    Just a quick note on the AIM-7, specifically the AIM-7MP: Most people seem to be very quick to dismiss them out of hand, but they are a very useful tool if used correctly. The -7MP has a longer sustainer burn time than the -120 and much larger aero-surfaces. This allows it to fair much better against a manoeuvring target from just within visual range to ACM range. It doesn't have the absolute range of a -120, but in close, it is a much better choice. As such I personally carry one on each belly station whenever I'm expecting to go into ACM. The idea that the AMRAAM is simply a *better* weapon is a fallacy.

      @DriveFast_FlyHigh Před 5 lety +6

      It's not just about the kinematic performance of the missile, it's about being able to avoid the one that is coming back at you. The AMRAAM allows you to increase Pk and survivability by getting closer before shooting since you can go defensive immediately after firing while with the AIM-7 or R27 you have to support the missile until impact.

    • @owouwu9032
      @owouwu9032 Před rokem +2

      But but much maneuvering *proceeds to shoot an amraam at that range and then turn cold and run away without needing to support a SARH missile*

    • @a_stone
      @a_stone Před 11 měsíci

      @@owouwu9032 I wonder, with drones and stuff, if we'll see a return of SARH missiles or a mix or SARH and ARH with one aircraft getting close and firing the missile but someone else painting the target, like a drone that's tied with the aircraft firing the missile but in a completely different position.

    Obvious but worth pointing out, the radar scan here is set to 140 degrees, which give the 70 degree maximum offset whilst retaining lock. So the crank angle is dependent upon the capability of the radar? Once locked does the F18 track up to 70 degrees IRRESPECTIVE of the scan width setting of the radar at lock? (e.g. I if lock with a scan with 0f 20 degrees for minimising the scan time /most accurate tracking can I still crank to 70 degrees once locked?)

    • @scarletlightning565
      @scarletlightning565 Před 5 lety +2

      Yes. The B-Scope azimuth scan angle only sets the FOV of search mode. Once a lock is made you have full use of the max FOV. Other planes have different scan angles and other variables e.g. the Flankers can slew their entire radar to the left or right to point the centre of the search FOV some 30 to 45 degrees off aircraft centerline. That would allow them a much higher crank angle.

    What about shooting straight on from farther away (give the bandit something to deal with), then crank supporting the missile until PITBULL, then reasses if you want to recommit and shoot another one or bug in the opposite decision, ask for picture to see how your missiles did and again, reasses if you want to recommit and leave. If you want to be really aggressive and banzai the guy to get real close with high pk, why not go for a full on notch instead?

    • @scarletlightning565
      @scarletlightning565 Před 5 lety +1

      All perfectly acceptable tactics there. Notching is a defensive move different from cranking though. Notching is putting a hostile radar perfectly perpendicular to your own heading to defeat the pulse doppler scan. It is a high risk, high reward move as when done properly, it gives the same result as turning cold but keeps you in a more favourable position. However, if you mess it up, you will still be in danger. That's why the safest option is always to turn fully cold and perhaps add more defence by dropping altitude and making semi-lazy S-turns to bleed energy from any missiles coming your way.

    • @Goreuncle
      @Goreuncle Před 4 lety +2

      You can climb to 40+k (assuming that the jf-17 isn't doing the same) and launch your amraam in TWS when you're within 20 nm, then turn around and dive at full speed, while chaffing.
      Safest defense against the sd-10 is to run away, but it must be done before getting within 15nm of the jf-17.

    • @Goreuncle
      @Goreuncle Před 4 lety +3

      @@grimreapers
      There are other weak points, this isn't the only one.
      For instance, this will only work against AI or newbies who don't know how to defend/anticipate TWS shots.
      Any experienced player will fox 3 (or fox 2 if it's a flanker) and turn, won't keep foolishly flying towards you.
      Hornet lacks top speed and acceleration, it can't catch running fulcrums/flankers/eagles/tomcats/vipers/mirages... and can barely catch jf-17s
      Also, amraams don't have enough energy to reach cold bandits beyond 3-6 miles (depending on altitude and speed), many people know these things, they won't fall for it.
      Besides, if they're flying tomcat or jf-17, you'll likely get hit soon after launching your amraam (if not sooner), getting that close when facing such opposition is a bad idea.

      Good tactic but I find a lot of online human players who see when you are going hot on them after the crank and fire a second missile. And I would be very interested to see a fight with equal weapons (here we have a Fox1vsFox3 fight and if the Flanker had Fox3 and fire a second just before Cap goes hot, not sure he could have escaped it).
      But this technique works great against AI.

    • @GG-ck3kg
      @GG-ck3kg Před 5 lety +2

      The F-Pole is the distance between the shooter aircraft and the target aircraft at the time of missile impact.
      The F-Pole is NOTHING else. It doesn't include cranks, splits, or anything else. It is not a maneuver, it is a measurement.
      You crank or otherwise maneuver in order to increase the opponent's F-Pole, I.e. their missile flies a longer path.
      The idea of cranking presented here is gamey I guess. You shoot, THEN crank to gimbals in order to give your missile support and increase opponent's F-Pole. But here we're doing this in order to drive into an opponent's WEZ, shoot and escape. Not terribly tactical but whatever works.

    • @DriveFast_FlyHigh
      @DriveFast_FlyHigh Před 5 lety

      @@GG-ck3kg Good point. This is really just gaming the AI and/or a weak opponent by getting them to waste missiles before they have a realistic chance of killing you. A smart opponent is not going to shoot from 17+ miles when you are cranked 60-70 degrees.
