  • Solo Sea Kayaking is dangerous. Solo Sea Kayaking in the winter time, in Maine, is incredibly dangerous. In this video, I explain the safety precautions I take, and what safety equipment is required. These are the steps I take for my own safety, but they are by no means instructions for any paddler to take to the seas solo.
There are Soloists in almost every sport, and Sea Kayaking is no different. Please do not try anything I do in my videos unless you are an experienced paddler with a full appreciation of the dangers, and adequately equipped for them.
I don’t think of everything, drop additional safety recommendations in the comments! Thanks.

Always good to leave a paddle plan with someone on land that knows what to do if you don’t return on time.

Yes! Good point, I forgot to include that. I go over everything with my parents before I leave.

    Nice I like it.
As for solo - I do a lot of solo paddling too. It does have its place in the sport. I think if you plan and prepare for it, it can be rewarding.

No big deal if experienced and geared up.

Curious for those overnighters, would you carry flares in case your coms fail? (Although an EPIRB is pretty bombproof...)
    Good summary!

With my PLB, VHF, and phone service, I wouldn’t consider flares absolutely critical. They would be an an added layer of safety., if all else fails. Something to consider for sure!
