- Learn how to complete a DIY Stair Remodel on a Budget with this step-by-step instructional video! When I bought my home, the basement stairs were covered with nasty carpet. After removing the carpet, I was left with a bare staircase that was in need of some serious DIY remodeling. In order to save money, I transformed the stairs using budget friendly tools and materials that you can pick up from any big box store. This video will show you how to prepare the old staircase for new stair treads, nosings, and risers in a DIY step-by-step manner.

It definitely started as a dumpster fire 🗑🔥after the initial staining - but I think I was able to salvage the job with the gel stain. Let me know what you think of the final result and THANKS FOR WATCHING!
I’m going to be doing the same thing really soon in a house I bought as well. Not just the stairs, but ripping out the glorious maroon carpet and the Christmas green carpet in the living room and main bedroom. Can’t wait!!!

Just a tip I received from an old woodworker. Do not wipe extra glue off. It put into the grain outside of seam. Leave it and sand it off when dry he says.

This was very helpful! I ripped off my carpet started chopping off the edges and was struggling to get the end pieces off. I have 10 stairs that are pretty similar to yours but didnt have any idea how to do bullnose even though I own a router!. watching your video helped to make me feel more comfortable to try it out on my own.

Beautiful job! Lots of work though. After I finished my stair remodel using red oak treads and MDF risers, they were beautiful but way too slippery to walk on, so I had to buy some tacky rubber and cut for treads.

Long time - No see! That staircase looks great. Regarding the screw comment you made, screws are what one uses to screw up a carpet installation! Your diligence has paid off. I didn't realize wood like oak was still rare up there; but the pine will work especially with the unique treatment of stain and poly, considering your costs. I hope that by now, a year after the work you will return that beautiful battery powered nailer to your BIL; if you haven't, I would include a gallon of fresh oysters or some great crabs along with the return. Start saving your pennies or hinting since Christmas is so near :). How much more footage of projects over the past year are pending? I don't remember seeing the basement rehab yet.I'll check your archives. Later.
Hey Patrick! I hear you on the screwed up carpet installation lol. And you will be glad to hear that the nailer has been returned haha But the Oysters might not be a bad idea either. They could have used the screws for the tack strip. Usually nails would be used though
generally speaking, when the threads stick past the stringer it looks bad. but for a 200$ looks much better.

Can you give us an update on how are the stairs holding so far?
So far so good! Only issue is that dropped something on one of the treads and it dented pretty bad. Other than that, I think they look pretty good 👍
@@AndrewThronImprovements You can try to put a wet paper towel on it and use an iron to steam it to raise it back up

U picked the wrong color
I would much rather put the stain and the polyurethane on before putting the risers and the runners on. Polyurethane takes 24 to 48 hours to dry.

Those are not stringers their called skirts
sooooo much glue and chaulking.... need less then half of all of that. Also for staples, use side cutters and twist.
I wondered about that as well, especially if the next owner wants to change something. Is the glue necessary at all, or would nails suffice?
No one uses a screw to hold down carpet people use tax stripping

Hi! The old “treads” were actually the 2”x6” lumber used for the original construction.

If you go with new treads over the old, you still have the work of cutting the front off the old, so there’s that.
Don't forget the 500+$ of tools needed for the job too
