I saw them live in Cleveland in 1993. By then, they only had 3 members, and they did "You Are Everything" as part of a 4-song medley, so I didn't get to hear them perform the whole song. It was still very memorable. My friend Matt & I were the only white people in the entire building. I was shocked. LOL! I really didn't care, though.

Diana's Ross's last hit song, "Missing You", which was her last Top 10, in 1984, was a tribute to her fallen friend, Marvin Gaye, who died a year earlier, in an altercation with his father.

I haven't read the comments so pardon me if this was already posted. They didn't record the vocals together for this song or the album from which it came. Diana was pregnant and Marvin insisted on smoking (pot, I think). It resulted in considerable conflict, so it's impressive that their voices are so complementary here. It's great duet. You both nailed the vocalist's roles here. Diana, often one to demand the spotlight, used her vocal prowess to support and add dimension to Marvin's grit. Had she delivered a more powerful vocal, which she was capable of, it would have compromised the sense of mourning we can hear in their performance. They both sound devastated by the loss, and they convey it with different styles that are better than either of them could have done alone. Thanks for sharing this one today.

It is said Marvin blew pot in Dianas face as he thought he was the better singer but Diana got superstar treatment compared to him. Unfortunately Marvin didn't know that Diana was pregnant with Berry Gordys baby and it broke down his relationship with Motown when Berry heaed what he did.

I remember finding this song on one of my parents' old 8-track tapes in the 70s as a kid. I was 7 or 8 years old, but I was so moved by these beautiful voices. So good!
My brother and I discovered "Maggot Brain" (Funkadelic, 1971) in the same way!

When I was a child my eldest sister had a Diana Ross album on vinyl and she used to let me play her records and I listened to this album a lot, this song was on it, you've just reminded me of it, I have to try and buy it. Great reaction as always, wishing you both well and sending peace.

    First time hearing this version.
It sounds like a comic book version of The Stylistics' original.

Ok, I've been listening to this song. Since 1970. they do do it justice! Yes, the Stylistics
were the only ones that could really sing the song, but it's nice to hear. A younger version of it❤

The magic of studio work. It has been noted each artist sung their parts at different times /places and post editing brought them together as Diana was pregnant at the time of the recording.

A nice Diana Ross' song to react to is the one that Lionel Ritchie wrote for her to sing in dedication to Marvin Gaye after his tragic death. "Missing you"

I remember buying this single in the U.K , it was a great cover version of the Stylistics recording . Marvin & Diana both record their parts separate at different times & then the recording engineers mixed the final release .
