JUDY GARLAND: 'SWANEE' FROM 'A STAR IS BORN'.

- Judy performed 'Swanee' in A Star Is Born, & it became a part of her concert & recording legacy.
The song was George Gershwin's first and biggest pop hit, and one of the most memorable songs ever written. Late in the summer of 1919, Gershwin wrote the song with legendary lyricist Irving Caesar. The two sat atop a Manhattan bus and composed most of the song en route from T.B. Harms Publishing Company to Gershwin's apartment. When they arrived, Gershwin and Caesar worked out the kinks on the piano, and within a few hours,'Swanee'was born.
'Swanee' received very little notice when it was first introduced ... until Al Jolson. As soon as Jolson heard the song, he fell in love with it.
I've been away from you a long time
I never thought I'd missed you so
Somehow I feel
You love is real
Near you I long to/wanna be
The birds are singin', it is song time
The banjos strummin' soft and low
I know that you
Yearn for me too
Swanee ! You're calling me !
Chorus :
Swanee !
How I love you, how I love !
My dear ol' Swanee
I'd give the world to be
Among the folks in
D-I-X-I-E-ven no[w]My mammy's
Waiting for me

I wish I could have just given her a hug and said thank you.
Me to
Same she did it more than awesome 😢😢💓🥰
I think the simple truth about Judy Garland is that she makes us feel so much better to watch her and listen to that amazing voice.
THIS is how you perform. Judy Garland's talent was and still is absolutely untouchable.
Folks, you're watching the greatest entertainer in Hollywood history right here!
Nobody could touch her. When she was feeling good about life and herself, she was absolutely untouchable.
Judy should have won the oscar
There is no doubt about that.
They robbed Grace several times before, but apparently it's "bold" to act without makeup so they give it to her the same year as Judy's definitive performance. It's sad since Grace deserves recognition, but her Oscar will always be seen as a lie because Judy gave one of the best performances of all time, and we didn't have a Kanye to jump on stage back then
Lorenzo recognition, yes, but Grace never gave an Oscar winning performance. In anything. She could act some, but her beauty was what made her famous. Put her against any actress of her day, she just wasn’t that great to deserve an Oscar, and definitely not against the phenomenal Judy and her multitalented accomplishments.
Without a doubt!
If only she knew just how much her legacy continues on today. She was one of the most brilliant (and prolific) entertainers to have ever lived. Rest in peace, Judy.
You cannot describe her voice, all you can say is she had "THE VOICE"
She makes it look effortless .. which it couldn't possibly have been
.
Probably the greatest all-around female talent in Hollywood history. Imagine that-being eaten alive by your own majesty.
65bertha s argirisbertha is a
Spot-on... thank you...
She had no internal strength for some reason. She picked lousy men who betrayed her and then refused to stay off the fucking pills and booze. If she had just realized how adored she was, she could have told them all to fuck off and rebuild her career and lived to be an old lady.
@@CaptainSpalding72 She was conditioned from earliest childhood back when there were no child protection laws. With like that, is understandable, albeit very tragic, thought she didn't have the will to break the patterns - it was all she knew.
Simply the GREATEST ENTERTAINER in Hollywood history!!! Enough said!
What admire me most about Ms Judy Garland in all her MGM musical movies was her high-spirited,well-acted out,and impressive performances; her dynamic, fascinating, and robust voice;& her memorable, lovely, and well-rendered songs. She's no longer with us.But she'd left behind something special, significant,& wonderful for us to get delighted,to feel inspired,& to be fond of.Her talents, her beauty,& her bequests will always be recognized, admired,& cherished. She's exceptional performing artist.
That voice coming out of that tiny woman....she was absolutely the ultimate star....and a triple threat....sing, dance, act....this number is flawless.
There are many princesses of the musical.
There is only one Queen.
Judy was one of the top best talents out there, there will never be another one with a voice like hers. Rest In Paradise, Judy.
AMAZING! That is just far TOO MUCH talent for one person to possess! Judy Garland! OMG!
I get goosebumps and chills up my spine every time I hear her hit that last note. You are my hero, Judy. Your beautiful spirit will live on forever and ever.
She is a bucket full of happiness, talent and EVERYTHING rolled into one!
+1 (281) 545‑3552
If she could have held on a little longer, we could have let her her know how special she truly was
This has the lot. Great song, fantastic dancing, exquisite voice and best of all its got the great Judy Garland.
The timing in this number is impeccable. Even if you just focus on the background dancers, they're so perfectly in sync. This is like clockwork. It's beautiful.
And this a edited version, a closeup of Judy. When you watch the clip the way it was shown in theaters, it's even more impressive.
I'm a longtime Garland fan (35+ years), and I'd say this was the best song-and-dance number she ever put on film. Even after the umpteenth time seeing it, I still get chills down my spine at the end.
LOVE that vocal oomph she gives at the end when the music stops for a bit
Have to disagree…although Judy never gives a bad performance but her Get Happy number inSummer Stock is the best!!! and BTW she did it in one take…take that Beyoncé
I could watch this for a very long time and be perfectly happy.
I don't know what happened. I just saw this and started crying. Just a remarkable talent. God. Remarkable isn't even a word that can describe Judy's talent.
Yes! Forty five years after she died people are on this page saying they listen to this over and over again. She sang this about sixty years ago. Show me another entertainer with that kind of magic.
This was the era of her absolute best singing. It has never been topped by anyone. Later, her voice lost some of the shine and developed some ragged edges, but here it is simply astounding. Feast your ears.
I wish she'd done more stuff in the 50s when her voice was like this.
Unfortunately she was a heavy smoker for years. I can only imagine how great her voice would have been ( or stayed) if she didn't smoke.
Heavy smoking, drinking, pills, and then add poor diet and bad sleep habits due to the pills. This woman was even greater than what we all know and would have dominated Hollywood in every single way if she had lived a healthy lifestyle, had a personal trainer, and been surrounded by people who wanted the best for her. It’s a damn shame she didn’t get involved with nice, regular people outside of Hollywood. Seems like a lot of people truly wanted to help her outside of the shark-infested waters of Hollywood.
Fantastic vocal and brilliantly choreographed. One of the best numbers ever committed to film.
I never realized this, but she's actually really short. I guess her pure talent makes her tower over everyone else.
One of the best female vocalists that ever lived !
Judy was a great great talent! I love you Judy!
I'm glad Judy Garland was able to enjoy her fame and the love of her fans (which was most of the U.S.A). Her 1961 Carnegie Hall concert is posted on CZcams Music. You can hear how much the audience loved every song she sang. The applause (at times) was thundering.
Hey how are you??
headphonic8 just chill out and enjoy Judy. It was a different time
A great talent that had a tragic life. RIP Judy.
This was one of my very favorite songs Judy sang in A Star Is Born
Boy can she sing and hold those notes with such ease.
Yes, and it's CRAZY. She is one of the best performers EVER!
When God made her, he broke the mold! Absolutely no one compares to her.
I love the tempo change in this song. I wish it was longer!
The energy that comes out of her is just off the charts. She electrifies performances.
Greatest entertainer of all time, what a flipping legend! just, perfection.
Hello dear how are you doing today hope you are still staying safe over there
always makes me tear up. genius is mysterious.
judy.. i love you!! and you are beautiful! rest in peace sweet heart!!!. yeah im only 22 but you are my favorite singer ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My absolute fave singers: Judy and Edith Piaf.
For me: Judy, Mary Martin, & Julie Andrews
Великийй мюзикл, каждый эпизод которого настолько совершенен, что хочется всякий раз его пересматривать вновь и вновь.
Well, when you realize that on a good night what may have been the greatest singer the usa ever produced was a little ninety pound woman who had pipes like a battleship and sang with a heart as big as Lake Michigan it's a pretty overwhelming experience. Take care, sis.
She has such an incredible precision and tone to her voice
great great great... this is talent!!! Judy the best!
WOW AMAZING!!!
God I love Judy
I agree with Rick Smith, her sheer talent gives me chills. The same thing happens when I listen to Chopin, or look at a great painting or watch a talented dancer, talent, real talent, which is what Judy had is inspirational and very moving.
+glen Mclaughlin Watching Judy perform sends shivers down my spine but in a great way. I can't believe how she can also dance with a cane while she sings! Is there no end to her talents. She was triple-threat!!
That voice, it is totally incredible from that little 4ft 11" frame. When Minnelli worked with her he said he was stunned that under all the pressure of making a film and other troubles she was going through, he could tell her anything about what he wanted in the scene and she would listen and do it all perfectly. She would also watch her 'stand-in' a few times go through the routine and she would memorise it and have it off pat. She is truly incomparable. Just watched this again, hence the two year wait, lol.
Hahahahahahahah!
To the comments about racism, we all know what a dark and terrible time in history that was, unspeakable. But you can't air-brush history, you have to have it there to remember. Judy wasn't a racist, even when she put on 'black face' in one of her movies, it was of it's time. They were told what to do and if you didn't do it you were out. It is still one of her best numbers ever.
This never gets old.
She had it all.
World be smaller without Judy Garland
Judy I wish could hug you to said I am so so bigger fan ever I was born in 1993
Love those old musical movies. Hotlips Mrs Allen
Wow! And to think we call people like Justin Beiber "artists." No...Judy Garland. Now SHE is an ARTIST.
Ok, I have now watched this thirty-five times in a row. I think I need an intervention.
Effortless perfection.
Quintessential Judy.
Judy Garland should have been chosen for Best Actress for the 1954 Academy Awards.
Good God, that's good.
To sound perfect, all this woman up there has to do is open her mouth, whatever comes out is beautiful!
GENIUS!!!
A great classique movie , hats up!
Damn what a voice!
As a singer/actor/director I have to say with a very straight face that Judy Garland was by far the greatest entertainer of ALL TIME so far. Maybe someone will come around who will pass her but so far all we have are the Lady Gooey types. But again as a singer I know how hard it is to do what she does. When I think of Judy's singing and my singing all I can say is that she is SINGING and I'm trying to SING. If anyone would like to hear me trying just friend me on FB and I'll send you some of my music. Garen Garson
Judy was not one of the greatest entertainers, SHE WAS THE GREATEST TALENT, AND THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER THAT EVER LIVED. PERIOD!!! Acting: comedy or drama.
Dancing: tap or ballroom.
Singing: swing, boogie, hymns, patriotic, torch, blues, jazz, contemporary, barbershop, ragtime, and rock and roll. Did you know that rock and roll was actually created based on Judy? She was the most gifted human being EVER. SHE COULD DO IT ALL. if you ever watch the movie THE HARVEY GIRLS, when you are watching the big production number ON THE ATCHISON TOPEKA AND THE SANTA FE. JUDY DID HER ENTIRE PART WITHOUT ANY REHEARSAL. SHE WATCHED HER STAND-IN DO HER PART, AND DIRECTOR GEO. SIDNEY SAID TO JUDY, GO TAKE YOUR PLACE ON THE CABOOSE, WE'LL RUN THROUGH IT AND SEE WHERE WE ARE. JUDY REPLIED "I THINK I GOT IT" AND GEO.SAID TO ROGER EDENS, IS SAYING WHAT I THINK SHE SAYING? SHOOT IT, WITH OUT ANY REHEARSAL. HE ANSWERED YES, AND ROGER ENCOURAGED GEO TO GO FOR IT, AND JUDY NAILED IT WITHOUT ANY REHEARSAL AT ALL. THAT'S HOW GREAT THIS LADY WAS. And that is suppose to be an absolutely true story.
The Best!
like wow wow wow!!!!!!!!!!! no else could ever sing like that she is an amazing singer i absoloutly love love love this sosososos much.this is amazing who could ever sing as well as this? she was the tops
Nice work with the cane I wish I could do that.
She is in great voice, and the "Born in a Trunk" sequence has some wonderful individual parts. But it's supposed to be a scene from "Vicki Lester's" screen debut, and I find it impossible to imagine what movie it could possibly fit into, other than "A Star is Born" itself. It seems more like a retrospective tribute to a great star they'd show at some kind of Friar's Club thing.
Thanks so much for posting, and for all that wonderful background info!
Just watched A Star Is Born for the first time last night. I'd only really seen Judy in The Wizard of Oz and her concerts, and this film gave me a whole new level of her astounding talent as an actress and entertainer!
amazing
Beautiful High Def...better than my old VHS copy...thanks so much.
What a beautiful performance. I can't help but be a bit meloncoloy about A Star is Born. Had it been a super success at the box office and had Judy gotten the oscar...her life might have played out differently. She might have possibly gotten away totally from her addictions and lived alot longer.
Amazing...... Hollywood treated her like shit. R.I.P 🌹
I love this part. I love love Judy Garland
My skin is schocking by emotional wave when i listenening this song
Bravo Judy.
A terrific stereophonic sound and a rare girly there she was the very star! Emmanuel from Paris
her smile was sooo enchanting....
I wish I could met you to hug to said I love you you have change the world your legend
she moves me deep down inside. thanks and best wishes.
Great clip and how fitting to have that Jolson photo at closing. If Jolie wasn't her favorite singer and inspiration, then it is hard to imagine who was.
A Star Is Born was her best movie she did with producer husband Sid Luft this song love it all the songs but this is so great song ever tap your feet dance sing out loud
just complete perfection
Classic!!
I LOVE HER LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
i love judy :)
yeah, brilliant, and who needed Born in a Trunk. slowed the pic down, and defnitely cost Judy the Oscar. for sure.
Thank you for posting this!

WOW
i liked it(really liked it)
If you all like this, you should see her acapella version in a video called "Judy at the recording booth" I always thought her notes were amazing in the end, but hearing just her voice soar like that is beyond riveting.
holy sh-t!
At the A Star is Born premiere, people actually cheered after each musical performance like they were at a live concert, and at 1:27 it's not hard to see why. That does not happen today.
fuuuuuuck her voice is amazing here.
IF YOU EVER HEAR THE OUTAKES OF SWANEE IN THE STUDIO I FEEL OUT OF MY SEAT LISTENING TO THE OUTTAKE FROM THE OWERE FO THAT VOICE HOOLLERRRRRR AND HELL YEAH OH YEAH SHE CANT BE THAT GOOD. BUT SHE WAS AND IS GARLAND FAN FOR LIFE
IF YOU EVER CATCH THE RECORDING SWANEE OUTAKES SHE MAKE S HER OWER IS AMAZING I FELL OUT OF MY FREAKING CHAIR AND SKIED BRETAH AAND WENT DAMN NO LIE YEASH SHE IS AMAZING
Absolutely brilliant performance! I am reading these comments about the lyrics being racist. They are historical. Political correctness taken too far is the enemy of truth. If we don't preserve records of how society was in the past we can repeat mistakes. Yes, the mammy slave woman wasn't desirable. But the concept of a mammy stayed in the south for many years and gave women a living. Emancipation didn't mean roles ceased to exist. People lived in what they knew. Change came slowly. We don't want to enforce instant change or erase history. For example, if we throw away the deprecating old cartoons of blacks in the south housed at the Library of Congress, we lose a record of how bad it was. Though it is politically incorrect by nature, it's not incorrect to keep the record.
sunlitweb , Great performance, but yeah no excuses it's racist lol.
It was horrible but just seeing it isn't changing it there should be some amends made to fix the issue.
Al Jolson would be proud
I'm just imagining how many times they might've had to re-shoot the scene if she dropped that cane.
Heh. Luckily, they say she was able to pick up any dance routine with almost any prop almost magically fast. I imagine they having to repeat that scene due to an extra dropping something as much more likely...
ZenonPlazmos You're right :) It's funny to think about; imagine someone saying to an extra: "Gosh flam it! Tim, either you hold onto that that damned cane or we'll duck tape you to it!"
Kelsey Perez once per every time she dropped it and you can see it was filmed as a close-up insert which wouldnt affect it the the filming of the rest of the scene. the guys dancing behind her after the king catching scene were really dancing their asses off but no one ever looks at them
Also check out her singing "Dixie Melody" here on youtube. The one I'm referring to is in color and was from some TV show in the fifties. It also is one of the best things I've ever clapped my eyes on. She was so pretty and so talented and sang with so much emotion. Best wishes to you and all her other fans.
