  • Listen, Darling (1938) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ListenDarling
Shot right before she ascended to the cinematic firmament in Wizard of Oz, Darling pairs Judy up with fellow child star Freddie Bartholomew. Judy and Freddie play pals Pinkie and Buzz who will do anything to stymie the marriage plans of Pinkie's mom (Mary Astor). Alan Hale and Walter Pidgeon play the kid's preferred step-candidates, and Judy sings "Zing! Went the Strings of my Heart," her audition piece for MGM, reprised years later in her legendary 1961 Carnegie Hall concert.
    Directed By Edwin L. Marin
Starring Freddie Bartholomew, Judy Garland, Mary Astor

Written in 1934 , Zing ! Went The Strings Of My Heart " was a Garland favorite while she was still a young vaudeville sensation . Her mother Ethel is said to have made her original arrangement , with its slow introductory passage and dramatic mid - song shift to a swinging up tempo finale . She sang this version on NBC's Shell Chateau radio program on the night of November 16 , 1935 , with her stricken father listening in on a hospital room radio . The following day he died of spinal meningitis . " I sang my heart out for him , " Garland later recalled , " but by morning he was gone . " The song remained in her repertoire the rest of her life . She sang it in her 1938 film Listen Darling and on numerous radio appearances . It would later become a perennial concert favorite .

Mayer, the boss of MGM, had Judy and Mickey Rooney on uppers to keep up with the high demands of working for MGM. She got her first pregnancy terminated, demanded by Louis B. Mayer because he wanted to hold her to a certain image. That haunted her for the remainder of her life. Judy’s mother treated her like a cash cow, never advocating for her when she was a minor. That combined with poor self esteem caused by the movie studio.
Again, she didn’t have love from her family or the industry. MGM and her mom pushed the pills down her throat all for money. So take what you want with that dude.

Never could carry a tune, never knew where to start
You came along when everything was wrong and put a song in my heart
Dear when you smiled at me, I heard a melody
It haunted me from the start
Something inside of me started a symphony
Zing! Went the strings of my heart
'Twas like a breath of spring, I heard a robin sing
    About a nest set apart
All nature seemed to be in perfect harmony
Zing! Went the strings of my heart
Your eyes made skies seem blue again
What else could I do again
But keep repeating through and through
    "I love you, love you"
I still recall the thrill, guess I always will
    I hope 'twill never depart
Dear, with your lips to mine, a rhapsody divine
Zing! Went the strings of my heart

Though this is the most tame version of this song. It still has all the emotional significance of the longer swing versions. She was an earthly angel and now she is a heavenly one. I am almost positive that Mary Astor's tears are real and not an act. It is kind of strange to me though that her demeanor towards Judy is so contrasted between her superior sweet, and motherly coddling nature in 'Listen, Darling' to her more headstrong, strict, and somewhat annoyed demeanor towards Judy in 'Meet Me In St. Louis', but I suppose this is possibly due to Judy's missed rehearsals, sneaking of the set, and not being on time for the shoots. Even still I love their chemistry together in both movies, and as for Mary's change in demeanor towards Judy, it works well in the latter film seeing how Judy is portraying a young woman in her late teens.

According David Shipman's biography, "Judy Garland: the secret life of an american legend", during the filming of "Meet me in St. Louis" Mary was upset with Judy because her behavior on the sets, she even spoke with her in implacable words saying that she seemed to forget that she was a vaudeville artist and calling her "child". But she loved Judy and she said on her autobiography that she fell sorry about her premature death.
