Tommy Cooper said shortly before his death "I was told I had to stop smoking or face the consequences... The writing was on the wall and they really spelled it out for me".
Sadly, the warning came too late for Tommy Cooper, the damage had been done and this great iconic legend of comedy passed away at the age of sixty-three, during a live broadcast to the nation from Her Majesty’s in London on the 15th of April 1984. Tommy Cooper died as he had lived - bringing happiness and making people laugh - even before he spoke a word - just the sight of Tommy Cooper walking on the stage would have people in hysterics!
His daughter Vicky was to say “He loved laughing. That’s all he wanted to do, make people laugh. He got such joy when people laughed”.
Please join me on this step back in time, as I visit Ocklynge Cemetery in Eastbourne with flowers to honour the memory of a wonderful comedian and a magical magician who had an air of childlike naivety, which gave his magic a beautiful and hilarious boost when he gave the impression of being surprised when a trick actually worked, and to Tommy Cooper’s full credit, he was a comedian that never cracked a crude joke - an all-round perfect family entertainer, captivating every age group.
This video is a short walk through Tommy Cooper's life - from his beginnings to the sad end on that stage in London - however, there are no pictures of his final moments or footage as I personally find it too distressing to watch and it’s not something I wanted to include in this video.

Thank you for making this film. I visited a barber in Chiswick by chance in the early 1980s, and heard Tommy was a regular customer. The barber told me what a wonderful man Tommy was in real life too. He's always made me laugh down all these years. By the by, the typically snooty BBC reaction to young Tommy says a lot about why I have never liked the BBC. It's wonderful that Tommy's biggest television successes seem to have been with ATV. Poetic justice!
When I lived in Chiswick back in the 70s I was always hoping to see Tommy 🤭 never did though! But…. I did see Jonathan Cohen from Play Away lol I think Tommy Cooper was one of the best - funny and so lovable! ❤️
Thank you for this tribute. I am John Cooper, nephew of Toomy Cooper, son of David & Zena Cooper. I get alot of pleasure learning more about my uncles career as I only knew him as my uncle. My wife and I would visit Tommy and Gwen in Chiswick and have many memories of our time together. My Gran, in Southampton was where we spent all our Christmas's together and often Easter. Since My Gran died it seems to have been an avalanche of deaths in the family. Tommy of course, then my cousin Thomas. This was then followed by my father David and more recently my sister Sabrina who was murdered in Eastbourne last year. I moved out of the UK many years ago and have been living in Cape Town, South Africa where I formed the Jonny Cooper Orchestra and also the Glenn Miller Orchestra SA. I suppose entertainment is in the family genes. I am very proud to be related to Tommy for all the obvious reasons but also simply because he was my uncle.

Hi Jonny. I knew Sabrina through business in the early 80s. I was working as a Sales manager for a swimwear/dancewear company and Sabrina was the buyer for the dancewear section of your father’s Magic shop in Slough. Sabrina left a good impression on me, professional, warm and funny. Wasn’t aware of the tragedy, very sorry to hear that.

He truly was - I think many people feel Tommy was like a member of their own family - especially having grown up watching him - he was such a lovely entertainer ❤️🥰 someone all the family could watch together xx
We used to be helpless with laughter in our house when Tommy was on tv performing. I enjoyed listening about his life.
I came home from the pub the night he died on stage, to hear my dad saying, "Tommy Cooper has died live on stage and I was recording it (on VHS). Do you want to watch?" Subtlety was not my dad's strong point. I saw the report on the tv news but did not did see the actual clip until many years later thanks to the internet. It was a very sad sight to see him collapsing and hear the audience roaring with laughter unaware of the seriousness of what was happening in front of them. But I suspect Tommy would have loved it, if he knew he would be going out that way. One of the funniest people on tv ever. RIP Tommy and thanks for (and still giving me) loads of laughs

Probably the most famous catchphrase in the world. A great man, an important part of my childhood, sadly missed. I remember my friends running up to me telling me he had died on TV.
Yes!!! If you say ‘Just Like That’ I think most people identify it with Tommy! ❤️ His death was truly a very sad event ❤️
My dad, during time in the service, caught Tommy's acts whenever he could and often said that Tommy was in fact a very accomplished magician.
Yes!!! The fun part of his act was seeing him get it all ‘wrong’ and then the wonderful surprised look in his face when he performed a trick perfectly 🤭 he was an expert! ❤️

Tommy Cooper's book "Just Like That" was first published in 1975. I bought a copy and have treasured it all these years. There have been several editions of the book and is still available at a inexpensive nominal price. Edition one though is becoming a collector's item. Always loved the Cooper humour, especially as Tommy loved the horses too. He always said, "I backed a horse today at 20 to 1. It came in at half past four!" RIP Tommy. Thanks for the video upload. 🌙🌟

Thank you so much for sharing about my favourite all time comedian. Tragically I watched his demise on TV. People laughed as they thought it was part of the act. It was, of course, not. But even as he died he touched the hearts of people with laughter. Unique experience. May God bless him.

In 1971 Tommy Cooper and his wife came into a gift shop I was working in in Jersey
He bought several items and his wife negotiated a discount with the owner ,she seemed quite business minded and outgoing ,Tommy was very pleasant but seemed shy .You could tell she was the boss
They gave us all pens which had ‘ I stole this from Tommy Cooper ‘ written on .
I was 16 and had grown up watching Tommy Cooper in tv and it was quite an event in my young life to be serving a ‘star’

I can remember that show when Tommy sadly died but he left this world hearing what he loved to hear the sound of great laughter. We will never have such a great man again thanks for another great video

Some of the funniest comedians are some of the most intense people. Tommy loved making people laugh but hated being laughed at when not performing, even if the laughter was affectionate. Eric Morecambe was scared that if he stopped joking he'd never start again, he always carried a newspaper clipping of the first Morecambe & Wise TV show which said "Television is the box Morecambe & Wise were buried in". He actually spoke about Tommy just before he himself walked off stage and collapsed. Thank you for this lovely tribute, and thank you for not including stills of the final performance, I know he left them laughing but it's still an unsettling sight 😟 The grave may be showing its age, but Tommys comedy, as with Morecambe & Wise, is timeless 💕

Tommy was a very amazing comical magician. My whole family have very fond memories of him and his tricks. When one of my brothers got married he and his wife had a very quiet reception until I presented them both with fez’s and our father did the bottle, glass, bottle trick. Only my family and my brother got it!

That was a lovely tribute I heard a story that one Christmas Tommy was in London doing some Las minute shopping but the traffic and people had come to a standstill because he was joking about running in and out of the shops and he had someone in a car with him so as he was bringing out his shopping he was chucking it into the car then onto the next shop It caused absolute mayhem but no one minded as it was Tommy Cooper and the people loved him I remember that last show he did 1984 and I was doing my mocks everyone at school was talking about how they though Tommy was fooling around Then the news gave us the sad ending after the programme finished We are all unique in our own little way But Tommy Cooper was just unique Wonderful guy still makes me smile now lol 😁

Hi, when I was researching Tommy's grave, I contacted the cemetery, and they said that no ashes were put in this family grave, so his name is there as a cenataph only. A lovely tribute all the same.
Ahhhh! I did wonder as I mention in the video - I’d always understood that he had been cremated at Mortlake and scattered among his favourite flowers at home - thank you so much for this information! ❤️
@BeautifulBadandBizarre It's still possible and I would like to believe a part of him is there. I'm not trying to appear morbid but have you ever seen how much human remains remain after cremation? It's quite a lot so it's entirely possible that Tommy is in two places.
My wife decided along with her father that her mother's ashes would be secretly interred in her own mothers grave. They underestimated how much there was so they buried some in the grave and the rest is in a quality street tin in out meter cupboard!!!!!!

I never saw Tommy in the TV Palladium act the night he died, my mother did however.
It wasn't until a few years ago through the internet that I saw his last act in the Palladium.
His comedy was at the peak of what was around when I saw him on TV in the 70's.
People even today still impersonate him, "Just like that, not like this, like that" 😂
His stage baffoonery, height, large feet, and constant smile made him what he was.
A comedy legend indeed....sadly missed...😥
One joke I remember him telling on his TV show was....
"I cleaned the attic out the other day with the wife, dirty, filthy, covered in cobwebs......but she's good to the kids" 😂

And I hated the biopic they did on him - it was so untrue and unfair - but he did so much during his life I just didn’t know where to start and there was so much I just couldn’t get in! I know what you mean - I think some of you’re so welcome! I think sometimes the most tragic stories can also be inspirational - for me the way Diana Dors dealt with tragedies in her life for example is amazing - she was so courageous - I feel there is always something to learn from people the people I feature ❤️

There are few comics that stand out at being top of their chosen profession. Tommy did this effortlessly. A checkered personal life but he came so alive on stage. I watched his last performance and can remember being really worried when they went into a break that the worst had happened, unfortunately this was the case. Saying that truly believe he was happy right up the the very end as its the way I think he would have wanted to go. RIP to a comedy genius. Amazing clip as always shar. 👌 😎❤❤❤

Thankyou for paying this tribute to his life, I was 12 years old and still remember watching that show with my parents, it was probably one of the first times I experienced the loss of someone that meant a lot to me even though I did not know them personally ❤️
Tommy was a good comedian and funny in his own way how he told it smoking is a curse I thank God I never started it, but the air we breathe could be as bad in many ways
He was! I’ve never been a smoker myself - I think that’s thanks to my doctor I had as a child who told me if I started smoking it would kill me 😱 (I have asthma) I was about 8 I think and I had no thoughts of smoking at time - but that certainly prevented me from taking up the habit when I got older 😬

1968... I'm an electrical apprentice... living in south London and working at Sloughs, (gone now), dog track. Went for a walk, down the high street... on the right hand side there was a magic shop, (just like THAT), and so, I went in, as I'm always a practical joker... and who was THERE? YEP, it was Tommy! I said, "ah, you're Tommy Cooper!" and he replied... haha, "I'm NOT Tommy Cooper... I'm iz twin bruvver!" Love him!

He said he, and Tommy, were on the underground when a beggar approached, with a dog under his arm, asking for money as he was hungry... Bob recalled what Tommy then said. Tommy said, to the beggar... who said he was hungry, "EAT YOUR DOG!" Haha, bit cruel but, a bit funny, too!
A naturally funny guy he made you laugh just walking into the room.sadly I was watching the live show when he collapsed on stage at first we all thought it was part of his act only to be told later he’d had a heart attack.a great loss to the entertainment industry sadly missed I think you need to be of a certain age to appreciate his brand of humour RIP big man.

Tommy looked very fetching in a fez & I am glad Tommy Jr was present the night he died in that performance. It is also sad poor six-year-old Tam never got to know Tommy Jr., who only lived 32 years. I really, REALLY, enjoyed all of the photographs you included in this video. It was a treasure trove. It also stunned me a bit to see a very young Benny Hill looking back from my screen!! Nice work.

It was great to see a life story of my parents favourite comedian of the time. They spoke of him a lot and I have seen many of his shoes . He was a very funny man and to date there has been nobody else like him.

I was once a full time musician .I had a gig in a golf club in berks,I believe. 7 days after Tommy passed away,his brother Dave walked in.Good grief....spitting image.I was covered in goosebumps!!
I can imagine that must have been quite a shock! Their mothers genes were strong - Tommy was the image of her! Thank you for sharing this memory ❤️
I was resident with other musicians at a very famous cabaret venue in Luton in 1974,where you would have the likes of Des o connor, Bob Monkhouse,Max Bygraves,the Stylistics,etc,etc for 7 nights each.Tommy Cooper did a week there too.A white wooden free standing garden gate was placed side-on, on the stage.He was introduced, lights down.Nothing.......for a couple of minutes.Tommy is backstage with a radio mike.You hear a toilet flush,Tommy shouts "get me out".The audience fall about while he bangs on the door.He comes out to a standing ovation. Funny man.A one off.

That was a very interesting upload. Thank you so much. As a teenager I lived in Shirley in Southampton. Tommy Cooper’s mum had a little shop selling, as far as I recall, ladies’ clothes and doing alterations. The premises were at 124 Shirley Road. It looks as though it’s now a fish and chip shop. I don’t know why she had a business there because they lived across the River Test at Langley which is quite a distance. Her other son ran a shoe shop in Holbury also across the river. Your upload also mentioned Benny Hill who was another Sotonian. His mum lived just around the corner from us and I often saw Benny there. He’s buried in Southampton’s Hollybrook Cemetery. Thank you once again.

She did alterations and even sold bits of jewellery - I don’t know how true it is but apparently she never changed the displays and they got very dusty 🤭 I’m in Portsmouth and Southampton quite a bit - I’ve passed that shop and never realised! Now Benny Hill… another BIG love of mine - and the amazing and gorgeous ‘Flanagan’ of Kray fame was one of his ‘girls’ watch this space 🤣🤣🤭 xxxx
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre it’s obviously a few years ago now and memories can play tricks, but I remember the sign above the shop which said ‘G. Cooper’ and it did look a bit faded, but there were a few other long established businesses like that in Shirley. Benny Hill attended Richard Taunton Grammar School which was in Highfield, Southampton. I went there in the 1970s when it was a VI Form College. Another old boy of Taunton’s was John Stonehouse. I remember his name being removed from the honours board!

Ah! I never knew Tommy worked in Hythe in his youth. I visited an Army Uncle/Aunt stationed down there in the army houses in the mid 1970's a few times for summer holidays. My Scottish mum used to drive us all the way down from South Yorkshire. I still have fond memories of my times down there.
Thats a long journey! We lived in London in the 70s and we went to Devon on holidays - always seemed to take forever to get there - feels much quicker these days! ❤️❤️❤️

A very enjoyable video. I can't say that I was ever a big fan of Tommy Cooper, but growing up in 60s and 70s, he was on telly a lot so I got to see him many times. I used to watch Live from Her Majesty's when it was on and was watching the show when Tommy died. It was sad, but as was said in the video, it would probably be the way he would have wanted to go, doing the thing loved, although he was relatively young which was a shame.

But, thank you so much keeping the memory of one of our most treasured entertainers..

It’s difficult with the graves - I think graves are important to so many people when their loved ones pass away - and they will lovingly care for them - but as the people that were close to them also pass away - it can often mean the graves stop getting the same level of care - if that makes sense xxxx

I rarely comment on what I see on CZcams but I absolutely love the videos you post, because they are about all of the British actors and comedians that used to make me cry with laughter when i was younger. I was a huge fan of The Goons and Kenneth Horne on the radio as well.....*these are my cowhands, .... cow feet.......etc"! Not what younger people would like, they seem to have a different sense of humour these days, but that's ok of course. I know that I enjoyed these entertainers and, I'm also glad I'm at where I am and feel sorry my grandchildren are stuck with what they have these days...... thank you so much for what you take the time to do, its very special

Lovely stuff. Thanks. Hearing stories about Tommy from the likes of Eric Sykes, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers had me rolling on the floor. Tommy (A notorious scrooge), Taxi Drivers and the promise of a Tip was by far my favourite tale.
Breakfast, dry cornflakes and a briefly laughing barman is among my second. As for loading furniture into his van... nope, I won't spoil the ending.
