I wouldn’t consider myself a bayonet collector, but more of a gun guy. Sometimes you become a bayonet enthusiast just by association. I found an absolutely pristine Krag Jørgensen bayonet dated 1898 at a gun show, with the sheath and belt clip intact. It’s not particularly unique as blades go, but the Krag is one of my favorite vintage weapons, so it’s my favorite bayonet!
The dagger blade bayonet for the FN49 rifle is really a nice bayonet. They are pretty hard to find. I like the Finnish bayonet for the Valmet AK rifle. It is a Puukko style bayonet. It's another one that's hard to find. They are always expensive on Ebay due to their scarcity.
My favorite bayonets are the ones that fit the rifles that I own: Swedish 1896 Mauser bayonet, German made Yataghan bayonet for the 1879 Argentine Remington Rolling Block rifle in .43 Spanish caliber, 1891 Argentine Mauser bayonets(1 with aluminum handle; 1 with brass handle), 1909 Argentine Mauser bayonet. I also have a pristine Argentine short sword/machete used by Artillery troops. It is not a bayonet, but it is a work of art.
I got into bayonets as a teenager when I couldn't get swords, I now have a small collection of both. My favourite bayonet was one of my first ones being a beautiful Portuguese sword bayonet. Unfortunately I donated it along with the rest of my first collection to the local museum when in a fit of madness I thought I'd stop collecting. I believe it was late 19th century but I can't remember its actual date. It was a fine elegant blade perfectly balanced in the hand. I'd replace it in an instant but have never seen another example. @@pointynotsharp8436 I've just found my old notes according to them it was a "Kropatchek Long Branch" dated 1886. My knowledge of bayonets is somewhat sketchy so I'm only guessing when it comes to "M1885" but the date similarity makes it seem likely. I regret donating it to the Launceston Museum back in 1986, it along with the similarly donated French Lebel are the two I have yet to replace. With the current costs I cannot see met way to adding to the collection for some time as I'm an early/sick retired teacher. But you never know, only a few years back I got a WWI Turkish long bayonet (blade 52cm long by 2cm) cheaply from a gun show and I have heard of there odd tip shop find so I live in hope. In the last two years I got rid of all my triples in order to buy a Tas marked Martini-Enfield 303 socket Bayonet used by the Tas. Vol. Infantry. It was at risk of going to America. Sorry to go on so but its not often I get to talk military let alone bayonets. Regards Keith
@@keithkennedy-tyson8578 that's the same as mine which is also marked 1886. That Turkish bayonet sounds like a great find, very difficult to find the full length ones. I've got access to the M1890, very interesting history associated with it
Hi I recently acquired a Remington 1917 (double hatch to handle). It has an unusual oval fitting approx 1" x 1 1/4" with a lug on the base that fits into the bayonet mortice. I've searched everywhere on line but cant find any reference to what it fits onto. The patina and exact fit shows it was purpose made for the bayonet. Can anyone tell me what its for.
Interesting, I haven't heard of anything matching that description. If you have instagram you can message me a photo. My only guess could be an adapter for using the bayonet as a radio earthing spike. But I really have no idea
Well I finally figured it out. The guy I bought the Remington off had it fitted on a carcano rifle by mistake and it was jammed on tight so we had to tap it off with a hammer. The fitting in question is the barrel band from the carcano which came off with the bayonet. My brother bought the rifle and only just noticed the band missing. What caused the confusion was the bayonet lug fitting exactly on the Remington ? Thanks for your help. @@pointynotsharp8436
