The Wood in Winter, Flooded and Frozen

The village has a series of small wooded areas, which are low lying and often marshy. In the depths of winter the boggy ground often becomes saturated and the water level rises submerging the lower parts of the tree trunks. As the temperature drops the water begins to freeze turning the lively reflective surface into a dark motionless slick like layer. There’s just enough warmth in the low sunshine to thaw frost from the upper branches, causing meltwater from the high up twigs to drip and splash on me as I walk through the trees. There’s little movement in the wood as I pick my way between the waterlogged areas, flocks of Redwing and Fieldfare flit, hardly visible high up in the treetops and the occasional Blackbird bursts from the brambles clucking its high pitched alarm to warn of my unwelcome presence. Apart from a small group of Mallard ducks making their way over the ice the only other bird I see is a Grey Wagtail drinking from a break in the ice. This is a frozen temporary world that I’m passing through and only a day or two later the ice has gone and another storm blows in, throwing the trees about violently and adding yet more water to the flooded ground.
