- First and foremost, I would like to thank John Stebal and Billy Coakley for creating such an amazing event, and Brother's Lounge for hosting and making these types of events possible. I would also like to thank John Anthony Turner for sharing his gift with us, as your voice on the instrument is truly inspiring and captivating.
Idk what gear I'm playing, but occasionally the hi-hat arm would disconnect and then randomly reconnect. I'm not sure if Billy was helping out with that while I was playing as my eyes were closed for most of this lol
Missed a couple snare hits crucify me in the comments babes - Hudba
the drumming is so loose
he just fucked up, ouch this is painful
@@MadailinBurnhope ??
@@DrunkWizard40 I don't feel like the post was ambiguous
You don't realise how hard this is to play
@@MadailinBurnhope will you marry me??
"I guess you're not ready for that... but your kids are gonna love it."
Marty - circa 1955?
That was Marvin walking near the end, texting his brother Chuck, "you know that new sound you were looking for?"
😂😅😂
The existence of Smooth Jazz implies the existence of Rough Jazz.
Meshuggah is literally rough jazz lol.
No. They're literally metal
@@bigbastard_lol you're no fun at all
@@bigbastard_lolyou must be fun
@@bigbastard_lolok well Meshuggah is at least figuratively rough jazz
@@bigbastard_lol no but you don't understand, if you check out some of the earlier stuff. You will see Allan Holdsworth-esque fusion solos, and very ethereal ambiental jazz fusion type stuff. The meshuggah of today is a bit different now but still, it began as what I like to call 'Djazz' :p
Of coarse a jazz club appreciates a meshuggah groove.. love it!!
They can't deny the Sweeds
respect to everyone in that room 1:30 young kid at the middle left could not contain himself
2:50 that man with hat
That kid was headbanging from the start. At 1:07 he even throws fists into the air XD
@@Punishment_for_Decadencebro was feeling the djent
Credits to the crowd. Non-metal fans I know would just ask me to stop 10 seconds into the song. They seem to pick up on the rhythm and just appreciate the drumming. I should join a jazz club more often
Absolutely dude, the people who come out to these things are usually super open-minded and eager to hear new stuff
Kid was the only one banging to this.
My favorite is when a less metal audience allows themselves to push through the "noise" and listen. Gaps bridged. ❤
Meshuggah is just spicy fusion. Destroy Erase Improve is basically a fusion album with screaming.
ehhh,,,,, thats understating it a bit... I would add thrash metal to that list of genres
Henceforth, I'm going to call Future Breed Machine a spicy jazz fusion song.
@@KasbashPlays bro listen to sublevels
Sublevelssss
The Allan Holdsworth influence is undeniable.
I thought this was going to be one of those videos with fake-added metal in an unusual situation, but the title is actually correct! :D
I like to "keep it one hunnit" as the suburban kids say
I've played this venue. The crowd is usually pretty open to whatever. Glad it worked out in this case!
shout out to the boomer in the cowboy hat vibing haaaaard
I saw xD
I was thinking the crowd may have really enjoyed your Monk of Buksan album.
I hope you get to play your own music live and I also hope you RECORD IT FOR US nom nom nom
Lmao I was just going to say Jurassic Park hat guy was wearing a Nothing shirt under the button up
Hahahaha yeah
That’s brave to play Meshuggah to an audience that is not used to this type of music. Beautiful drumming and consistent flow
Meshuggah its basically jazz with extra-steps
Metal in general is just jazz with different tuning and instrumentation
@@DonnieY23 same with blues
Giant steps at that
I see what you did there! 🤙
i appreciate every one of them bobbing their heads and trying to find their way into it
The subtle "hell yeah" at the end
The gentleman in the brimmed hat gradually getting more and more in to it is very wholesome. Drives around town now screaming his head off and growling like Jens.
Amazing work. The guy in the hat looks like a new Meshuggah fan to me.
I think so too :)
I thought the same thing! He seems to immediately recognize the pulse!
some current 50 60 year olds have vast knowledge of music then u think they grew up through the 50s -70s they witnessed the birth of hole styles and genres
The Meshuggah members are in their 50s, so I don't think anyone here doubts that you can have a vast knowlegde of music at that age.
for not being your main instrument you are a killer drummer, really liked this!
Thanks dude, I'm definitely better at the skin flute 🎷
@@CrispJohnsonbruh what
man i wanted to see their reaction at the end
Luckily nobody threw up lol. The guy hosting this drummer's karaoke, Billy Coakley, did some demos with me on polyrhythms/polymeters right after to give the crowd an idea of what was going on. Super nice people :)
I love how Indiana Jones made and appearance and did some headbanging lol
Man, you absolutely rock! The world needs more eye openers like you! Thank you! And excellent drumming by the way!
Man this is so wholesome. I love the fact people are chilling and listening and not kicking up a stink. Kudos on the drumming that was pretty much note for note, sick job. I just can’t believe there’s a cowboy nodding his head to the beat, huge kudos 😂😂😂❤❤❤
how is this in my recommendations? it's amazing!
The algorithm works in mysterious ways
I don't know why this showed up in my feed but I'm glad it did. Solid.
This is fantastic; super happy that this passed through my recommendations. :)
He does an incredible job and it sounds so crisp and on point, especially being such a difficult song to play. Anyone that comes on here and talks shit on this has their own insecurity issues and gets off on putting people down..which is basically most people.
Great cover! keep doing stuff like this!
He forgot his other bass pedal at home
I just love the cymbal work that Meshuggah came up with the constant cymbal tapping is sexy to hear especially in the parts like 1:53
So groovy 😎 love this song by them
that is a fine fine play through.. top work
on an entirely different note, having the willpower to get up and play this to that crowd is insanely impressive... there was enough that enjoyed it that it would no doubt have felt amazing, but just starting that... wow
Stengah 🙌 first Meshuggah tune that got me in!
Wow he's amazing!
Incredible
Stengah groove got me into drumming. It will always haunt me. Keep me going. The best ever. Pozdro666
goosebumps my guy u nailed it im amazed
Good on you dude challenging song I would just say watch out for those transitions and it will be tight! Cheers man!🤘🏻
Best Jazz Club ever😌
I think i heard that Frederik Thorstendal is a Fan of Charly Parker, John Mclaughlin and Miles Davis.
Tight playing!
I like how you overcompensated after making that first mistake. But you pulled through. We've all been there. Nothing but respect for you going up there and playing.
What a hero
Never realized how hard this song is, but this guy kicks ass!
Smooth!
Listening to Meshuggah for 14 years.
Aside from great playing and immense courage, you easily have the best name ever conceived.
Thank you it's my mother's name
A comment I read somewhere. "Meshuggah- Buncha numbers but good"
This is wicked in so many levels!! Can’t believe such thing even took place. You are super in control behind that kit, amazing !! Thank you for sharing
Ultimate hecklers right here
pretty good listeners! may be this is not their style, but have the patience for the musician. respect.
The people there were awesome
@@CrispJohnson Yes! Near to the end of track they were headbanging a little. And the kid at the start! Amazing!
"It's gonna get heavy kids!" 😂
I used to work there, I definitely played a lot of Meshuggah in the kitchen back then.
I love it, meshuggah still gets me through the restaurant industry today haha
lol, this is hilarious. The guy with the cowboy hat just headbanging all long 🤣Awesome performance too.
An interesting rendition.
Meshhugah is a jazz band.
A very, very intenst jazz band.
So badass, love that he didn't use an instrumental version. I saw a new young metalhead there in the crowd banging his head in is moms arms too. Heck yea.
I remember writing a paper on Stengah in Psych class in college, one of my favorite songs of theirs
That's so awesome. What was the paper about?
@@CrispJohnson The slow crushing creep of addiction
God we need more of this
Fakkin excellent!
Nice bro ❤
Love this!
Your guy in the background on the second kit trying to figure out the timing and failing so hard 😂😂😂😂
Towards the end he had the groove dialed in :) That guy, Billy, is a wealth of drumming knowledge and an insane player
Awesome vidya I love me sum good meshuggah
Hell yeah dude! I love jazz but also Metal
I think Meshuggah is a perfect combination of both dude
As a drummer myself, I think the grooves and the chops Tomas has in this album are phenomenal
Great playing buddy, awesome
Nothing is my favorite album from them. Just tasty grooves littered all throughout that album
@@CrispJohnson same dude, same
I'm still trying to learn the paradiddles and the kick patterns in Spasm
Damn that snare sound is gorgeous
Nice!
thomas hake compositions on drums blow minds
It’s gonna get heavy kids! 🤘🏻
Haha, Billy is a funny guy
this is great haha
That kid knows
Cool is this😊😊😊😊😊😊
haha sick!
Was this open mic? If it was that is freaking genius.
Every jazz had to dig into some meshuggah!
Yes this was an open mic!
🥰
first the kid was getting it then the cowboy hat man
I see you bobbing your head cowboy hat man!
amazing to see above-average age audience enjoying
Wish there was a camera angle of the crowd's facial reaction lol
"Stengah" is my Favorite track on their Nothing album. This album is when Meshuggah really found their sound. And it was all over from there. Still 1 of the Most relevant bands in Metal World still today... I mean this album was released in 02'. But i think its Great u gave these Jazz fans a taste of Metals finest...
Nothing is my favorite metal album. It has probably the biggest effect on most modern metal today imo
Guy in the cowboy hat pass the vibe check
I have so many questions
Ask away~
Hat guy at 5:22 seems to be enjoying it
Billys drum nights are always a blast. Sad I missed this one tho meshuggah rules. Awesome playing man
I can't say enough nice things about Billy, truly a one-of-a-kind human being. Hope to see you at a future drum night!
@@CrispJohnson totally agree man billy is dope. Hoping to come down in june for the next one
Good Choice on Nothing original 🎼. Where are you from ?
Ohio
Fantastic!
Right where it (to some part and extend) belongs...
And thats how the bar made money
as a fusion and metal fan i love this. would love to see a car bomb or animals as leaders.
Jazzhuggah!
grandfathers sit dumbly in shock 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻
Bro I am so confused right now hahaha
У джазменов кепки от Мишуги не поотлетали?😅
Can you do an Animals as Leaders next? :)
Haha no chance, I'm a couple years away from being able to play AAL
Awesome 🎉
The lead singer sounds kinda like Wayne Static
Keep your eyes on the woman against the wall on the right @3:02. She knows what's up.
Metal is just (insert genre) with distortions and screaming.
solid. that a 22" kick or 20?
No idea, it was just the house kit they had set up at this event
@@CrispJohnson No matter if 22 or 20, use it as a crash!
And ..?
the lady on the right just doesn't like that she kinda likes it
To all you haters out there talking down this man's performance: No it's not a competition, as in there are no "winners," but YES it's definitely competitive thats how music gets driven forward, talented people trying to outdo each other, the entire world of metal was based on it. And while sometimes sloppiness may not matter, the only thing that makes meshuggah cool IS the fact they play complex stuff super tightly. It robs the song of impact to play it off time. Other than that lets be honest, its mainly just random chugs haha. The point is, they're not actually random they're perfectly on time. So yeah, it matters. HOWEVER, for playing a random kit at a jazz event not at all set up for it, and having the courage to go up and jam some 'shuggah makes him a hero of mine already. We ALL make mistakes, some shows are better than others. I'm sure he felt every single mistake more than we do, just like every time I get off stage and people say "that was awesome!" and I'm like "ehhh..." but that's what these little shows are for, ironing out the kinks in your live show. I think this is AWESOME, and you should keep doing it, it's the only way to improve. I've been wanting to do the same thing in my area just to have fun around town and play songs that I really want to live. Soo good job dude, I love it
Your perspective on competition between hungry musicians driving music forward is spot on. Without it, musical progress or prog rock wouldn't be where it is today. It's so easy to only hold onto this sense of competition and progress, causing people (myself included) to forget about the true purpose of music -- to FEEL SOMETHING and HAVE FUN! I had an amazing time at this event despite any performance hiccups or kit malfunctions, and that's really what it's all about. Thank you for your thoughtful comment dude :)
