beleifes. I beleive In this game They represent Eather the abyss itself that or the Dark soul in humanity. the same dark soul that led that dude to being consumed by the abyss. So thats why the Curse was spread upon the land. Because few beleived the rebirth of the flames was Useless. inevitable. That is why The the symbol showes the roots. The "Son of man" As described in the bible has been understood by some as The Apocolypse.
To add I do beleive the Curse was relevant to the prolonged age of fire that gwyn was obsessed with.
When soul of cinder goes for that sweet carthus rage. Lol
So if you take away his bracelets, troll Wilbur, he gets taken back into dark again.
So if I’m understanding this right (someone correct me if I’m wrong please)
The abyss watchers fought against the abyss until it consumed them?
No they became lords of cinder and became like the other former lords of cinder after linking the fire. Whatever that means
Wait holy shit I didn’t know snow did dark souls lore
It would’ve been cool if we could consume the wolf blood
The abyss watchers is a nod at Bloodborne. The high collar and dual weilded weapons, as well as the blood drinking are all clues.
Good catch
Why do they abyss watchers kill eachother though ?
Training, or they're simply mad as fuck !
they are also corrupted by the abyss, the remnant of their spirit carry on their original mission
They are trying to free each other of life
Your all wrong they all see the abyss in echother and they kill there friends so they can free them from the abyss but the abyss is reviving them every time they die and they repeat the cycle
They got tainted by the abyss
Abyss watchers have to destroy the abyss
They have to kill each other
But they’re undead(I think)
They come back
They have to be killed again
Rinse and repeat infinite times
Until someone kills all the wolves blood(i think) and breaks the cycle
Then they truly die
wait... what happens if you kill him with the wolf knight's greatsword?
Him being wolnir.
Another thing, awesome video!
As far as I can tell nothing, I beat him with the Farron Greatsword this playthrough. The scene of Artorias stabbing the goblet is just me screwing around trying to get some cool shots for the video.
+SNOW SOS aww, would have been cool if fromsoft had a different death animation seeing as the description says it's deadlier to creations of the abyss.
Hunhunakar It has an ingame effect where it does more damage to something like dark wraiths and etc. but that's all.
cool
tree thing is either gondor or elden ring
Upside-down tree.
Could be linked to Elden Ring.
I do have a question though. Why did your character killing them, make them stop rising? They seemed to be this unending legion, yet you kill 1 and it ends? Is it that they are not "endless" so much as, they are just so many in numbers, and even after all this time, these are the last 2 or 3 left? In which we actually see the last abyss watcher fall, only to revive with the essence of its fellow watchers. Did it rise because you entered right at that time? Meaning you were a possible threat and this was the watchers throwing there last little bit of power at you to try and defeat you?
This part always confused me a little, so any light that can be shown on this would be appreciated :). Love Atrorias and the Abyss watchers being almost a legacy of him is so cool too me.
I think it’s like a hive mind, with the one in the second phase being the core.
The carthus werent talented pyromancers, they had a rudimentary and practical use of them. Carthus flame arc, carthus beacon, not alot of faith or intellect required.
they used simple but practical pyromancies.
I think the upside down tree refers to what the Abyss represents. In the Lake of Ash we see that gigantic trees hold up many different worlds. The upside down tree simply means the end of all worlds.
1.25x speed is much better
second then
I really wanted some simple English here.
