This video is a comparison between the original Blu-ray release of One Punch Man season 2 and the recently released Serious Sounds fan edit. More specifically, the visuals of both releases.
What's the difference between both releases?
The Serious Sounds release addresses several key problems that the official release of season 2 has, by:
-Reworking the SFX for all fight scenes.
-Adding hundreds of misc SFX throughout.
-Swapped 34 soundtracks.
-Included 27 new visual edits including unused smoke fx, addition of blood, redraws.
-Tightened the pacing for episodes 4-6.
-Completely re-animated 2 new cuts.
Each individual change has been documented thoroughly by Flood-Mic, and included alongside the episodes on the link mentioned above.

I think the animation is great, but it has a lot of small and some larger issues here and there that could’ve been fixed with just some ironing out, which seems to be what this project aims to do. The animation seems mid because the animation of season one was quite literally god-tier animation. It was under special circumstances that season one’s animation occurred the way it did. Many of the world’s best anime artists came together to create a sort of love letter to S1.

In each part you can see what they added and it looks too good, it's like it filled a gap where something else was missing that the developers of One Punch Man forgot, it's simply magnificent.

Man, all of these issues were probably due to the lack of time they actually got to animate this season, which is really sad since they only got around 6 months to fully animate everything, which is not a lot of time. Thankfully, they get to make it up for season 3. Hopefully optimistic for it.
Fingers crossed! Honestly, it's pretty amazing what they got done in just 6 months for Season 2.

They can have all the time in the world but they'll ruin it regardless. They don't have skilled animators who are experienced in action animation like Mappa/Bones/Toei etc.

Another problem is the proportions. How are the talented Japanese workers failing at this?
Unfortunately, J.C. Staff was given only 6 months to produce Season 2, which is 80% less time than usual. Typical anime episodes take 2-3 months each to produce. Under the circumstances, they did a pretty great job and created a lot of memorable moments, though some scenes unfortunately couldn't be completed in the way that they wanted.

It's easy to take a work with less care like the animes and make a redraw up in the scenes caring for every detail. It's not fair to compare.
Yet people will praise the fan edit to the moon, if JC Staff did that they will whine about it.

I littarly never understood why speed-o-sound sonic just self detonated after the serious sidestep move. I never noticed the saitama's sidedashing littarly at the corner of my screen. The fan made version was WAYYY more understandable...
I LITTARLY NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY HIS HAIR SUDDENLY TURNED ORANGE, HE DYED IT ORANGE WITH HIS OWN BLOOD.... BRUHHHH WTH, MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE

Daym, I really appreciate serious sounds’ work. It’s really unusual to see the first part of Garou but at least he looks more younger than in official
Honestly s2 was fine for me, not even mentioning how little time they had to work on the show. The only thing that I didn’t like about it was how they made some Garou and Metal Bat look like jojo characters based on their giant ass shoulders 💀
The official one did the sidesteps towards sonic right (a little to fast for the audience to know what just happend tho), but the impact wrong making it look like he just desintegrates, while the fan made did the impact on sonic right but didn't made saitama walk towards him like in the manga

I feel like with the right team, Season 2 could be entirely reanimated to better fit with the level of quality we got in Season 1.
Examples (all on YT): Atserc, Zimaut Animation, 玄铁西瓜, Nomi -- these guys have some super impressive stuff, for people who work solo. On top of this, they could even get help from Village Studio, Science Saru, and MadHouse.
Sadly there would be Copyright Issues so there will never be an official Season 2 Remake and Fanmade ones who garner too much attention will get copyright-claimed too.
@@yasmas8194 I feel like this could be fixed by simply reaching out to these companies and relentlessly making deals with them until they're able to let the fans see what they've created. They could even work directly with the industry in order to license the project, or get a blessing from the IP owners.
@@yasmas8194 True, and what I'm suggesting is likely to suffer from a lack of official support. Unless those four guys gets help from Village Studio (with Yusuke's blessing), Science Saru (with their connections to non-Japanese animation), and MadHouse (with their connections to people like Shingo Natsume), I don't even see this plan as successful. Atserc, Zimaut, 玄铁西瓜, and Nomi could try to create a free release, like TFS did with DBZA, in an attempt to support the official/full release of One Punch Man, but that isn't guaranteed to succeed. My initial plan would be to have those 3 studios (or important people from them) help out these four guys in order to see the project through. I would love more than anything for all four of them to work together to remake seasons 2, 3, and try to make season 4.

might be too much to ask but if only horrid lighting of the metals were fixed as well then its a near contender to S1
I'm with you there. I've spent hours testing ways to restore the original shading, but there's just too much lost information in most cases. It would require a team of animators and a lot of manual work without access to the pre-production files.

@@neck-o All good, nothing wrong with the suggestion. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of AI and avoid relying on it, but this would actually be a good use-case so I still tested the possibility several times with several models. Sadly, still no luck.
You'd need to train a custom model for this type of edit and it still wouldn't likely give an acceptable result due to the strength of the metal filter.

This is far more faithful to being a manga adaptation than what we got
Some of the redraws are not well composited and just feel off.
Apart from that, it's very good.
Yeah, sadly I'm not a compositing artist or an animator, so a few of my edits aren't as well-executed as I'd like. I certainly can't compete with J.C. staff at their best. The project is primarily focused on sound and music, so I only made visual changes where I felt they would be most effective given my skillset.

I'm amazed that the fandom was able to accomplish this, but honestly just makes me hate J.C staff even more. There's no way a director looked at this and thought it was alright, fans coming together and not only fixing but upgrading the product should be the ultimate embarrassment for a company.
The biggest part of this project was its sound not its animation, give it a watch yourself it sounds so much better

this is great and all. but i hate the fact that people dont appreciate the goods of it. i mean look at elder centipede. literally one of the best cgs ive ever seen in anime. I also love sonic vs the ninjas and of course the injured garou vs the heroes fight. those are top tier animations tbh.
