I used to be in a metal band. We were the best metal band in our small town, but that isn't saying anything at all. We were surrounded by people who told us we were amazing, and it made us believe that we were. This all built up pre-internet, so our bubble was small. Once we started travelling, it became obvious that we were actually trash. We upped our game, but still, we were not really good. Mediocre. We kept recording and playing for fun, but we stopped taking ourselves so seriously, and that was a good thing. Nowadays with the internet, there's no excuse for the small bubble. They have a rather small group of people revving them up, but they've gotta be delusional to not look at the real talent that is out there at the indie level and realize they aren't good enough to take themselves seriously. Music is fun and I would never discourage someone from enjoying it, but not everyone is truly gifted at it. That's fine, we don't need to be. But we do need to be realistic.
