- The Cats were a pop group from Volendam. They were one of the most successful bands in the Netherlands from 1968 to 1975. The band’s original line up was Cees Veerman, Piet Veerman, Arnold Mühren, Jaap Schilder, Theo Klouwer and (from 1972 to 1975) Piet Keizer. They developed an original music sound that received the name ‘palingsound’ This style inspired many other Volendam artists, such as Maddog, Left Side, Next One and BZN.

The Cats were part of my youth. Radio Veronica, offshore radiostation near the Dutch coast was on 24 hours a day and thats where my parents started to like popmusic. Not the rough stuff, but The Cats were always played a bit louder. Eventhough my mum couldn't speak a word English, she sang along "Scarlet Ribbons" in her own shameless kinda funny way. No wonder Scarlet Ribbons was played on her funeral and now its me, turning the volume up everytime I hear this little gem. Thanks Cats! For being part of many peoples youth, througout their lives and during farewells.
This song is unique in the way this singer sings it. No cover can sound like him. Very special and heartfelt ❤
1969 , I was 7 years old , I grew up with this songs later on TopPop it was the only channel of pop music in the Netherlands and yes the best friend of my brother ( a Vollendammer ) is my first lover when a was 15 years , a crush of 3 years but whe still are friends he is 62 and I almost 61 never I forget the beautiful sound of the cats, dank jullie wel een eer om hiermee op te groeien palingsound

Beverly, especially during the sixties and seventies there were quite a number of Dutch bands who made their mark on the music scene, especially in Europe, it's a pity that The Cats never made it in the USA. Other Dutch bands: Pussycat with Mississippi and If you ever go to Amsterdam. Shocking Blues with Venus. BZN: Amore. Tee Set: Ma Belle Amie. Sandy Coast: Just a Friend. Golden Earring: Radar Love. George Baker Selection: Little Green Bag, and the fabulous Tielman brothers (so-called Indo rock) with little Bird. and many more. I am originally from the Netherlands, but moved to Australia, after 3 years went back to Holland and the first song, I heard from the Cats was Lea, was hooked straight away, I have nearly all their CD's and also when Piet Veerman began as a solo artist, I moved back to Australia at the beginning of 1974, but went back to the old country many times for a holiday, regards Gerard.

Each fri** time I listen to this song and imagine the story sung, a papa walking into his daughters bedroom to kiss her goodnight, finds her on her little knees, praying for a scarlet in her hair, papa going ‘above and beyond’ as a dad should, to find her, his sweet daughter, what she prays for.......in combination with his voice,.....man,...I always break down...Songs from that era, seem to have more story and, however not always, more depth. Listen to the song they wrote and performed titled Lea(h), BUT, before you do, pls try and find the story behind the song as to why and for as well as to whom Leah was written and performed. Also, again, to me, a big fat tear jerker, certainly with the story behind it. Scarlet Ribbon as well as Leah are, however much these two songs from and by The Cats hit me emotionally like a freight train, they remain my all time favourite regarding Cats songs.
@@mvdnbos normaal gesproken ben ik het met je eens want Nederland wordt te vaak en te veel ver "Hollandst" maar als ik me niet vergis ligt Volendam in Noord Holland dus is wat Willem van der Meer schrijft niet fout. Maar zoals gezegd, als de Nederlanders op zich meer van Nederland (of The Netherlands, les Pays-Bas, die Niederlande, i Paesi Bassi enz.) zouden spreken in plaats van Holland zou korrekter zijn.

I had discovered this group at my elder brother’s .. he was in the army and almost all day long everyday he was on duty so I was most of the time alone at his place and I had listened a lot of his cassettes. Thank to him I had discovered a lot of wonderful musics .. My brother had died some quiet years ago and I pray for him at anytime that he is happier in paradise.. I miss him so much and for my father .. may peace upon you my brother & my father too..

Waktu itu entah tahun brp aku lupa,.. aku sedang mendengarkan lagu ini yg sedang diputar di salah satu stasiun radio di Smg, tiba2 kakaku datang dan merebut radio yg sedang ku dengarkan, kemudian aku dan kakaku bertengkar memperebutkan radio itu, maklum waktu itu hanya 1 pesawat radio yg kami miliki, skrng kakakku sdh dipanggil yg maha Kuasa, semoga damai adanya.
