How to shift a Spicer 16 speed

- How to use a Spicer ProShift transmission in my Kenworth .
It is a 16 speed with overdrive.
The 16 speed is similar to the 14 speed which is much more common, except the air-shift pattern is different.
The first 3 gears in the main box ( controlled with the gearstick ) each have 4 gears on the air shift ( the blue control on the gearstick ). This gives 12 gears.
The top 2 gears on the stick you only use 2 airshift positions , like on a 13 or 18 speed RoadRanger , so this gives 16 gears in total.
A compound shift is changing gears with the air-shift and main gearbox at the same time.
You don't need to use the clutch except when starting and when using the airshift in 1st gear in the main box.
All this info is easy for truck drivers who can operate a Road Ranger , which is the most common transmission in Australia. But it is a harder box to use than a Road Ranger. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
5 years ago I watched this video because I wanted to work as a driver of a dump truck, and that machine had this gearbox, so I learned here in 10 minutes, of course I approved the test and I got the job, thank you so much I little bit later LOL greetings from Mexico
When I was told "that truck in the corner of the yard is yours" and it was a spicer.. I had a lot of doubts about it, had other drivers (who had never used it) trying to tell me how to drive it. I got the old bloke in the yard (Usher the Crusher) to teach me and after about 2 minutes it was the easiest gearbox to use. To this day it was the only truck I drove with a Spicer (doing heavy float work mind you) but I would not ever hesitate to jump in a truck with a Spicer again. Great gearbox!!!
And people complain about how it's hard to drive a regular 5 speed
+Ryan Mr 1% Yeah, it makes a Eaton Fuller 18 speed look like an automatic!
Like Eaton Fuller Twinsplitter but more gears
Old school 15 speed.
I once drove a Mack with a 12 speed, I liked the way you air-shift forward to reverse without moving the gear lever.
V8 cat and a spicer. Trucking heaven. Five stick shifts beats stirring a road ranger round all day.
I recognize that air starter! Reminds me of the freightliner my father used for hazmat transport.
Man that CAT is singing..........love the sound
When i passed my test in 1985 i drove a B series with this gearbox, i remember crashing and crunching a few gears till i got use to it. I drove for Sarsons vinegar who was owned by Nestle at the time and we got new ERFs with the eaton twin splitter J255 YWT In my humble opinion the best manual gearbox ever . Nestle went on to build a central distribution centre in Leicestershire and they unfortunately made the Sarsons drivers redundant. Great job ,great time ,great memories.
Not the same transmission, twin splitter is not Spicer it is eaton
@@grumpystruckshop3807
I know ! i said i started my first job as a driver using a spicer gearbox that was in 1985 . After a few years we got new trucks that had a eaton twin splitter .
Great gearbox,drove a 95 T600 with 500 series 60 and 16 spd spicer for 5 years,best truck i've ever driven
mate i have to say that is without a doubt one of the best presented and most informative shifting videos on youtube. very well executed and also very well explained.
You're a legend mate, when I get back to Canada, I'm sourcing a 16 speed Spicer and fitting it in my Pete 352.
225 people aren't truck drivers, they're just guys that drive trucks!
Manual Shift or Nothing!
AMEN!!!
@goedeck1 Everything is in the one box on the 14, 16, 18 and 20 speed Spicers. Completely different to a Roadranger which has an auxiliary casing on the back of the box.
This is now officially my favourite video on CZcams. Great stuf Chris, and superb quality too. Many thanks.
Another great video! Another 5 *s
Really enjoying the HD too.
Keep 'em coming, I watch everyone you post.
Love that gearbox. Drove a international sline line with a 20 speed for a few years and loved it
Very interesting vid and a gorgeous truck! Thanks for posting.
Very hard to follow in my mind what ratios you are really doing at any one time , but I understand that you are mixing and matching according to what you judge are ideal for the weight and conditions. Something you cannot teach in one lesson!
Very interesting non the less for a total novice like me.
That V8 sounds so relaxed and unfussed. Something you need for a road train!!
Keep up the good work.
gm16v149: PLEASE DO CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG LOL
Although I'm a UK driver watching him change gears and my understanding of the box by his description & watching carefully this is how i'd put it in laymans terms.
2 = 1st on main box 2nd on airshift,
3 = (3rd on airshift)
5 compound shift (2nd on main box 1st on airshift)
7 (3rd on airshift)

13 compound shift (4th on main box, 3rd on airshift)
14 (4th on airshift)
15 compound shift (5th on main box, 3rd on airshift)
16 (4th on airshift)

drove a w900 out west with a 16 speed Spicer.. awesome gear box.. not every driver gets the hang of em..
great job buddy.... I LOVE this way to shift gears also !!!!! ;) best regards from Germany..... and all the best !!!
Nice vid mate.I remember many years ago I got to play with a spicer 14 speed.2 airshifts on 1,2,3 & 4 airshifts on 4,5.After a quick rundown I was off.Surprisingly I handled it okay although it caught me out a few times including one major time on the last steep hill before home.Went down a couple then missed it, tried to recover but lost it big time.Had to stop and find a low one and crawl over the top.Lucky no one else was around.Makes me laugh now but I was doing plenty of swearing back then.
I just started driving a dump truck as well. It has a 4 and 4. Not having driven this before I just took a guess at it and drove it like you show . My boss shifts it differently and it works for him. I have over 10 years driving OTR with several different transmission including the 13 speed which is my favorite.
Wow this is the first video I've seen with large screen crystal clear HD, nice!
That's some nice trucking there, Mate. Keep on truck'n...
It's a VDO cruise for mechanical truck engines. ECM with an electric motor control for the throttle ( which is an air throttle ).
Works very well.
Awesome video, I've only ever driven roadrangers but just looking at that i'd love to give one a go. Great work
Basically just in the gear ratios. A 20 speed is really only a 12 speed (I think) because there are some overlapping gears, the idea is to have 10 high or 10 low speeds depending on the terrain.
Thanks for posting.Got a '70 K125 335 w/ air 4x4 Spicer.Very similiar to your setup, only we drive from the other seat!!! Thanks for the driving tips as I am just starting to drive this thing around after installing the motor!!
Bloody hell, that’s an incredibly simple shift. If I ever drive trucks, I’m having one of these for sure.
What's not to like this video. Very easy to understand
you're a deadset champion mate. keep up the good work and keep that big cat thumpin away
Buddy....thanks for the entertaining videos. Love the V-8 sound and the instructional shifting video. i run a western star w/525 cat/18 spd and max weight of 66100kg's hauling tree length pine trees. Wish I had a V-8! Cheers from Canada
I love your KW. Awesome.
You drive bare foot man? Haha, good stuff. Ive been know to do that also!
The best shifting demo vid ive have seen on youtube!! Good on ya!
Greetings from Long Island, NY, your videos are very educating and entertaining!
I guess this road and the traffic would be a lot different to what you see in NY lol
Nice old banger by the way great videos.
I don't know why you people want to drive on the wrong side of the road but you are a great driver and thanks for the video!
Right hand drive is superior unless youre left handed
A good demonstration nicely done. I got myself a 1974 Kenworth and I'm working out my sequence in the gear changes. Too bad the rpm and speed meter aren't working I need to fix it asap. Cheers mate.
@cst20396 they thought their prius could do beter. this fella, im glad actually took the time to CLEARLY explain how to drive this unit. well doen sir
Thats the best "how to shift" vid clip on utube. Great work. I used to drive a 310hp mitsubishi fuso back in new zealand towing a 6 car trailer ten years ago. It had a 14 spd spicer box in it. One of the best trannies Ive ever driven once I mastered the shift pattern and getting the revs spot on. Driving a 2007 Mack Superliner now with a Mack 18 spd in it now. Wish it had a spicer in it..lol.
CAT engines... One of best musics for my ears.
very good vid mate nice start up
i love air starters that looks like it would be fun to drive stay safe
hosatosa,
I am going to have to agree! Love the growl of the 3408 in this truck!
Joe
I have worked as a trucker both un México and in the United States. In U.S.A. those transmissions are not known. In México all 14,16,18 and 20 speed are very popular.
great videos... greetings from Venezuela
Good video and what a pleasure to listen to an Aussie drawl after that American dude.. Thanks for the video..spot on
Exactly as in United States, yeah right.... I'm from mexico and I'm proud to have driven with this kind of transmission 14 and 16 shift, the best for me, but when i come to USA all those good moment go away, now 9 and 10 shift, with luck maybe 13, but now all those bigger companys, release the unit with automatic tranmission, that make me sick... Oh almost forgot, super 10, thats means super fool.... sorry guys, but it's the truth... I miss the best, 14, 16, 15 and 18, thanks for this video.!!
GREAT video!I just picked up an old Brockway with a Spicer air shift 5x4.I'm not sure what model trans.(truck isn't home yet)I can't wait to drive it!!!!Love the trucks of OZ also!
I was taught how to drive using a 5x4 by my father. We had some knock down, drag outs. When I perfected it he was impressed. I would rather drive a two stick than any other!!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
"Good Luck and Good Truckin' Tonight" --Dale Watson song.
thanks for the video. Love Slim Dusty songs :)
The eastern roadhouse in Coolgardie ,was closed for a while but has been reopened I saw when I was through there just after chrissy
I love this truck!!!
Don't no why I missed this before but thanks for making it, saves me making a spicer video. Most yanks don't even know what a spicer is so hopefully the've learnt something. I've driven a 12 and 29 speed before and found them easy to us and saves the arm a bit too :)
Wow interesting video
Great vid mate, Ive never come across one of these Spicers yet, very Interesing 5 stars from me.
Had a drive of a spicer recently. Had a 10 speed on highway pattern plus 4 deep reduction speeds.
Nice!
Could you do a review of your great kw?
Nice ole truck, I collect kenworths with 3408s and kta cummins! Gotta luv the 8 cylinder thump!
Great video.
I really like how this transmission operates.
I can see why you keep driving your old KW, why buy I new truck that's not as good as the old one. Have a good trip.
We get a lot better than 3 mpg, I get nearly 4 mpg with 2 x 45' flat tops at 79 tons gross. There's still quite a few Mack V8s over here still working, mainly Superliners and Titans which were very popular.
@MrAwesomeSkittles Well, what do you think a Kenworth is! It's an American truck!
Kenworth have a factory over here in Australia to make them for our conditions but they are an American truck.
if I ever make it to Australia I'll come visit you
If you can synchronise the gears without making any noise then you don't need the clutch. This only goes for a constant mesh box like Spicer or Mack or Roadranger. Takes practice.
It takes practice - I learned to drive on a (wait for it) Massey Ferguson tractor; I learned how to synchronise the gears - it had 12 continuous gears: 3 speed main; a range change to give 6 and a split to give you your 12 - 2 (main) and 5-6 (main had a bigger gap, so drop more revs. The range was a gear lever and the split was an hydraulically actuated clutch for overdrive and a sprag clutch for direct. The sprag clutch also meant that you could pull the tranny into neutral as soon as you dropped the revs - wait for it - then into the next gear...
Does this truck now have a 18spd roadanger box in it?
Yes, an Isri air seat and it is very comfortable
I use that box is slow to take off since they are many changes, but in slopes you prolong is a very good one since she maintains a greeting very well from Mexic
@ViktorDragmire Correct in the first part. Not sure about a twin stick, depends if it is a 5 x 4 or 4 x 3 or whatever.
Blast from the past with an air split ; not to mention the air start. Drove a couple many years ago (30-40) when I 400 hp was the dream motor . Once in 5th there was very little if any stick movement needed on the h/ways --- basically an auto for back then . There is also less rev drop (300) between gears when compared to the normal 15 speed roadranger that was really only a 12 speed at best .
When in 1st 2nd 3rd main box , I'm sure you can use the third/forth splitter , or even not use the splitter.
Pity they didn't become as popular as they were to drive ; apparently they failed more than the roadranger . Yep; I like them :)
Another interesting old system was the 16 Volvo
The parts have dried up and the Fuller transmissions are the industry norm these days.
is the brush gaurd in the front so if kangorus jump out in front of you
what is wrong with the ratch sound on the gearbox.i drive a 88 t650 with a 1214- 1414 spicer and it seems to ratch between top 3 .bottom 4. and up the the gear from bottom 4
good video mate... i was lost from the 4th split lol Roadranger is definitely an easier demon to master
Yeah good ,next time your in Toowoomba you can show me,I think I got most of it sorted though.can you operate it like a mack box,? Used to operate a ultra liner with a mack box in it,probably one of the best boss I have driven.
Amigo temgo unas caja dicen que es spicer de 18b y unos dicen que es de 16 pero la palanca es parecida a esta
thanks for sharing Glen, I thought a 14 sp.spicer just was a 7 sp.main box with
high and low splitter...
cheers Haustan
You can only use 3 and 4 on the airshift in the top 2 gears in the main box or you get expensive grinding noises
I've heard there's troubles shifting one of these compared to a twin stick. Have you seen any trouble shifting one of these where it sometimes just won't go in gear?
really want to learn to drive one of these.
Great video bud
sam baker It's got an 18 speed Roadranger in it now mate
Hi Chris, love ya work.
I was wondering with the spicer, just say you where in top (main) but 3rd in the splitter, and you had nearly at the crest of a hill but your gunna have to give it another gear, could you use 2nd on the splitter ( main in 5th) or do you have to compound shift back to 4th (main) and overdrive on the splitter
The 18 speed Eaton Roadranger is the most popular trans over here, and more of them are automated on the new trucks.
The Spicers are harder to use than R/Rs but it won't be long before new guys can't even use a manual Roadranger.
OK Is the stick running a primary transmission that is outputing to a secondary transmission that is controlled by the splitter? If so are they both using the same lubrication in one case or are they separate?
@bluedog1976 Don't forget this is a 16 speed, different shift pattern to the 14, 18 and 20 speeds.
Tranimissão power sfhit
4 marchas de serviços com 4 grupos de velcidades acionados por pacotes e discos ?
I guess they are similar but mine's got 4 gears on the airshift.
The last Mack I drove had reverse on the airshift which is a good idea.
the tricky part is that the 'main box' ratios are not evenly spaced ( except the 20 speed i think). Therefore you need different combinations of 'air splits' and main box shifts to get the desired drop in rpm for a given situation. The main shift knob also has a static metal knob, you know the position of the air splitter selector knob, by counting how many fingers you are from the static knob.
I’ve never heard of anything more than 18 speeds
@merrawindi Yep it's a 20 speed but it's only got 12 progressive gears. You start in bottom gear and use 4 splits then the next 4 gears on the lever you only use the top 2 splits. If you use 4 splits in the high gears you will damage it.
If the air shift is too slow I would take the easy way out and change the air regulator on the back of the box and if this doesn't work put a kit thru the air cylinders. They are a noisy box.
Just hook up the airline to a couple of tyres and charge the starter tank, easier than a flat battery.
Almost never happens anyway.
LoL the secret is counting fingers against the metal dummy tab on the air knob so u dont lose track of which range it is in. Also when moving the air button from 2 to 3 u have to let the revs drop to click one range and then rev it up a bit to get the second range to click in.
@monkeynuts530 Most times we use a loading ramp which are everywhere in the north of Australia but sometimes we use a big container fork or a crane if there is one handy.
JVC Everio GZ HD10 Hi-Definition hard drive with an external mic.
All my first movies were with an el-cheapo JVC which didn't come out all that clear.
where abouts in AU are you gm16v149 ?
can you skip gears in the aux box? like from 1st main & 1st aux to 1st main & 3rd aux in one shift?
@soulman888 I drive my own double roadtrain but I drove triples in the '80s. A good man can back a double roadtrain onto a third trailer but it takes a lot of practice..
Hey mate, thanks for the vid!
Do you drive doubles, triples or road trains? I'm interested to find out how accurate other truckies have gotten with backing a double road train (two B trailers and dolly) or even a triple (two A's and a B trailer) Just curious cos I know it can be done but am yet to see it in the flesh myself! I'd even be happy to pay someone a decent amount to practice/be taught...if you know of anyone.
Cheers
BS
I've added a few more details in "more info"
Yep, same here
Still keep my tarps on the trailers but hardly ever use them. Mainly do drilling and mining gear.........no tarps required !
@gm16v149 That would have been the triple countershaft 12 speed Mack transmission, right???
100% image quality, a great country, and good people *****
