Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

How do you feel about the captain? Do you think he was blinded by love?
Probably yes😔
Yes. I feel so sad right now but it would have been wrong any other way.
sadly yes
Huh nobody notes the sound of music plot hole ?
@@DjRyuk01 What do you mean?
Can somebody else be impressed that she replicated her bedroom so well Monk didn't notice any differences except for the pen?
He probably noticed a few minor things out of place, but the pen was the most damning tbh. But yeah kudos to her for making an exact replica
@@doctorjay8673 Few minor things out of place can be easily explained: "I did a little rearranging, didn't like it, so put everything back." Monk knows "a little off" is no big deal to others, even if it bothers him. Pen rolling on a desk/dresser, or whatever, when it shouldn't... that's harder to explain, because any "fix" you try to claim you did to get the pen to stop rolling, would have evidence of some kind, that something was done to the legs of said furniture.
oh they are replicating towns now too.
That's true
yup- she's sitting in her cell "I got the EXACT chair, the curtains, the friggin wallpaper, the molding, the carpet, drapes, curtain, pen holder, pen, table, the works- and I couldn't find a level parking spot... the pen rolled ????!!!! "
"I parked on a hill." You can hear the disbelief that after all that careful planning, it was one little thing that undid the whole plot.
Kudos to the actress for the portrayal of her character realizing that the flaw in her big plan that ultimately got her caught was that she "parked on a hill". I loved this show back then and I still love it now.
Who sticks her tongue out to say the word “Hill” Sorry to be nitpicky but she just says it so Oddly.
@@chinqupinchatter9485 You're right, this is quite nitpicky.
Mary Voll: Well, the word DOES end with two ls.
@@chinqupinchatter9485 I hadn't noticed it, but now that I've gone back to look at it again--yeah, that is quite pronounced, isn't it?
Wouldn’t be the first time a Monk villain lost for an incredibly minor error.
Cop who killed her lover in one of the Christmas episodes? Caught because she mixed up 2 differently sized envelopes.
I think, privately, Captain Stottlemeyer started suspecting Linda of the murder when she told him (earlier in the episode) that Monk was framing her for the murder so as to force her (Linda) to sleep with him. There's a problem with that, however: Leland has known Monk for a long time and knows that 1. He does NOT like any form of physical (let alone sexual) contact and that 2. Monk is still devoted to his late wife, Trudy (just look at the 100th episode of Monk--Leland says that Monk has been a lot less happy since his wife was killed, for obvious reasons). I just don't think Leland wanted to accept it, until he HAD to...
Nailed it
And 3. that while he thought Monk was wrong about her being the killer, because he thought Monk was jealous of anyone else being in a happy relationship, he still knew Monk would not frame an innocent person. He knew Monk is honorable to the law and justice, even if he thought that Monk's issues were influencing him.
Also, Monk has too much dignity to steal his best friend's girl. He would never try to sleep with Stottlemeyer's partner, even if he wanted to. He CERTAINLY wouldn't go to that level with it. He's just not that type of person.
Very true when she said that he was like .........
yep, that's the moment when he knew
Ted Levine is such an under appreciated actor. He goes from a psychotic who skins women to this tough captain who is completely heart broken. His face shows all the heart break.

I think the reason the captain had so many bad relationships is because monk is right everyone deserves a Trudy. Who deserves one better than the captain
there's bad relationships and then there's dating a murderer
@@felixgonzales9786 lol your right. I meant it was his destiny to have a Trudy
@@wristdisabledwriter2893 but if you saw the end you know trudy also had her faults and kept stuff from monk, maybe she thought he wouldn't be able handle and since she found someone who actually loved her knowing her secret it would destroy her chance at happiness and would make monk much worse than he already is. the things is that monk knowing how smart is and how much he really loved her even if he found out or was told he would have move heaven and earth to keep her safe and would have reunited trudy and Molly Evans her supposed dead child.
@@world4saker I seen the ending. I don’t disagree about her faults. But everyone has faults. I think monk meant what Trudy represented not the exact Trudy. I mean he even said she snored. The captain got the Trudy he deserved just like monk did. I think that was destiny

Yeah, his wife leaving him was tragic, too, he loved her and was protective of her to a crazy degree, like when she got hurt.
Doesn't the average man spend at least two grand on an engagement ring, kind of odd for him to do that, I guess he didn't care about cashing it in.
While watching that episode, I actually went back to see that part and indeed the pen rolled and she stopped it. I don't think anyone would notice that except Monk.

If only Linda hadn't murdered her business partner...
But she doesn't love leland!!!
Poor Leland, he was so heartbroken.
Are you talking about Leland or Patrick?
I've had my heart broken more times than I care to admit
I can't help but feel that everyone was not only saddened by Linda's murder, but also disappointed in her. Like Stottelmeyer said, they could've had it all: love, happiness, even a family. And Linda practically threw it away by taking another innocent human life. She got too greedy in her career to realize it wasn't nearly as important as the future she and Stottelmeyer were about to have together.
Yeah, but besides being tragic Stottlemeyer was better off without her
@@sarahberkner I agree. At least he found real love with T.K. assuming things went well for them since the monk movie came out some time ago

What hits Leland more is how Monk was right after everything he told him, if i recall, in this episode, when Monk is trying to talk with the captain, Leland accuses Monk of wanting everybody to be miserable like him, and now he just looks at Monk silently cause despite what he might think of Adrian, Leland knows he was facing the reality.
That scene was brutal. Obviously he wasn't ready to apologize to Monk in that moment at the end of this scene, but I think he would have later, he said some very hurtful things alongside accusing him of having such bad character that he wouldn't want the Captain, his friend, to be happy.

I felt the captain's pain way harder than I should have. 😢
Notice how Stottlemeyer never lets go of his girlfriend and even drags her around the moment he heard the music coming from the rental trailer.
I think, in that moment, he put two and two together deep down and knew. So, he holds on to her so she doesn't try to make a run for it.
The fact that she turned off the camera and insisted that they immediately leave to go wherever probably clued him in already.
Though I'm sure Monk saying "I know how she did it" was the real moment- the Captain knows that whenever Monk says those words, he usually means it.
I’m pretty sure she couldn’t run for it in an actual police station surrounded by police officers.
@@CharlieAUS Then why would Stottlemeyer hold on to her so tightly?
@@craigcrisostomo9803 My interpretation:
Because you never hold on more tightly than just before you have to let go.
Stottlemeyer pretty much knew from the moment she told him that Monk tried to sexually assault her.
I feel so bad for the Captain :( at least he got lucky and ended up with TK
Everyone deserves a Trudy
Got burned by his wife, too, she divorced him, even though he loved her as much as Monk loved Trudy, he went nuts the episode where she was injured.
This is one of my favorite episodes. It showed the complexity and growth of Monk’s and the Captain’s relationship. Plus, it’s cool to rewatch to see when Monk 1st figured out she did it.

@@thedarkemissary Something the Captain didn't learn after his wife left him, he totally trashed Monk and said some very hurtful things to him. Hopefully after being burned a second time, he finally gets it.
Personally I felt they should have just let Leland have a happy relationship
I started bindge watching this show last month. Its genius. It makes you laugh but also a little sad at the same time. One of the best detective shows to date and head and shoulders over anything we have now.
3:50 the way she chokes up while repeating the words. The way she realizes how her entire plan came unraveled by something she could've prevented. The music changes too. You're obviously meant to feel bad for the captain but I genuinely feel bad for her. Even the great detective Monk would not have caught her if she had not made the tiniest mistake.
Feel bad for her?! She was a greedy psychopath with a total disregard for human life. The Captain dodged a bullet when Monk caught her.

I love how up until the hill reveal she thought Monk just beat her. She has an idea of how aware and smart he is and for a while thought he'd just figured it out through some clever way outside her means and expectations. But the "I parked on a hill" with such a sad expression because in reality she made a simple mistake.
I don't think she knew him that well because she lied about the fact he tried to blackmailed her
"It's a replica. It's a duplicate." Great writing.
Why?
What makes me sad is the way he held her hands up until the last possible second. As a cop he knew he had to let her go but as a man he still wanted to have as much contact as possible before she went away forever
I must've rewatched this entire series a couple times over the last decade and I have to admit, Leland is probably my favorite character now that I'm older. It's bad enough finding out your girlfriend is a cold-blooded murderer, but having this happen after years of a failing marriage, a bitter divorce and 2 sons who barely speak to him you can't blame him for how desperately he wanted a second chance and how close it came to blinding him from his better judgement.
Yes, and don't forget that he didn't trust his friend
When he says you parked on a hill I got goosebumps. One tiny little mistake in a genius plan
Almost the perfect murder.
Aren't they all until Monk comes on the scene!
He's laughter's answer to Columbo.
Great show!
Well, weeks ago I somewhere read that Peter Falk who played Columbo was considered for role Monk’s father Jack Monk Sr.

Plot twist: flashforward to 2020 where Disher, Monk, Natalie and Stottlemeyer talk via computers, during Covid Quarantine. "We're ALL Monk, now." 🤔
One of the toughest episodes to watch. The most brutal part is actually in the final scene on the beach, as Stottlemyer muses aloud about how he'll never know whether she truly loved him or if she was just using him as a means to an end.
I'd like to think it was probably both.
I couldn’t imagine his pain, he loved someone so much and her greed got to her and ruined her life and his hope for love. That just sucks
I really liked this show I can't believe one of the producers now hates it because they showed cops as good. They were plenty of corrupt cops in the show too it was not like they were saying all cops were good.
Yeah. Like their are good cops so i think it was nice seeing cops like stottlemyre but yes they did show plenty of corrupt cops

One of those episodes, where you truely get the Monk quote "It's a blessing and a curse". We had several episodes, where personal idols of some of the main characters or in this case a future possible wife got caught by Monk.
Ted Levine's acting is fantastic during the arrest, holding her with both crushed passion and professional tenacity, taking in one last moment that feels like love and bracing himself for heartbreak.
I love the look of complete disbelief and even heartbreak on her face that all it took to prove her guilt was: “I parked on a hill...”
this is such a good story with incredible actors. i loved them all. they were shining
Should have showed the part where the Captain ends up going on the vacation with Randy instead 😂
Such a great episode! I really felt for the captain. Glad he got a happy ending by the end of the series though!
This is why a friend like Adrian Monk would be the best. He never lies to his friends, never tries to betray anyone and hes the most organized. Name a better friend than Monk
Just a heads up, you misspelled "captain" in the title, even though capitan sounds cooler
Capitan Alameda 😃
Maybe he's espanish lol
I’ve been watching monk for about a few months now, and seeing captain S’s growth during the show both made me happy and heartbroken. He deserves so much more than any human being in the world. I’m so glad he has TK. Monk was right. Everyone needs a Trudy. Leland got himself one.
In rewatching the series I felt like Linda was around more than she was, she’s mostly just mentioned after her initial debut and then they make her a killer.
At the very least Season 8 awards him with a woman (that despite some issues surrounding the wedding due to a saboteur) that he gets to have a happy ending with. Also apparently he had another wife prior to Karen that only lasted less than a week before that got thrown out (according to Monk’s ill timed monologue during the third marriage’s bachelor party lol)
Probably a vegas wedding, while heavily drunk.
Yeah seemed like she was around longer. It's really cool though that they introduced her already before the episode when she ends up being a killer. She's almost like a new character rather than the usual thing where the killer is just introduced in the episode.
Criminal: Yes, I'm gonna get away with it.
Monk: Here's how it happen...
Criminal: 👀That's illegal.
The best part of this episode was when Linda was arrested and the Captain ended up taking Randy with him to Hawaii...I thought "how adorable" he was supposed to take his girlfriend, but took Disher instead. 😂😂😂
Well it's not like he had much choice. He was only friends with Monk, Randy and Natalie in the show.
He wasn't going to pick Monk due to his phobias and still being bitter about him exposing Linda for the murderer she was. He obviously wasn't going to pick Natalie because that would have been extremely awkward after everything. So, Randy was the best choice to pick. He may drive the Captain nuts with his nonsense, but you can tell Leland really has a close friendship with Randy. He's like his annoying little brother in a sense.
Poor captain first his wife now his girlfriend
Monk is a scary, scary man dude
The way he explains everything is so cold and terrifying, he brings killers, murderers, robbers to complete silence.
The most terrifying part is that he'll bring up ONE very minor mistake that'll end your whole life. Knowing one man caught you do ONE itty bitty mistake coust you your whole future.
The song Monk was playing sounded like a church song I had to sing called “How Great Thou Art” lol it was so weird hearing that in Hawaii music lol.
and Stottlemeyer lost his hope...
Temporarily.
Hope can be difficult to have. It actually takes strength to maintain.
"I'm 51 years old, she's the last chance I have" broke me 😔
The most loving and heartbreaking arrest.
There is nothing you can hide from mr monk
My family and I have been watching the Monk episodes - this is the saddest episode so far! Seems like none of the characters can catch a break when it comes to relationships.
You can hear the pain and heartbreak when the captain says "you can turn that off now".

The only time that Monk wished he was wrong
I felt so sorry for the captain, just when he found someone he thought he could spend the rest of his life with she went and did this leaving the captain a broken-hearted man. Then the following scene of him in the beach with Randy had me thinking wth?
Such a great show.
For someone who spent so long making sure everything in the fake room was perfect, she sure got sloppy about leaving evidence at the actual crime scene.
That was too painful. And all the officers there were fazed.
Originally, Sharona had all the crappy love interests. After firing her, I guess Leland had to take a few for the team.

@@9Kualalumpur yes. I think he's angry to Monk, deeply wounded to heart, but he knows too, that Monk is right and acted as a real friend, by telling the truth.
