    The thing that makes Sardaukar, Sardaukar: the looks of pure contempt on their faces for anyone who isn't the Emperor, or a Sardaukar. They look at you like you are prey, or an inconveniance.

      @Angela Bronckhurst Keep in mind they were forced to retreat but that doesn't mean they didn't massacre many time their own number in enemies. Given a Sietch can hold up to 10000 people they might have been massively outnumbered. They were ordered to capture hostages to hold against Muad'dib, which they did.

    • @adomalyon1
      @adomalyon1 Před 2 lety +24

      @Angela Bronckhurst Paul gave the fremen lots of advantages though: 1. a cause to unite the tribes as 1. 2. weapons like rockets. 3. Advanced tactical training he learned from Duncan+Gurney. 3. His prophetic powers, knowing where the enemy would be etc. 4. The weirding way, allowing them to kill while unarmed in the villages.
      Also, remember that both when Duncan was killed and when hawat was captured, involved Sardaukar defeating fremen, so it does happen. Sardaukar in part were victims of their own sense of invincibility, which also destroys the Fremen in Dune messiah and COD. In Children of Dune the Corrinos have retrained the Sardaukar remnant to once again rival the fremen, so it only took one generation.

    • @petervizzini4006
      @petervizzini4006 Před 2 lety +6

      @Angela Bronckhurst The desert environment forces everyone to be sharp on a level greater than the Sardaukar. Also the Sardaukar probably let their guard down because they thought getting hostages would be easy.

    • @TovKafur
      @TovKafur Před rokem +13

      @Angela Bronckhurst Since Sardaukar Corps was heavily influenced by Janissaries/Ghulams/Strelets units, it's safe to assume that Sardaukar just grew soft and more political tool than real military threat over centuries of them being scary enough to be, uh, fleet-in-being, with reputation being so effective that what made said reputation slowly rotting away. As others pointed out, they became too self-indulgent and prideful, and overly individualistic (as opposed to collectivist Fremen who often used suicidal tactics for advantage). When they finally tasted bitter defeat, they got whipped in their fearsome shape relatively quickly.

      Since when Sardaukar become samurai using Japanese martial arts? Sardaukar is Harkonnen elite soldiers that resembles Russian heavy weapons division being heavily armored carrying miniguns or high caliber GPMG. Artreides represents America while Ordos indirectly Asians. Freemen are indirectly Afghans or Arabs natives of Dune launching jihad against foreign invaders. Dune is equivalent to middle east rich of natural resources oils but mostly wasteland desert. This new Dune movie is total failure, it failed lighting first being so dark that we can see our faces on screen most of the time followed by combat logic, they didn't bother to use long range projectiles or energy gun decimating shields before turning to melee.

    Salusa secundus was a prison planet originally, very harsh, like Arrakis. The Corrino family then trained up the survivors into the Sardaukar. Which they might have never become as the culural difference between the Atreides army and the Fremen was big.

      Isn't minimalism (which ain't Villeneuve's design choice, but brutalism is, anyway) the _opposite_ of literally every sci-fi movie/video game nowadays? There's a reason why people are so critical of over-design, that being how literally every sci-fi story has to be a riot of machinery, extravagant colors and a shit ton of details on everything. Go watch Jupiter Descending, Valerian, Star Trek, hell even Thor Ragnarok & Guardians of the Galaxy to find out what I'm talking about. Modern sci-fi is anything but minimalist lol

      But the Atreides have like nothing beyond good leadership and training going for them, doesn't feel like that should be enough to rival the Emperor's finest.

Hopefully, theyre shown to be tough still, but the point is that the freeman are no slouches to fighting, theyre on par or better/worse than sarduaker soldiers with a point of tolerance either way, 6 freeman took out like 20 sardauker alone in part 1 before dying, what could thousands of them be like....

    I find it interesting how culture and environment shaped the two main fighting forces of Dune.
    On Arrakis a lack of water means death, on Selusa Secundus the rain is poisonous and you can die from the shock of the cold. Both are harsh in their own ways, but Arrakis with us true scarcity of life is what gives it the edge. Selusa Secundus only favors the strong, while Arrakis favors none, and without discipline even the strong die from the lack of water. The Sardaukar didn’t have to be as disciplined as the Fremen to survive, just strong and bloodthirsty, but discipline is what prevents unnecessary mistakes and overconfidence. Hard to be overconfident as a fighter when you have to worry about the integrity of your still suit mid fight, or the presence of a worm or storm, and the glaring heat.
    Also the environment makes for perfect death commandos, not only can they best you in direct combat, they are silent hunters, as cunning as any predator on Earth and just as thirsty for the water in your blood. The Sardaukar haven’t had to survive against the sand, which makes them weak in that regard. The rain on Selusa Secundus means you don’t have to match the sounds of the desert as you do in Arrakis, the rain will give cover the sound of your steps. And they never tried learning to move through the sand, relying on thopters as transport. The skill of a fighter can be displayed in perfect conditions, but is truly tested in conditions that are unfavorable. All of Arrakis is unfavorable, but the Fremen have turned the cruel planet into their friend. The Sardaukar weren’t aware they could be challenged, while the Fremen grew excited at the thought of powerful foes. This and their religious fervor means they would not surrender even in the face of death

      Thats Herbert's obsession with the noble savage idea and his personal theory that the harshest environments make the best fighters.
      Its like expecting inuits to be the best fighters in the world because they live in the toughest environment.
      Granted, the fremens were also a warrior culture and warred with each others quitw often
      BUT
      The sardaukars are basically the product of constant war training and are the survivor of an extremely harsh selection where not even 1 in 10 made it alive, they could sustain it because they constantly got fresh recruits from off world and didnt meed to form a self sustaining society since everything including their weapons and armor were provided by the emperor.
      On the other hand the fremens couldnt afford to fight 24/7 they actually needed smiths, engineers etc

      And Darth Vader loses every fight he is in. He let's QGJ die to Maul, get's corrupted, gets his behind handed to him by Obi-Wan, get's beaten by Luke. Get's cheated by Dr Aphra and non-cannonically would not be able to beat Starkiller.
      And noone who ever took orders from others is really awesome. Make your own way. Always.

      There are no good guys in the Dune universe, just varying flavors of bad.

      You can like the bad guys in fictional works though? It is not like they commited real crimes against real humans.
      Sauron is one hell of a terrifing guy. He collapsed an entire human empire through subversion alone. He tricked all living races into taking the Rings of Power through which he almost enslaved them. While his old boss was a god that simply used corruption and brute force, he made up for his lack of power through careful planning and not being to low for any kind of trickery. In the movie we mostly see him as a leader of armies but that was only after he weakened his opponents enough that his victory should have been overwhelming. And it would have been were it not for the smallest of people ready to carry the heaviest burden.
      Darth Vader is menance. He is completly unstoppable in almost every scene he is in. Not even Luke "the chosen one" beat him and in the end he was the one to undoe his own corruption and sacrifice himself to kill the Imperator.

      I mean by that logic it's difficult to like the Fremen since they commit some 60 billion counts of trolling during Paul's Jihad.
      Also villains looking and seeming cooler is a common trope in fiction
