spot. on. description. admittedly, what i consider "the best jd/tmg" is incredibly fluid & heavily dependent on my mood & headspace... and yet, for some unknown reason, one thing never changes: unhinged jd is the version of jd i like best ¯\(°_o)/¯
leaving this as a general comment because this is one of my favorite lives performances of one on my favorite tmg songs but your channel is so precious!! thank you for the work you're doing, recent subscriber but i expect to be here a long time :)
(rly love the pre song banter, so here it is transcribed ❤) Hey! So-- so this is a song about a couple of people in a car. And uh, and it's kind of hot in the car though it’s cold outside, and the reason it’s hot in the car is the seething temperature of their hatred. And it’s sort of like, you know, it's one of those situations where you’re really-- let’s say you're in this car. You’ve probably at some point, odds are pretty good you've been in this car at some point, right? And uh, and at one point or another you look over at the speedometer, and it says seventy-five, you're riding shotgun, and-- and you think, you do this sort of quick calculation-- you don't really know, you're not a physicist, you know? Much less a criminal investigator, anything like that. You're just a person in a car that you wish you weren’t in, and-- but you think, “if i... pop the door and drop and roll… and i tuck my elbows in… between here and the bushes at the shoulder, what's the damage i sustain?” And you picture your lifeless, unconscious body rolling… down the beautiful hill, and you see yourself as though in a japanese film, and think, “y’know, i might make it, and maybe i will look up, and i will see the last bit of the car speeding away from me, and i will-- and i will count that as a victory.” this song-- this song is about people who have chosen whatever the opposite of victory is. It's called family happiness.
I HOPE THE STARS DON’T EVEN COME OUT TONIGHT, I HOPE WE BOTH FREEZE TO DEATH LOOK AT THE PERSON IVE TURNED INTO, TELL ME, HOW DO YOU LIKE HIM NOW??? NO STANDARDS OF ANY KIND TO BREAK, NO CREEDS TO DISAVOW
Man, I wish they'd dig this one up again. What a phenomenal performance of a phenomenal song.
Coroner's Gambit barely on tune poorly recorded intensity was my first exposure to the Mountain Goats. loved Darnielle since.
This may be the least hinged I’ve heard John sing
(complimentary)
john has been in this car. this we can tell

i respect your take but this song is very hinged
In the chord sheet it literally says "try to break the strings"
This is so much more powerful then the album version, I absolutely love it
This is easily among the greatest songs of all time
god this song already hit so hard on the album but this just transcends
I think this upload/ performannce may have just saved my sanity and even life to an extent. Thank you ❤
i have listened to this one particular performance so many times it's unhealthy thank you for uploading

tfw JD is let loose on the keyboard but doesn't have his boots on
but....the guitar.....the guitar part is still playing....just another tMG Mystery
Yuval should have been the fourth Mountain Goat
Matty should have been the fifth.
holy fucking shit
I just noticed the terrifying baby doll in the rear view mirror. I will not sleep tonight
banter reminds me of the old All Japan Women's Wrestling motto: Victory Through Guts
