Years ago, in a Chicago suburb a nut processing company used to drop the shells by the street in a big mound with a sign "Take what you need". They made great groundcover and fertilizer.
They also burn hot and heating fuel but smoke like crazy.

My parents used to love to go down to the southern States to buy big bags full of peanuts, but they were also very fond of sunflower seeds. I think the appeal was that it was all about eating, since you can get peanuts and sunflower seeds anywhere, in small packages with the shells removed, but it was more of a social thing, an activity over which a family can bond.

I lives in Gatesville, NC for 3 year 2009, 2010 and 2011 and at harvest time the air smelled so good. I miss it...
In Vanuatu (South Pacific Islands) at the local markets you could buy bunches of peanuts still on the bush that had been roasted in their shells over a fire, nicest peanuts I'd ever tasted straight out of the shell.

Never even occurred to me where peanuts came from.
I did not see the drying process or the salt and flavoring.
Nor did is see the peanuts on the ground, because not all
peanuts make it to the combine. I never saw
anyone call peanut plants trees before. Looked like you had
roasted peanuts among some of the other segments.
But over all, it was a great presentation.

Yeah, I remember back in elementary school, learning about George Washington Carver
and his research on the peanut . . . . . we also learned the peanut was grown from a plant not a tree . . . . . ( @ 0:35). I wonder if the factory shown here packages all of it's peanuts 'raw' ?The clear plastic 'consumer' containers are shown being filled, but never had been 'roasted'. Pretty sure I caught an image of the roasting station @ 5:02, not sure.

Recently Planters Cocktail peanuts does a terrible job of removing thin shell, open up a can and approximately 1/3 still have the thin shell.

I like this video. But it shows this particular peanut factory pays little attention to food safety. Like workers sorting groundnuts without gloves and a fly perching on groundnuts in one scene.
They are plants the produce the peanuts under the ground. that's how they are made!

Many errors in the narrative. The story line uses incorrect descriptive words, like this is a Junior High School video project by a kid whose dad works at a peanut mill. Peanuts don't grow on 'trees'. They are covered with a 'skin' not a second shell. I was a USDA peanut inspector in Georgia and Texas for several years in the '70s. The video of all the processes is pretty good, but the story line is feeble.
I love the flavor of the red skin but it seems that fewer than 4% of peanuts in a can have the skins intact. Have you ever heard of peanuts that keep their skins through the process?
I hope the peanut industry have implemented more advanced methods of quality control at the soil level, prior to planting the selected seeds.
