You know what it might be? A lot of the area painted was technically sea. I believe the map-maker's definition of the danish coast is much more strict than the naïve visual one, especially when it comes to the northern peninsula where Aarhus is (if I got that right).

He actually added too much of slesvig to denmark, hence the ~70 % in country
It said only the mainland, excluding Islands, so the instructions are a bit foggy around Denmark, as well with other countries that have islands.
