The Temple stood alone amidst ruins, Main Temple fell in the year 1837 CE, while the middle & the entrance structures existed even today with its Architectural beauty and Glory made full of Laterite soil or Red soil. What ever the remnants still stood for more than 750 years at Konark is a Glorious architecture erected only with huge stones within 12 years of time by 1200 masons. Folklore is like this about the History of Konark temple. Though it is called as Temple yet no Delity is there because the main sanctum sanctorium fully destroyed in 1837. That main Structure had a huge magnet fixed at its top weighing a whooping 52 tons. Due to this magnet many European pirate ships got distracted due to compass needle showing wrong direction. Hence they avoid this sea route of Bay of Bengal and called this huge Temple structure as Black Pagoda. however the Temple is full of magnamity with stone curved Reliefs, Art work from the daily life of the then society. One interesting history which had been reveled after research that This Sun temple was built to calculate the Angular movement of the Sun for 24 hours. The concept is to harness the Time into a clock by observing the Sun's angular movements round the year. today we heard that there were seven horse at the Entrance structure which exist no more now represents the seven horses that drives the Sun's Chariot or the Seven days of a Week or the Seven rays of the Sun Light. There are 12 Giant wheels on each side of this Temple represents Twelve months of a Year and hence 24 Wheels represents two phases of The Moon in the form of Full Moon & New Moon. Eight spikes present in each Wheel represent one PRAHAR of time equivalent of 3 hours which means 8 Spikes X 3 hours = 24 hours a day. Many such scientific calculations which are well thought in 1250 points out that Indian Science calculations were very ancient before the clock is invented.
Dedicated to the Hindu Sun God Surya, what remains of the temple complex has the appearance of a 100-foot (30 m) high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone.. Once over 200 feet (61 m) high, much of the temple is now in ruins, in particular the large shikara tower over the sanctuary; at one time this rose much higher than the mandapa that remains. The structures and elements that have survived are famed for their intricate artwork, iconography, and themes, including erotic kama and mithuna scenes. Also called the Surya Devalaya, it is a classic illustration of the Odisha style of Architecture or Kalinga architecture. This temple was called the "Black Pagoda" in European sailor accounts as early as 1676 because it looked like a great tiered tower which appeared black.
