Thanks Emil. This was a very comprehensive and informative video. One thing I might mention is that if you’re using any paint or ink in your airbrush you should use a mask or respirator. Even non toxic paints and inks can affect your respiratory system if inhaled. Especially if you have asthma or some other respiratory issue. I can attest to this first hand because I have respiratory failure. My lungs cannot absorb oxygen as well as normal or get rid of carbon dioxide. I got this because of particulate exposure. Trust me when I say you don’t want to mess with your respiratory system. Always use protection when dealing with fine particulates.

@@hav6301 I would recommend you use a respirator, one that has a carbon filter rated for chemical exposure. Normal face masks won’t protect against very small particles or gasses. Everytime you use glue, epoxy, cleaning chemicals or anything else that’s toxic you should wear it. If you 3D print with resin you should wear a respirator while handling resin. These particulates will build up in your lungs over time and destroy the lining of your lungs and your alveolar sacs slowly suffocating you. Also if you smoke consider giving up. I smoked for many years and it has not helped my health.

I agree, using a mask is best practice when atomizing anything in the air. I doubt you’ll get sick immediately, but years of airbrush use even with just acrylic paint could be detrimental to your health.

21:00 - Mixing paint. The best advice I have seen (especially for a beginner) is to mix outside the cup in a clean container until you know what you are doing (so you don't damage your airbrush) and the mix should be thin enough that when you drag it up the side of your container it flows back down the side straight away. It shouldn't sit on the side in a droplet. Use a brush or whatever you are using to mix with, coat it with the mixed thined paint and touch the side of your container briefly. If it runs straight down the side then you are good to go. If it sits there in a droplet, it could use a little more thinner.
Also, not sure if you mention it, but there are some good recipes out there for thinner and cleaner that are waaaaaay cheaper and worth looking at if you want an airbrush without spending tons.
This video is absolutely perfect. It's what I've always wanted to know as a beginner. I always got different and suggestions but this honestly gives me the simple things to follow and visuals.

1978 through 1992 I was a technical illustrator regularly using an airbrush to produce renderings or to retouch b&w photos, your video is an excellent educational resource, I’m absolutely fascinated by the new inks/paints ! I think I’ll get the airbrush back out and try them. (Haven’t used it in 30 years) Thanks for the inspiration.

Things as small as “make sure you put thinner into the airbrush prior to paint” will save you headache and troubleshooting
I got my HS Evolution about 15 years ago and I'm still using it. My husband got an HS Infinity last year. It's really a testament to the quality and design of the HS airbrushes that they're still going strong. My only real regret is spending several years learning how to use the airbrush myself because we didn't have these resources back then.
This video is very very helpful for beginners. I started airbrushing a few years ago and fell in love painting 3D printed mini figs, I do wish I saw this video at the beginning tho since it would prevent much mistakes I have made handling an airbrush. Now my old cheap ones has broken, I’m thinking of getting your Harder Steenbeck Evolution. I like the golden black finish a lot and I hope I could use it till dawn without it breaking!!!

Probably the most comprehensive air brushing video I’ve watched. I use an H&S Ultra for weathering and detailing my model railway and it’s a decent brush for not much money. Unfortunately, I’ve killed it through poor maintenance and rough handling of the needle / nozzle. I’ve learned some things from watching this so thanks for going in to so much detail. 👍

I get some people think acrylic paint is non-toxic, they are referring to the medium, but they are made from heavy metals and other stuff that isn't good for you, especially if you breathe it in. Wear a mask when you spray.
Some paint brands and colors can be, yes. But most modern acrylic are not that toxic.
@@SquidmarMiniatureswhen the bonding agents are still made of plastic you're essentially inhaling plastic dust that isn't good for you Even if it isn't as bad as inhaling heavy metals like lead or titanium. Is someone who has worked at this on the industrial and the military side of it it's not that expensive to go get a reusable respirator that you have to replace the filters every three months for $10. Willing to spend hundreds on paints the airbrush and the miniatures to paint yet not willing to throw $40 for the protective equipment you will need and then the $10 replacements every 3 months. It just doesn't make sense
Most modern paints (last 50 years) are made from organic compounds. The heavy metal paints are clearly listed and the bottles will tell you if it is airbrush safe for heavy metal toxicity. It is definitely recommended to wear a respirator and use a fume hood to ventilate and filter the particulates. If you have a air filter that can help reduce the level of particulates as well.
@@TheCoreus toxicity is only measured at the end of the brush. They don't take in account for inhalation. You shouldn't be breathing in paint medium or pigments.
@@bacawaka2813 if you want to be pendantic it's measured based on ingestion due to the micron size of particulates, which means it does not traditionally account for entering blood stream via vascular lining. Hence why the recommendation on bottles with heavy metals is explicitly not to airbrush them at all and is clearly stated in the ASTM and CE labels.
If your paint doesn't list ASTMs or list the pigments that's an entirely different problem and I wouldn't purchase said paint.
Also like I mentioned before use a mask, local air filtration, and fume hood if you can, I agree with your assessment.
Excellent video. I will be upgrading my cheap entry level airbrush to that of the Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024 beginner airbrush. Order placed! Also went ahead and ordered the quick disconnect adapters. Can't believe I waited this long to get those.
Very useful video. Getting a very cheap brush first is a big mistake as you never know if you are doing something wrong or if it is the brush. An Ultra is an ideal beginner brush as the seals won't degrade if you use anything other than water based. The Evo is great - love it. Have a few cheap brushes for specific jobs like gloss or metallic paints.

I've been through a few cheap $100 - $250 compressors since I've started in the hobby a few years ago. I bought a IS.875HT Smart Jet Plus Tubular Studio Compressor. This thing is amazing. It's not too loud. Is small, compact and never misses a beat. Not cheap, but not too expensive. Highly recommend it.

I nearly gave up on airbrushing after having bought a cheaper $50 range airbrush two years ago, but I was essentially fighting the tool and hating the experience.
I recently bought the basic Ultra instead of the squidmar version, (unfortunately the project I needed it for had to be finished last week, so I couldn't wait until these got delivered).
Still, I am not disappointed for giving it another try, and genuinely recommend these for anyone who, like me, is just starting out.
Never buy cheap painting tools.

An excellent and informative video.
A shop compressor with a tank works great. It is loud if running but if you fill up the tank early you won't need to run the pump at all as the amount of air in the tank will last all night. The quick connects for the hose are a must.

Great video. Only gripe is that I would always recommend using mask when the paint is atomized like airbrushing and spraycan painting. There are small particles you can breath in.
