    Trains 21 is a documentary of railroading in the 21st century and a look at the fascinating world of transportation. On this channel we deal with all aspects of trains with a strong focus on the Northeast USA.
    The goal is for you to learn a lot in a short amount of time.. A major infusion of knowledge in just a few minutes.. And if those few minutes distilled some of the best railroad information in the industry, we feel that we've done our job..
    The trick is clarity.. Clear, concise and on point.. New videos are uploaded frequently and if you like what you see, comment, like and subscribe (in that order!).

    Hear in the uk we use locomotives assisting on the back of heavy trains sometimes . But we don’t call them helpers we call them bankers. Also we don’t use d.p.u in our trains as the freight wagons we operate are not fitted with the through wires that are needed for that kind of operation.

    Great Topic and an Even Better job describing the DPU concept. Thanks for also describing the Difference between the DPU and the Helpers. Thanks AC. 👍

    I think it's funny that DPUs are all the rage and Southern Railway was pioneering this years ago the radio control gear was in a boxcar or the first was B units from F sets.

    I'm liking the new corner logo AC! I've always wondered if when a dpu is commanded to throttle up by the head end unit, if it was immediately or what?

      Sometimes helper units are manned, but there's also distributed power units on the rear and middle of the train consist. The dpu,s units are automatic and don't need a operator on-board because everything is controlled from the head of train, thus using less operators to do the work.

  • @garyplewa9277

    How are the DPU's controlled from the lead locomotive? Air brakes use air hoses chained from one car to the next, but I don't believe there are cables on all rolling stock to connect the lead locomotive to the DPU. So how do they do it?

    Other than on video, the last time I actually saw a distributive set-up was on a very long UP dual stack container high-tailing it eastward in far northern Minnesota a few years ago... Six units on this one - One solitary leader (that's how I knew it was a distributive), three spread out in different sections of in-between, and two in the back... Must've been fully loaded because every car was double stacked!

    • @Jhihmoac
      @Jhihmoac Před 7 měsíci

      @made-in-the80s - Whatever it was, it looked like something put together for a big-assed load! Since it was more or less headed in an eastern/southeastern direction, I figured it was bound for the Twin Cities or maybe even Chicago... I'd say especially to the Windy City because many of the logistics companies that transport goods to retailer warehouses, Amazon distribution centers, and such throughout that portion of the country are based in Chicago...

    • @Jhihmoac
      @Jhihmoac Před 7 měsíci

      @made-in-the80s - Probably was... I didn't work in logistics itself, but years ago during a temporary stint within the distribution department of a local medium-sized high-end stereo/TV/entertainment equipment retailer, I did manage to visit an intermodal yard where almost like a ship, the containers are lifted off the double stacking train cars, right on to waiting trailer carriages, and then it's off to a specific wholesaler's or retailer's warehouse, container and all, as soon as the initial routing arrangements are made!
