Rough is the one song that put them right up there with the big3 3rd gen girl groups (Twice, BlackPink and Red Velvet) like they were competing with the best at their peaks which was insane for such a small company.
gfriend mvs are irreplaceable. they really did an excellent job in embracing those aesthetic configurations particulary to the audience.
that's the group that made me realize i love sad and dramatic music

Rough is so iconic. Rough got them their 1st win and is still the Kpop girl group song with the 2nd most music show wins (APINK - LUV being #1). They went viral a few months before its release due to a video of the girls slipping and falling on their faces while performing Me Gustas Tu in the rain.
THE PRODUCTION, THE LYRICS, THE MELODIES, THEY DONT MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS ANYMORE IN KPOP.
Yeah... I miss that honestly. 😢
In my opinion, maybe no other kpop groups tried, and maybe because they can't par on how GFRIEND delivered such style and music in kpop. This has became their trademark. A huge respect on how GFRIEND popularized and this style and once you hear something similar music like they did, you would instantly remember "oh it feels like GFRIEND".

Also in my opinion crossroads also explains TFTMN a bit especially Umji and Yuju. The basics of their storyline are that they're just a group of besties who get granted cute little magic powers by a lake (in Love Whisper) but they end up becoming envious of each other(e.g stuffed animals are associated with Yerin's power but often seen with Umji). Eunha is concerned about this and I don't remember the specifics but she ends up being given 5 butterflies and everytime she releases one, they go back in time but at the same time the glass bead (symbolism for innocence as we know) becomes darker and darker (and in apple when she releases all of them the glass bead turns red > apple > temptation > they become witches)
So when does Mago come into the story? I love that song, but it didn't seem to fit the story.
@@carterjones4675In Mago, they're free, they're modern witches. They don't need to be just evil, they can coexist with good and evil within them. The lyrics of Mago say "No more fairytale" (cause the whole trilogy of Crossroads till Mago was told in a way that it felt like a fairytale. They even had HQs) and "My life is waiting for you (yes, you), her smiling at me in the mirror" the word "her" in this context mean themselves. Anyways, they're free and making a party, to be more specific, the Walpurgis Night (name of the Mago Album), which in some places are related with burning stuff and dancing. It's also related to witches in a way...
The concept photos to the Walpurgis Night album also explains some stuff, like them being business woman, or just having fun outfits. They're like any other woman, and they don't need to be pure an innocent forever.

GFRIEND is really such a legendary group for me. Their music is something else, and that feeling you whenever you hear their songs is something I can't find to other groups. They're irreplaceable, I miss them so much.
You should definitely check their dance practices or choreos, they are one of my favorite groups to watch when it comes to choreography. They are also known as a group who have "Knife-like choreography" and as what everyone tells "Synchronization Queens"
You neeeeeeed to check out their "blind" dance practice for mago. It's crazy how they get the choreography right even though they can't see

I felt sorry for you trying to understand the Time for the Moon Night video as Buddies were totally confused at the time as well. Later videos revealed that Eunha was the only one left alive after all the other members killed each other being jealous of each other’s special powers. Only Eunha with her magic power of time travel by releasing one of her 4 magic blue butterflies 🦋 can she try to correct the wrongs of the past. You will see a lot relating to this storyline in the Crossroads music video which is more like a movie.
The Time for the Moon Night video has a series of flashbacks to Eunha remembering when they were all happy together, interspersed with Yuju visiting the grave of a deceased member and Yerin crying listening to a departed member’s voice on a radio cassete. Sowon the leader and mum to the group is seen comforting them throughout. You will see them fighting each other in the video for Fingertip.
Later on in the video only Eunha is alive and she waits for nightfall, the Time for the Moon Night in the title, when she can be reunited with the deceased members in her dreams again. But she is scared of Sunrise when she will lose them again which is why that is the follow up song in their discography.
This is the first song when Yuju gets a rest vocally and Eunha takes over for Gfriend’s legendary high notes. Yuju went missing for months from Gfriend’s schedules shortly before Sunrise was released and the company covered up why. We never did find out what happened but she certainly handed over the high notes to Eunha a lot more after that. She also had lost a little of weight when she returned for the Sunrise promotion so it appears that she had been ill but we can only speculate as their company seemed to delight in secrecy.
Navillera inexplicably always makes me emotional, my eyes water everytime I listen to it and I have no idea why since is such a lively song
gfriend also has so many insane bsides like sunshine, trust, vacation, you are not alone, rain in the spring time and many more :)

Rough is their second comeback but the first after Me Gustas Tu (Glass Bead was their debut). It was also The Song of 2016 - the best selling song of that year in South Korea and winner of 15 trophies. Time for the Moon Night was written by the same composer. Btw, I would really check out the dance practice for both songs because the dances are really amazing but you don't hardly see them in the mv.
Btw, since you enjoy that style (with the strings), listen to Destiny by the group Lovelyz - it's another amazing song.

PS: Just for notes, "Sunny Summer" and "Summer Rain" are more like *special songs* (a summer comeback and reckpage for an EP, respectively).
I am really looking forward to seeing your reaction to their dance practice videos. That is when you will notice their amazing synchronisation and be able to enjoy the beautiful formations they create. They make the difficult look so effortless it takes a while to fully appreciate just how unique their dancing is. They have pin point precision to the exact spot where they need to be at every second of the song in order to create the required formations perfectly, even if they have to hop diagonally backwards (as in Love Whisper) to find it or if totally blindfolded (as in both Apple and Mago). Double speed is no problem for them either and they literally created the concept for Weekly Idol when a viewer rang in and asked them to perform Rough at double speed which was unexpected and unrehearsed. They killed it so they got harder and harder variants to test drive a new concept in future shows they did. The presenters said if GFriend cannot manage it, we will forget it as it is clearly impossible.

5:22 If you pay closer attention to the Clock formation at the end, you'll see that each successive girl holds her head higher than the previous one. From Yerin's head down to Eunha's head held high. The song Rough, literally translated from Korean - Running Through Time. And the name Rough - indicates a Difficult Period in Life, when girls after school are forced to overcome difficulties away from each other, this is what the last Clock formation is dedicated to.
I love their passionate melancholy and powerful innocent music! They stood out so much in kpop during their era. I miss them 🥺

They were like seventeen so talented they have the best choreos and the Synchronization and they are friends like the 98s line sinb and umji and seugkwan
So glad you're gonna check out some dance practices. They genuinely have some of the prettiest and most synchronized choreo executions. Whether blind folded or dancing at 2× speed, they always manage to keep that execution (recommend those videos as well😭). I'm glad you enjoy their older music too. It's equal parts nostalgic, passionate, melancholy, and happy at the same time? So unique.

I miss her vocals from early era. She's regressed a lot imo but hopefully she can bounce back. I really miss her clear resonance.
8:30 this hand sign symbolizes a butterfly in Korean Nabi (there is no V sound in Korean), hence Navillera - a Korean poetic epic, describing the flight of feelings from one heart to another, like the flight of a butterfly. The blue butterfly is one of the main symbols of GFriend, and even the VIVIZ Fandom Name is called Na V.
Time for the Moon Night is my favourite Gfriend song. It has this amazing sense of melancholy that very few other songs can give me.
I was fortunate enough to see Viviz at the MIK Festival in London last year. And I could not believe my ears when TFTMN started playing. I cried my goddamn soul out that day.
So glad to see you come back to Gfriend so soon - and the sooner the better. The selections you had for this video basically highlight the unique sound of Gfriend. The dominant presence of string and anime-like melody underscore the specific sound for a Gfriend song. The first two songs came from Gfriend's early part after their debut - bursting with youthful energy and anticipating the unknown future as they enjoyed each other's company during their formative days. Yuju’s vocals are what drew me to Gfriend. Her voice is pure gold, especially in Rough
everytime i hear time for the moon night and sunrise i feel like the songwriters personally challenged themselves to do as many key changes as possible in the most unconventional ways possible while still making them pop songs and not modern jazz renditions (and not complaining whatsoever here)
You need to check out the choreographies of their song!! One of the reason why they blew up was because of how intense and in sync they were with their choreo!!

It's not super clear but Navillera mv is actually where their story takes the first turn. Instead of it all being just happy yeyy besties (some of it still is) they're fighting and being a bit shady there. Also Eunha and Yerin are gay :)
The korean title of 'Rough' is 'Running through time'. This song and its mv were inspired by the famous anime film 'The girl who leapt through time'.

Sunrise is one of my all time favourite songs. The vocals near the end of the song and Eunha's final part gives me CHILLS.
