- Video footage taken in the week leading up to June 7th 1995 at Maynooth Railway Station in County Kildare. There are a variety of trains in operation including the commuter railcar service from Dublin, up and down passengers headed by 071 class locomotives which include nos, 078 and 082. The signalman in the video is John Sullivan, one of the nicest men you could meet, and June 7th was his last day at work, and handing the staff up to the driver of the down Sligo liner headed by 074, was his last ever such action. Irish Rail driver Nicky Moore also featurs on the down 082 and the up 078 after a crew change! You will also notice the damage to the cabin. The cabin suffered a fire a few days previously. Despite the extensive interior damage, the mechanical frame and staff instruments remained operational. Enjoy. E!
Thank you soo much for this video. I am Johns youngest son Michael and this has brought back lots of memories and not a few tears . As you say, he was a pure.gentleman and always happy and smiling. My mam missed him dreadfully when he passed. But she is with him now and they are re-united. thank you.
As a Maynooth local I'm just stunned how much our station has changed! I'd actually forgotten about that shabby little station house all together! The footbridge has been changed, the platforms extended, and some of the sidings removed. Seeing platform 2 so over grown is just weird, it's used so much today! The burn out signal box is sad, but at least it did get fixed up before it lost it's function.
I'm really loving these older vids - keep 'em coming!
Bart.
It's lovely to see my grandad on video, I have a few memories of sitting in the cabin with him.
Rebecca O'Sullivan hi! I’m so glad you got to see your grandad John. He was a fantastic man, with a great laugh and sense of humour. I spent many lovely hours with him in the cabin. And I have more videos!! Must dust them down and put them up!
I remember John when I was younger. He was a very kind and generous gentleman. The station back then had more personality as well, with the proper black and orange trains, freight trains, and the telegraph poles. All gone now :(
Yes, you are correct. It was John Sullivan. John is the only signalman who features in my videos. I knew John well, not just from the railways. He was one of the nicest men you could meet, and laughter was never far away when he was in full flow. He was a great man to travel also. John passed away not long after retiring from Maynooth
Its lovely to hear from you! I have just sent an e-mail to Michael (John's youngest son). I knew John from the signalmen in Enfield. Someone left something in Enfield one evening and I was asked to drop it in to Maynooth on the way back to Dublin. John was on duty in the cabin. We got chatting. We knew people in common. And that started it - I had many happy years of coming to Maynooth to sit and chat with John. A real gentleman!
A very full Sligo liner with the bitumen tar on the rear, lovely stuff thats the Maynooth I remember, John Sullivan never minded taking photos, good old days.
what a great video. Thankx alot for sharing :)
It is exactly how i remember from our childhood popping in to see my grandad at work. Good times. Love you grandad xxxxxxxxx
