- After much soul searching, went for the HTP Invertig 221 AC/DC.
These are my first impressions. Spoiler Alert: it doesn't have tires.

If every big budget movie that came out were as committed to "Show don't tell" as Tony, we'd have a tougher time picking Oscar winners. Seriously Tony, I think it's clear you'd be a great guy to have in the shop but I'm not sure you get enough appreciation for the quality of the videos you put out from a filmmaking and educational standpoint. Keep it up man!
Thanks!
nebnoswel Agreed! The quality/quantity of information, honesty and video production is phenomenal. I'd pay for a "Make Something with Tony" instructional video series.
Don't forget the puns. XD
You are nuts if you think WE pick the Oscar winners.
The pure video and editing effort for a crafts and fab channel is perhaps only rivaled by ClickSpring. I love Chris' videos but they just don't have the raw entertainment value that Tony's have.
I just want to say, as a retired TV news video editor, that your videos are excellent and I really appreciate the work you put in making them. Keep up the good work!!!!
lol the AC at the end had me xP
I love his humor.
It went over my head until I read your comment. (I'm feeling stew-pid.)
Same here :D
Indeed.
Ah damn, I didn't even get that one until reading this comment xD
The deadpan "I like my welders like I like my women . With a pulse." had me spraying a mouthful of coffee in the general direction of my notebook. Curse you. 😄
damn. your videos are truly the best. they are entertaining, very well edited, the camera is allways well positioned, the mic is used properly, not too loud not to silent, nu fuzzy sounds, you know what you are doing and are commenting it properly and humorously. please keep this up. qzality over quantity. yours truly, Kai from Germany
Thank you!
What he said.
Well said, Kai.
+1
Agree 100% !!
Moin
Dear Tony, you are creating 100% solid gold memories for your young fella.
"I haven't even scratched the surface on this welder"
**oh shoot**
Now you have the time machine, surely you can just send this back to young tony and save all of the grief with the other tig
The sense of humor in these is great.
So that's what the AC button is for. Cool!
Erring on the side of caution here..but AC is for welding aluminium ;)
RJ T or magnesium
Thank you. Getting an honest review is priceless.
Thanks Tony! After watching this video, I listened after that machine. I am proud to say that, in the middle of a project, my 62 year old tig welder died so I looked on the internet and found a HTP221 with a water cooler and some other swag for a price I could live with so long story short, I own and love this welder now. Thanks you!
I am young guy from germany who starts Learning anything about "crafting your own stuff by hand " and I can't explain in words how happy i am to find such an insane cool channel like this one :-)
i just have the feeling that someone is going to attempt sharpening a tungsted bit on a pencil sharpener
I'm that type of someone :(
pends on the sharpener ;)
Its pretty cool to do that. You put diamond dust on the bottom of the blade. Than you spin the tungsten the other way.
so dumb, you're supposed to avoid radial grinding lines.
Yep, I tried...didn’t end well...
I love the smell of a new welder in the morning. I can still remember the excitement of receiving my very first welder that wasn't used and busted up. I still have and use my first everlast welder. You never forget your first
About a year ago I bent over and spent some bucks on this exact machine along with the water cooler, cart, and an air cooled torch. It works flawlessly and I cant say anything bad about it! on top of that the distributor here in the US "usa weld" is fantastic to work with. I had a problem with a bad regulator off of an old welder and thought it was a problem with the machine. they were going to send me a new solenoid at no cost until we found the problem. you might feel the sting paying for one of these but its way better than the sting of having no customer service with any of the throw away Chinese machines! I had a problem with my first cheap tig machine and when I tried to get some help the response I got was that its basically disposable!
anyway these are made in Italy by a company called Stel. I'm glad to see you have such good taste Tony!
Same here. Wouldn't trade mine for anything. On my 2nd bottle of argon, I got ahold of some bad gas (thanks airgas) and Jeff offered to send me a new machine that day if it wasnt the gas! He worked with me on the phone for an hour. He was right, as rare as it is, I did get ahold of some screwy argon. That's a company that stands behind what they sell. I'm a believer, next up for me is the ProPulse mig. I can't wait!
worldtraveler Pro Pulse 200 is insane I love mine, my 221 is on its way
Just ordered one today and can't wait to get it! Thanks for the interesting review! I especially like your spot test making the ladder.
Another great video, Tony. I always look forward to your next installment, and I'm never disappointed. The editing, the commentary. All great stuff. Keep up the good work!
I just found your channel, I gotta say, as much as I can't watch one of AvE video from one end to the other, is hard to stop watching yours.
5:27 that was VERY sneaky. nice job, TOT.
Hi Tony, I love watching your vids more so when I see your son joining in. I think its cool to see a Father Son bonding like that in the shed. I love it when mine comes to work and does some hours helping around the shop. Keep up the great work, oh and love the new A/C system *cough* Tig I mean ;)
This is my second time watching this video. The first time I gave it a thumbs down because I was jealous and bitter that you had this welder and I didnt. I just ordered one of these so figured i would watch it again and try to learn something and prove that as long as i get my way I am not bitter or jealous of others. :)
Well then fuck you for having a plasma table lol. I know what u mean lol
Hes the best man!!
Oh, my good !. You , all mighty. You keep me every day coming back to see your videos for about a year and a half, and you keep me surprising, once and again !!!!. Now, I'm starting to open the flow to my Argon tank, come back to see your guidelines, and you keep me starting the screen for hours !!!!!!. You are AWESOME!!!!. Thanks for your lessons y your amazing humor !!!!. Pablo from Argentina !
Your videos seriously tick all of the boxes of what makes a great video. Great editing, very good audio and video quality, educational content and humor.
Just wanted to thank you after a couple of months of watching.
Thanks!
The AC joke at the end was hilarious! :D:D
kid gets a gocart, dad gets a TIG...all is right in the world. : )
"That Go Cart cost me my TIG machine!" "Ok Honey go buy a new one." Who's got who wrapped around a finger? Tony! Tony!...
😂😂😂😂
Just bought this welder and it was reviews like this that really helped me to place the order! No I didnt want to spend this much, but price and value are two very different things. Ive learned that difference by wasting money trying to spend less!
as the manual with this machine is more of a "quick start" guide and I am a novice TIG welder, I'm very anxious to see some follow up videos!!!!
Thanks for taking the time and putting in the effort to make this video!
Im sure HTP thanks you too!
I am a non machinist and non welder and had to go look up what TIG welding is, and seeing that video helped me understand this welder. This looks like a heck of a machine, wish I had taken metal shop as a high school student. Instead I did wood shop and have spent over 50 years making sawdust and ultimately furniture. But I still enjoy seeing knowledgeable and talent people working with metal. Great video, great channel.
thanks Dan!
"Honey, I had to buy a new welder to finish building Juniors new go kart, I mean science project for school!" Good video, pricey but nice machine, I've used a few older HTP machines, great stuff.
AT 5:27 the welder is saying to subscribe
Not too bright doctor 🤣🤣🤣
The kitten meow when you pushed the old one off!!! I usually get a bit of a laugh here, but that one literally brought tears to my eyes. You had to see part 2 of the problems with the old welder to get it.
I made the same choice a couple years ago and am very pleased with the HTP. I liked the fact that the same model has been around for years without a single negative review. I opted for the air cooled torch as I use it mostly for thin material. It's sooo quiet which does make it easier to concentrate and be creative. The interface is "different", but very easy to use and remember. The memory storage is handy when having to switch setups constantly on a project.
I almost got that welder. It was between the Invertig 221 and the Razorweld 200 AC/DC. I ended up with the Razorweld because their Kent, WA distribution center is a 20 minute drive away. I was able to test drive both the machine and the employee knowledge level before I put my money down and I was impressed. Then the Razorweld went on sale and that sealed the deal. It does not have as many options as the 221 but for the $ savings I can live with it.
PS: I also really liked Matt Pratt's tear down of the 221 and am really happy you gave him a shout out.
"Will it blend"? These videos are CZcams gold.
I like the way you go through things. Edu with a bit of humor and sarcasm. Gotta love it :)
I guess it's the scientist in me, but I was hoping to see how this welder performed on the 'scope compared to the old one. At the very least you might want to put it on there just to set your baseline for future diagnostics.
all in good time my dear Mr. Pfadt. *evil laugh*
that would be a technologist not science
bring back the karate chop steel cutting
the karate chop was excellent and probably my favorite :D
I'm trying to find that clip again, which video was it?
Yet another video that hits it out of the park.
I've got to say, your video style is an absolute breath of fresh air. I appreciate your sense of humor and the streamlined efficiency of your productions. Glad I stumbled on to you. (don't recall how that happened... )
Thanks for sharing.
Steve
I've been subscribed for a while and have never commented.........yet.
All I can say is that you did a great job on the video and that looks to be one hell of a machine!
I have a Lincoln square wave 255 that I purchased back in 1996 that has all the same features that your new tig has, but mine has a lift eye (300 pounds) and is the size of a small, short chest freezer. Man has technology changed!
That HTP is the size of a suitcase generator and about the same weight. AMAZING!
Water cooled too! WOW!
Back to watching the video....
So glad i ran across this video! I just went through the puling my hair out for a month trying to decide what machine to buy, and I bought the 221 air cooled single voltage. I haven't even clicked it on yet! Need to do some quick wiring in the shop to get going!
I may fall into the hobby bracket, but I'm not getting any younger and my eyes aren't getting any better!
Really appreciate you taking the time to make this, and all of your videos and look forward to your future videos on this machine!
Informative and entertaining as always, cant wait for more Kart vids. Things sure have changed over the decades, back in the day a home made go kart did not involve anything close to a Tig welder, and certainly nothing with an integrated chip in it. It was arc or gas if you were lucky enough to have a metal frame at all. Briggs or (shudder) Tecumseh engines or maybe an old Clinton - (yes im old-57) and aTecumseh engine would throw a rod just about on startup. I even remember a few old cast iron Briggs motors we came up with from old tillers, we used what ever we could find. I do recall an old Wisconsin 8HP military engine being crammed onto an old mini-bike with no clutch to fit the 1" crankshaft - push and go and pray-lol Your son is a lucky guy to have a dad who is teaching him to work on things and to have such technology built into his kart.
Really enjoyed that, Tony. I picked up this same welder about 3 years ago, with the water cooler, and it has been fantastic....a great value. It's been great at everything I throw at it, from super thin chromoly tubing (bike frames) to 1" thick steel, 1/2" aluminum, etc. I think you'll be pleased. Have fun!
Based on your commentary, I purchased the HTP-221 because (as the Chick in the hair dye commercial said "Because, I'm worth it") I have to admit, since not having welded in the last about 40 years, this thing is absolutely AMAZING. My beginning TIG welds were worlds above my old stick welds from years, and years ago. On top of that, I hate CRAPPY tools. This welder is TOPS.
And, my wife has no idea that I bought it. HA !!
Matt does a really nice in-depth review of the Documentation and general Design & Build quality
The king of dad jokes, puns and shenanigans.
I love how tony used the go kart as an excuse to buy a new tig welder lol so much for I'm going to build it with what I have laying around. Love it buddy keep them coming
Alright New TIG! I'm glad you had the multi meter out for our arrival. I was extremely curious, but didn't want to inconvenience you.
This Old Tony, you are the best! Your videos are very entertaining and very informative at the same time, and that is pure gold! I get to learn very cool stuff and with a bonus of good humor. Thanks for sharing this content.
excellent choice Tony! I feel it is the best machine going in the 200amp range! All I can say is individual AC amplitude adjustment changed my life!
It always tickles my OCD when something that, say, produces 220 amps is called the "221"
I'm looking at you, Makers Mark 46 (47% ABV)
Defnotdemas no lol won’t redesign for a long time
I own the esab miniarc 161 Lts... 160 amps. I feel your pain.
I just bought my first welder it's supposed to arrive today. It's a 140 Amp DC stick welder I got for 100 dollars off of ebay new. We will see how it works it looks pretty nice for the price. I also got a auto dimming welding helmet for 20 dollars shipped which is crazy to me but I already got it and tested it and it works and it even has sensitivity and delay settings and a solar panel. Keep up the good videos. I might do a quick welder review when I get mine so others can see just what 100 bucks can get you. It's nice because I don't have to pay to fill bottles and with the different welding sticks you can get you can have some versatility in how you weld. Like a poor man's tig. I didn't get a MIG because AvE told me not to in his which welder to buy video.
nice! if you do a video put a link here, would love to see it. PS you can add a "scratch start tig kit" and get into DC tig with a DC stick welder. Warning: that's how I started and it's all downhill from here. ;)
Congratulations one the new toy Tony.
As always a good mix of humor and good information.
Thanks!
I have no experience or near-term interest in welding, but I know that your videos will be entertaining. I was not disappointed. I think I accidentally learned something though. Thanks.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video and you kept the smile on my dial all the way thru, thanks dude.
The master of dad jokes
I have the same machine, use it all the time. The customer service from HTP is excellent too. You mentioned 999 pps, that's only on DC. AC is something around 10 pps or something like that. Great machine.
Ryan Jones do you find 10pps on ac is enough ?
always a pleasure to watch these videos. i learn a lot and laugh even more. thank you for the little jokes here and there. pay attention to your videos and you get rewarded. lovely.
so as with most of Tony's videos, I found this quite fun to watch, and it even made me think, hey, maybe I can afford one of these, and say goodbye to my ancient abom sized airco heliarc welder. but then I checked the price. best price I've found online is $2495. I get that it's a great welder, and I get that higher quality costs more, but from my "guy in his basement" point of view", I just can't justify dumping over 2k in a welder for myself. I'm thinking I'll just have to live with my ancient airco. besides, nothing beats having a cooling fan the size of a C-131 prop, and a high frequency spark gap that sounds like you are trapped inside a gigantic game of operation everytime it you step on the pedal, to make you feel alive.
Wanna bet? Be inside a metal tube and find out the rubber hose connecting gas to nozzle is live at 80V. UL approved electrical tape fixed that, I wanted to fix the jerk that designed it.
Great video, Tony. I've never even welded so far, but the way you present these things is very satisfying to watch. Cheers!
Thanks Adrian!
You can call me AL! LOVE IT!
Oh I do enjoy your humor! Never change Tony!
I'd like two things, first to be able to Tig weld and then a Hf start Tig welder like this one ;-) Entertaining and informative as usual Tony!
Not a welder myself but if I were I'd probably do the same thing and look/watch/read as much as I can first. Very interesting video too
Your videos make me happy
The most important question when considering a TIG machine, imo, apart from duty cycle and amperage is 'Am I going to weld aluminium or not?'. Ofc, this is from a hobby perspective, but needing AC will thoroughly bump up the price range, so especially when you're on a budget, the answer to this question can mean the difference between a good DC machine, or a questionable AC/DC one.
The 220/221 was my first choice 3 years ago and it still is. You have total control on the length and height of the square above and below the line. I didn't have the extra $ and I needed a plasma so I got a combo machine
I have a synchrowave 250. What a beast. Your new welder takes up much less space. Nice.
I spent a little time on a 250, I think it was a 250 anyway.. like a small fridge on wheels? :) I remember that thing packing quite the punch. I was still green then and easily frightened.
I have the same welder... It's fantastic. USA Weld was fantastic as well.
Um, Clickspring IS the only thing on the internet with no bad reviews. And you, for that matter
Clickspring's work and video is amazing. I feel guilty for even mentioning it, but I don't like clickspring's accent. That's why I like This Old Tony. TOT is like CS + jokes - OZ
With ClickSpring, I think it's about granular detail and video composition as much as it is the project itself. That kind of thing takes time. My two cents on the matter.
And finally, master craftsmanship clickspringers is arrived. I learned from him, how to be a patient man in my fast life.
220, 221, whatever it takes.
haha. indeed.
Jeff Voight Damnit, I was going to make that joke! You win, Sir. You win.
Yeah, was expecting that in the video too.
Mr. Mom
I always enjoy watching your videos Tony. You combine a great blend of quality content and humor. Keep it up!
Boy do I love this old Tony!!!
Congrats Tony! Thanks for the show and tell on a Nice tool and showing off with the razor blades...Yup think you need more practice. Maybe you can now build yourself a Drift Trike...I mean, for the kids...later...yeh, that's it. Thanks for the fine video. ~PJ
haha thanks PJ!
This Old Tony, you should be a filmmaker.
Guess what I just got water cooler and all, I had to go with the cheaper welder for a while but I kept coming back to this video, I even tried to find a bad review too. Thanks TOT.
thanks Tony. your videos are always a welcome sight especially when it comes to reviews. I'm still on the fence when I comes to that Tig welder I've been wanting I've narrowed it down to this HTP and the Everlast Tig 210EXT. I may just end up flipping a coin I can't decide
I was on the same fence. Customer service at USA Weld, CK torch, and SSC foot pedal were the factors which made up my mind to order the HTP. Hope it helps.
i've got an Everlast 200DV on the way, im excited
At 5:27 in your video I felt some powerful Jedi marketing mind trick and started to head for the lobby and buy some popcorn. Err, hmmm, I mean I subscribed. I've had lots of fun on your channel today, learning to make springs and glue metal together with light!
Sorry to bother you Sir, I found what I needed. You are THE MAN. Thanks.
Yeah, good information along with some good laughs! On a scale of one to ten.......... 11 !
Thanks for sharing and take care.
A VIDEO ! HYPE !
your sense of humor is on point XD
I'm soooo jealous...
Great video Tony!
Greetings from Czech Republic
I thought I knew a little bit about welding (literally, a LITTLE bit) and was ok with a torch, but that was awesome man. Thanks for putting so much SHOW IT in a product review video, that was a pleasure to watch and listen to. Also, how about that "like" ratio ? That kind of like:dislike is unheard of normally. Thanks for making it great.
The will it blend bit was great, keep up the awesome videos
I was really interested to see the "TIG spot" mode! I've got a cheap Chinese 40A TIG welder, and made a timer unit a while back so it can do really brief (down to 30ms) pulses. I needed this for assembling the wire structures inside a gas discharge tube, so it involved a lot of welding 0.5mm stainless wire, 0.1mm stainless sheet etc. Neat to see that pulsed welding is actually an option on these machines.
I ain't gonna lie. I am not gonna get a TIG welder, I just enjoy the humor.
you are a very cool dad and a very good fabricator. gr8 review.
That will it blend reference was good
man i love your videos. i started watching when you built your cnc router/mill thing. which was actually pretty instrumental in helping us decide how to rebuild the controllers and such in our machines as well as the format we wanted to go with when we build our new cnc router later this year.
Congrats on the new machine. Sure looks nice. Boy's getting big...
even if your kid wasn't in the video, the dadjoke at the end gave you away. :)
I still chuckled!
That was great, never used a Tig welder but always wanted one. Looking forward to more info. Thanks for sharing.
The suspense on that Go-Cart is killing me! That said I thoroughly enjoyed this. I'd love to metal work, just no room for it and money is allocated to getting house painted, 2 new 50 gal water heaters and hopefully a 3D printer (one day).
Go tankless !!! That is the best have ever done! Its the size of s shoebox - it only runs when you need it .... i have it set to 120F and i hook up my power washer to the warm water faucet .... i can wash equipment year round - its awesome! The money and space savings... and the cost of a 50 gal tank and a tankless one should be about the same ... $700 ish? I think i paid ....
Week three of living in a hotel has seen the gradual slipping of sanity, a toddlers birthday party and a deep urge to go home and weld everything in sight. Tony, I hope the new welder treats you well and I look forward to seeing more of it. I've got this feeling you'll finish this go kart before I make it home to start on my sons train table.
Speaking of which, have you priced out Lionel trains lately?! I'm tempted to try to build a few, at $300 a pop I feel like I could whip up some track and primitive cars out of metal and feel a bit better about them.
HAHAHA that pulse joke at 11:54
awesome, looking forward to more htp tig action in future videos.
your videos are a pleasure to watch, well done man.
Damn it Tony, now I have a HTP 221. Look forward to seeing more TIG welding, but I'll keep watching Jody between episodes.
I'd looked at that HTP before going with the Lincoln Square Wave 200. Unfortunately, my budget wasn't up to that level, and having a Lincoln service center two miles from home definitely helped.
Great video, and love the razor blade showoff shots. Now I understand some of the features I'm missing from my cheaper machine.
That 200 should have no problem with the razors (box cutters), @ ~ 20 amps. If the 200 blows a hole in them on start-up a handy tip is to light up on something else (top of your bench?) and move the (already lit) arc in. Or light up on the filler rod that's "shielding" the razors. If the machine has a hot start it'll spot weld the filler to the blades and you'll get your first 'spot' to shove off from.
Apologies if you already knew all of that. :)
Thanks for watching Jim.
