One of my favorite pieces of gear on my thru hike last year was a portable radio (sandisk clipjam). It was so much fun picking up new radio stations each week as I walked further, and it helped to save cell phone battery.
Very cool!
The extra stairs are so cute lolol. Stay warm!
I listen to your vlog more often at night in bed. But there is a problem. I find your voice soothing & find myself delightfully falling off to sleep… that is a complement. Books & podcast just add to the wonderful experience and again it’s your hike. ❤😊
The area you’re have some of the best views on the trail.! You seem to be in a groove!!
State of mind in staying saying< positive things. Thank you for sharing, I'm learning so much.
Music and audio books helped me get through some of the slog for sure!
Nice video with some views, so let's keep on hiking 😊
Yes! Your own head is a small and very lonely place, but over millenia the artists of our species have left us millions of trails to follow far beyond. Beautifully crafted in song and word, they can lead us to vistas of the human experience we could never otherwise visit in a thousand lifetimes.
I LOVE this!
To each his own. Whatever makes your heart happy. I work in a very unquiet environment and never have a moment to myself. Therefore, when I am outside, I love to listen to sounds of nature. However, if I were out there for six straight months, I might just enjoy a little music, podcast or an audio book! I love Backpacker Radio. The hosts voice is quite soothing.
Fourth wing series is so good!
No audio books or music on the trail for me... I am too paranoid about not being able to hear what is going on around me... I know it's still too cold for snakes but when it gets warmer.... they come with a warning rattle for a reason 😂 I completely get the appeal... I met a guy at mile 700 that was doing his hike listening to the bible... he said it changed his perspective of his hike and gave him strength to keep going? Something to think about 🤔 Love the vidoes keep the strong spirit and keep going girl 👍
Me too. Way back in the day I experimented with listening to a Sony Walkman when walking around the city, but it always bothered me not being able to hear what was going on around me. I felt really uneasy doing it. It never occured to me to take it hiking with me. For the same reason I want to be able to hear what is going on around me. Plus I enjoy listening to the sounds of nature.
I keep one ear open for this reason :)
@JessHikesTrails Glad to "hear" that... pun intended... stay safe out there girl! 🙏
I've completed hundreds of books and 250 credit hours of university classes via Audiobooks and lecture recordings.
It's a superpower to be able to use your time to do two things at once. Keep at it.
Yes for music/audiobooks! There are times when music helps get through a grind of a climb or break up the monotony. Audiobooks when relaxing at camp.
Podcast recommendation: National Park After Dark for the win!
Thanks for the rec!
Just a couple book series you might consider are The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R. Tolkien. Thanks so much for bringing us along your journey Jess.
Great suggestions!!
You got this! I agree with your stance on music and podcasts and such. You do you!
Big fan of listening to nature. No audio or music for me. But everyone is different.
If you like true crime podcasts, my go-to recommendation is To Live and Die in LA, Season 1. It is amazing!!
Keep one ear unplugged to listen for thunder, rattlesnakes, etc.
What ever works for you, do it. Breaking the monotony of a long distance thru hike with media is crucial to mental health in my opinion.
These would great with the trail. "Name of the Wind & Wise Mans Fear" by Patrick Rothfuss.
Great books but we're STILL waiting on The Doors of Stone!
Being hearing impaired I need to wear hearing aids to hear the sounds around me. Otherwise with my 70% hearing loss, I live in a very quite world. With that while hiking I prefer the sounds of nature.
If I'm not too late, I don't know what your lead time is, make sure that you have good sunny weather for the Roan Highlands. They are just a couple of days out of Erwin. They are incredible. They are worth waiting for good weather. I think they are the prettiest spot on the trail south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
No to electronics while you're hiking. You wouldn't have heard the Pileated Woodpecker if you had been listening to electronics. Just my opinion.
geek
The auto gen captions said "my mouse" woke me up, instead of "a" mouse, and I got so confused for a second. I thought you brought a pet mouse with you LOL. If anyone has a problem with music, tough noogies. If I'm ever physically capable of doing this, I will be listening to music at least 60% of the time. Music suggestion: Aurora. The album "All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend"
Thank you for the rec!! I’ll take a listen :)
I tried to split my time 1/3 plugged in, 1/3 talking with friends and 1/3 in my head
Just got caught up on your vlog! Let us know if you need anything when you get up near Roanoke!
I’ll be there in just a few days!
@@JessHikesTrails IF you guys need anything let us know. Not sure what your plans are for the triple crown.
Yes for audio books and music on and off
Oops- that’s actually “Ambient trails to a blissful clearing “ ❤️🏃♀️🌿🧘🏼🙏
How do you have the battery juice to listen to audiobooks? I'm watching other hikers who barely even record any footage some days because they want to converse battery. Just curious how much extra battery power/chargers you packed.
I keep my phone on airplane mode and try to only edit/upload when I’m at a hostel :)
@@JessHikesTrails Smart! That makes sense. I love audiobooks, and I think the spicy parts of Fourth Wing might put a spring in your step, lol
No, I would never listen to audiobooks on the trail. Maybe I would listen to music. I much prefer to listen to the sounds of nature on trails, but I could see motivational music being very useful at hard times such as climbing or at the end of the day. But I still prefer to listen to nature.
Booo, you skipped the mystery stairs! If climb those, you pass through a portal that lets you see the fairies in the area and now you've missed 'em ;)
For just some light reading, I love going through the Discworld series, for podcasts I've been bingeing Not Another D&D Podcast (several of the folks formerly behind College Humor plus other TV shows).
Oh no!!! Haha I’ll have to yo-yo and head back over the stairs!!
Looks like you are enjoying a beautiful section of trail. Please use caution at Uncle Johnny's, I have read several bad reviews on his hostel. Thanks again your allowing us to join you on your amazing adventure. You got this! Happy trails Sassafras.
