The last "stand off" between Alejandro and Kate is amazing. The framing is perfect, Kate framed in the darkness of her balcony - her life will be forever tainted by the events she saw, while Gillick is framed in light sky - his soul is clear, he has zero issue with what he's done and who he is.
Yet, she is standing "above" him in the literal and arguably moral sense. Great scene. Although, me personally, i am not one of those people who love to complain and hate on people while at the same time enjoying the fruits of ignorance and bliss as a consequence of their actions getting their hands dirty. I am not saying she is like that, but i think you catch my drift.
Symbolisms
Alejandro also did Kate a huge favor in putting the gun to her head, blurring the immorality of her action by giving her no other option but death. It doesn't absolve her, but she'll have something to lean on as she pieces her life back together.
I don’t think they seen that because he paused it after he unloaded the gun.
@@datboidego I KNOW!?!? How can they NOT discuss that ending!
It’s not about morality or justice. It’s about revenge
It's a reckoning
A fulfilling revenge story is hard to find.
“In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue… natural justice. This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it’s an emotional response. No. Not vengeance. Punishment.” -The Punisher.
@@zimvader25 killing kids amd wodr isnt punsihment its torture. He could have killed jiat the guy
@@MrDante1047 Nope. Kids had to die too. They would grow up and be involved in the same thing as their dad. It's usually how it works in the cartel
This movie is pure perfection. Denis Villeneuve is a genius. Watch ALL his movies!
DUNE!!!
@@BOOGiNS 100%, a great one
They’ll cry at arrival
Incendies ❤️
@@chloest-jacques9693 Yeah, I want to see how they mentally process Incendies.
If you want more from this director, he's also done a beautiful movie called "Arrival".
And Prisoners
Literally everything Villanueve has done is incredible.
@@ghani666 For those who have not seen Incendie from him, its great, i think its not dubbed, only in french with subtitles, but still worth the watch
Arrival is a trash film no disrespect to Villanueve. story was terrible.
@@MBIRTIRoma I’ve heard people say this, but no one can articulate why.
I usually judge the quality of the film based on how well it achieved what it set out to do. Arrival definitely stuck the landing on that front, whether or not you like it is entirely subjective.
Out of curiosity, have you read the Ted Chiang short story it’s based on?
Living legend Roger Deakins is the cinematographer. He finally won an Oscar for his work on "Blade Runner 2049" (another Villeneuve picture) after 14 previous nominations.
He did 1917 too. The guy's a legend.
@@OweeReviews also did the gorgeous Skyfall for Sam Mendes too
He also did The Shawshank Redemption and most of the Coen Brothers films.
@@isasooner5Fargo has some of the most perfect cinematography ever.
2049 really did have some beautiful cinematography. He deserved that one.
Im just loving Ash’s fascination with all of the beautiful shots/cinematography 😂
I wouldn’t mind if he took it down a notch
@@sparksdrinker5650 Yeah, he just says things in a loud voice, without any actual understanding … it’s quite painful. The girl is clearly brighter and she knows nothing!!
at least he didn't say Sybalism.
Agreed
I work in television and film, the grip and lighting department for a long time and now have moved to camera department. This movie was so inspirational to me visually when I was in school for film. It really pushed me to pursue what I love. I have always admired Roger Deakins for how humble he is and willing to share his knowledge.
Enjoy working for pdfiles that use media to promote a weaponized worldview that can't justify or give an account to why anything is right or wrong, enjoy being a cog in the machine of the death cult
I love how ash hypes Hannah up and put the memes at the beginning 😂🔥 goals
"Look at that shot!"
One thing about director Denis Villenueve: The man does *NOT* make a bad-lookin' movie.
Literally haven't seen anything this guy puts out that isn't extremely well written and flawlessly shot. His movies are an example of a film firing on all cylinders, from the acting, to the action, to the cinematography, to the score and sound design... I mean, I could go on, but we both get the point. What a blessing that you and me and everyone else alive today are here during this era where directors like these are thriving in the current climate. It's a bit of a film rennaissance if you were to ask me.
@@angelguerrero7655 1,000,000% agree!!
The cinematographer is Roger Deakins. He’s the genius behind Blade Runner (2017), James Bond’s Skyfall (2012), Prisoners (2013),1917 (2019) etc. Man’s a living legend.
Shawshank Redemption as well
The two reactors back and forth banter is HILARIOUS 😂😂😂
Hannah (yelling like a gypsy with her tongue): I've never seen anyone do that before
Ash: ive never heard you scream like that before 🤣🤣🤣
LMAO..Home alone but Mexican style and Ash constantly trolling poor Hannah cracked me up🤣🤣
"Nothing will make sense to your American ears, and you will doubt everything that we do, but in the end you will understand."
Fun Fact: Having just completed "Everest" (2015), an exhausted Josh Brolin turned down this film. Cinematographer Roger Deakins sent him an email imploring him to join the project. Since it was so uncharacteristic of Roger Deakins to take this stand, Josh Brolin changed his mind.
Also, when discussing the score with composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, director Denis Villeneuve said he wanted the the sound of a threat. The one film Denis Villeneuve used as a comparison was director Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" (1975) (music by: John Williams).
"Everest" was amazing!! I watched it during the summer in a house with no AC and found myself shivering through alot of it!! :) 🤣😂🤣
I also remember in an interview where Brolin states that he actually disliked the character he was to play in this film when he read the script. Too “unrealistic”. But he ended up playing him so well.
It's a great line. Honestly, that's a line for the audience. Because had they told her the truth she'd understand just fine that The CIA is using you because the CIA needs a domestic agency to operate in the US. The operation is get manuel called back to Mexico so I, a Colombian Cartel hitman, can sneak in and murder him, giving control of the drug trade back to Colombia where the CIA thinks they have a semblance of control.
You two explained the feeling of the movie better than any other reaction I've seen. You're on point about how the story follows Blunts character and you get to experience it with her.
I believe you will love the 2nd movie as well. The flow of the movie changes due to the story and the people you follow thru out. That pretty much explains the difference between the two movies that, I'm sure, others will try say.
How could you leave out the very last scene??? Come on man, that was the best part, showing how the everyday person is affected with the mum and child, it was so heartbreaking
It must be on the Patron edit
It also shows that no matter how many people you arrest or kill, the war will not end. Non of the actions in the movie had any bigger consequences for the cartels because there will be just a new leader, so the violence continues. Its a war you jsut cannot win, a very powerful scene
@@real.jeremy.clarkson BS. Is that what was said about the Nazi's in WW2? The resolve is not there to finish it because too many on both sides of border's govt PROFIT from it.
Since you loved Benecio Del Torro in this movie, PLEASE make sure you watch the sequel, he is an absolute beast in it!
The sequel is shit. absolute garbage after this one
@@KlooKloo I bet your life that Ash will like it. Don't act like your opinion is fact, just because you don't like something doesn't mean someone else won't. Your opinion is meaningless.
@@QuantumFlux_22 No it isn't
Theres a sequel? Wtf
@@christopherbrown6049 yeah it has josh brolin and benecio del toro, not quite as good as the first but some of the scenes of del torro are worth watching the entire movie tbh
This is my second favorite Benicio performance after Things We Lost In The Fire. He's such a great actor!
His chemistry with Halle Berry was off the charts
Nice! Someone mentioning that performance. That's how you play a junkie,he really gave the character so much humanity. He wasn't nominated for a single award but i maintain it's one of the absolute best ones of 07,if not the best. "One day at a time..."
Sicario is an excellent Deni movie. Have you guys seen Arrival? That's a great one too.
Denis
Yeah man I’ve been waiting for them to check out Arrival. Such a mind boggling movie plus well shot by Villanueva
Also *Incendies* which put him on the international/Hollywood map!
Denis Villeneuve also directed the movie Arrival. His shots are S tier. Absolutely legendary!
16:04 One of my favorite lines didn't make the cut, but I think it really highlights the differences between Matt and Alejandro and Kate and her partner.
"Just don't keep us in the dark."
"You're afraid of the dark?"
The border scene is what makes this movie a masterpiece.
"Savages" - another movie with Benicio Del Toro. Directed by Oliver Stone. Action and lot of romance. Great supporting cast: John Travolta, Salma Hayek. Consider reacting!
So psyched you guys finally stumbled upon the greatness that is Denis. I went by myself in theaters to see this and came out declaring Villeneuve my favorite director. Completely floored me and the DoP for Sicario is one of the greatest of all time, Roger Deakins. This is definitely a top 10 for me as well! Just love revenge stories....
"It was gripping"
Brilliant summary!
It really was such a good film.. dammit now I wanna watch it again..
Benício should be like the ultimate John Wick villain. The man is cold as Ice.
This movie is a masterpiece. Villeneuve is a top 5 director today in my opinion
As soon as I seen this Reaction pop up I said straight away 'this is going into Ash's top 10'
The Shots, the Soundtrack, the Story, the Characters, the Different Angles and everything in between
❤️❤️
Amazing reaction as always!! definitely one of the best movies I've seen as well. The shots, the intensity, the music was all INCREDIBLE. One thing I want to point out was the facial expression of the cartel boss when his family was killed in front of him. He blended the anger, rage, fear, and hopelessness in his facial expression so well you can literally feel his emotions and feel how scared he was. It was at 35:13
The Cartel Boss actor's name is Julio Cesar Cedillo.
Sicario and Prisoners were both directed by Denis Villeneuve. I think you would both LOVE the film Arrival, also directed by Villeneuve❣️❣️❣️
could also do Blade Runner 2049 which also has the same cinematographer as Sicario and Prisoners! Arrival is amazing though
Hannah’s eyeline when ash stands up in front of her 😂
Ash if you like Denis Villeneuve, who did this and Prisoners, you guys HAVE to react to “Dune” and “Arrival”. His 2 best movies imo. Dune is an absolute masterpiece
Arrival the first half of the movie is good then starting some BS
@@bazil9394 I thought it was fantastic all the way through
Call me what you want but dune was so incredibly boring
Dune is epic! Denis Villeneuve is the master at thought provoking scifi.
@@ghostedpt as much as I love the dune series and have read all the books, the whole series is pretty boring. The movie was beautiful and they did an alright job adapting the first half of the book, but it was definitely very slow and an obvious build up for a more fast paced second part.
As someone who worked on the border for many years...this movie (excluding some of the Hollywood action bits) was uncomfortably accurate. The attention to detail was excellent, the settings were accurate, etc. They filmed at some BP locations, and even stuff like the apartments were very obviously Texas/Arizona style, etc. The most unrealistic character was unfortunately Emily Blunts. Her character would have made more sense if she had been a desk-jockey, an intel goon...but not a field agent as she's shown in the beginning. You don't get to be HRT-level in the FBI without having become exceptionally accustomed to the "grit" of real police work.
Having worked the border, you very quickly become accustomed to the shocking levels of violence down there. Vehicles stuffed with corpses, mass executions, murders between cartels (in Phoenix and Tucson, AZ...cartels run full "fake" SWAT teams which raid each other's stash houses, etc. Running gunfights up and down I-10 is not uncommon, etc.). So her "babe in the woods" vibe in this film is the most unrealistic aspect of it, unfortunately.
For reference, between 2006-2010...more people were killed along the US/Mexico internationl border than in Afghanistan during the height of the conflict there. The cartels own/run all of Mexico - every law enforcement agency, every police station, every resort, every government entity. Everyone is involved.
If you enjoyed this, you're going to love the second one - a very different, but equally good film. So happy to see you guys react to this.
I haven't been on the border in LE but I've worked with the Senate Drug Caucus and seen a lot of what goes on there and was very impressed by the overall accuracy. I think the Emily Blunt character was "green" because her sensibilities were supposed to represent those of the audience going into this without that experience a seasoned agent would have.
The hell you talking about constant gunfire on the I-10? 8 years though the most you see is just idiot drivers. Probably see more action in Albuquerque than you do Phoenix, come on now.
@squallofthedai I was going to say, years living near the border and moving to Phoenix, traveling along the I-10, never seen a shooting. It's always just drunk drivers or speeders. People in the drug trade try to keep it hush hush because they don't want police involved because then the federal agents will get involved and they don't want that. Which is why when most cartel crimes go down, they kidnap them, take them out to the middle of nowhere and dispose of them. Them dressing as "SWAT" has only happened less than a handful of times in AZ.
Denis Villeneuve is the man! This movie is such a great depiction of how blurred the lines between right and wrong are in this perpetual battle.
That scene at that mansion is epic and scary and I loved every minute of it.
Everything about this movie sets you on edge right from the very first minute... absolute masterclass in cinematography. Roger Deakins, what a legend!
The love when people really appreciate the two drastic sides of this film. The absolute beauty of the scenery coupled with the horrific brutality and violence makes it a movie you simply cannot look away from. Brilliant reaction!
PS. The second part is just as freaking good as this one!
You should watch Hell or High Water. Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster absolutely kill it! The writer of this movie wrote it too.
Writer of Yellowstone as well he don’t miss… Taylor Sheridan
@@morganmhancock he really doesn’t!
Roger Deakins is a legendary British cinematographer and a master craftsman.
His partnership with Denis Villeneuve is epic and has produced incredible films in recent cinema: Prisoners, Sicario, and Blade Runner 2049.
I do hope they team up once again in the future.
Ash and Hannah my favorite CZcamsrs!!! Great reaction…”Probably just insulted the whole of Mexico”🤣🤣🤣🤣. Now you have to do the sequel.
You should also try “End of Watch”, awesome Jake Gyllenhaal and Mike Peña movie. Let’s get you to 100k!!!!!!
You guys are so much fun. Love watching even intense films with the banter between you guys.
One of my favourite endings from the dinner scene to the final face off between Alejandro and Kate. But the scene entering the Mexican border along with the score is just beastly! Funny considering the scores name is the “Beast”.
The drums are the heartbeat and the strings are the lungs and the “Beast” is coming.
Great reactions. You need to watch Hell or High Water and Wind River. They're both along the lines of this movie. And written by the same person. They're both incredibly good movies and both fill with LOADS of symbolisms.
Great 👍🏽 recommendation.
I'd second wind river as well!
No one reacts to Wind River. Such an underrated gem
Wind River was so damn bleak, but I loved that film. I was depressed for like three days after I watched it.
Yes! So glad you guys are reacting to this movie, one of my favorites.
Where that 100k subs!!? You guys are the best entertainment reactors!
It is so surreal for me to see people's reactions to this movie. When he says "look at the people no one is screaming no one is laughing. I swear that is so realistic in the movie how people are so calm after a shooting or a disaster.
Taylor Sheridan has a written some great movies. This, Hell or High Water and Wind River are all great.
4:50 "This place is like Home Alone, booby trap bomb, Mexican style." 😆
Love that y’all got to watch this film! Everything that went into this movie to create the atmosphere was nothing short of perfection especially the scene where the team starts heading towards the border tunnel, seeing each member marching in the desert slowly disappearing into the dark horizon was pure cinematic genius!
Always a good laugh when seeing Hannah’s reaction or just letting out a pure scream 😂
And to answer her question, El Paso means the step 🙂
Can’t wait to see how y’all react to Sicario 2
-shout out from Texas
The music and cinematography in this movie are absolutely incredible. Roger Deakins is a genius and a true master of his craft. The highway scene in particular is nothing short of brilliant. One of the most intense scenes in a film I’ve seen in years.
Also I actually recommend the sequel as well. It’a not quite as good as the original, but it is certainly worth checking out.
Denis Villeneuve does not have a bad movie. One of the greatest ever!
The director of this movie making the shots so special is "Denis Villeneuve" Who also directed the recent DUNE and is also making the DUNE sequel this year. If you liked the movie making of this movie you should check out DUNE aswell.
I've been living in El Paso for all my life. It translates to "the pass" as the full name was "El Paso del Norte" or the pass of the north because of the border crossings from northern Mexico to the US
I really think you guys should check out Wind River when you get the chance. Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Jon Bernthol are all amazing and some really intense scenes too
34:17 I love the way she says "bang bang. see you later kids." 🤣🤣
I'm from Juárez 👋🏼 I love your videos, keep it up! ❤🔥
They didn't have that much of a budget. The budget was 30 million. What they did have was Roger Deakins, one of the greatest cinematographers of all time. And the director Denis, (can't say or spell his last name LOL), hasn't missed once. If you've seen a great film over the past ten years, he most likely made it. From Sicario, to Prisoners, to Dune.
This movie is tied with Wind River (Same screen writer, excellent movie) as my favorite movie. Also Never change Ash :D
I like that they see the true art in these scenic shots. I love looking at the settings. It's so great.
You two are the most realistic down to earth people on you tube. Love it.
I was singing the praises of this movie for weeks after I saw it. The ending was like omg I can't believe he actually did that!
"Is he the bad guy?"; I take this movie as showing that there are no good guys in this fight. All sides get their hands dirty, one way or another.
You gotta watch the BLADE RUNNER movies. The first one was directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) and the second one was directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario).
YES i recommended this awhile ago. awsome you guys finally did it
Roger Deakins is one of the greatest Cinematographers of all time! The way this movie is filmed is absolutely incredible! full of suspense and very brutal.
My guy and girl, you are my two favourite people on CZcams. After this and Prisoners, watch the trailer to Arrival. After that you will watch the film and I don’t even care if you react to it, you’ll thank me and anyone else who recommended it! Lots of love from your boy x
Thankyou so much for your support! Me and ash love and appreciate you! ❤
My favourite film by Denis Villeneuve. Pure tension, pure cinema. Probably in my top 10 best films as well.
I'm glad they picked up on both the cinematography and the soundtrack, those two elements add a huge amount to the tone and style of the film and are responsible for elevating it above 'just another good thriller.' The wide-angle shots of the desert, especially from the sky, really draw you into the whole environment of the film.
Hannah's comment about how we're in the same boat as Kate the whole time, not really understanding what's going on or why we're there, is spot on too. Even approaching the finale as we go into the tunnels there's deliberately no proper explanation of the plan, no clear route, no idea what 'we' are supposed to be doing. I'm glad you did this one, it's one of my favourite films of all time.
I was watching a short documentary about how to tell a story with a lens.
Anyways, this movie was referenced as a gold standard.
A few interesting details, the point the Kate's view of the world starts to change is literally when she is between two worlds.
The scene in the tunnels in shot in pure darkness. There is a lot of moments in the film where Kate is in the dark about her role and what is going on. Who is shown emerging from the darkness and into the light? Kate as she is about to learn the true nature of the people she is helping.
Ash geeking over Deakins cinematography is very relatable 😂
Check out the director's other film "Incendies". It's incredible.
Don't forget about Polytechnique and Maelstrom.
don't forget that deakins did prisoners and blade runner 2049 too! he hasn't seen, blade runner I believe which is beautiful
This is the first time I’ve rewatched your reaction immediately after finishing. One of my all time favorite movies. So happy you guys are near 100k. CHEERS 🎉
Brooooo your relationship is goals 😭🤣 I could never though, I would have been like "Girl go put on one of my sweaters" ASAP🤣🤣
"It's like.. Sand!?" Best comment ever 🙂
You guys have a great chemistry. Keep up the good work.
You guys have to do Sheridan's Frontier Trilogy after Sicario (maybe after Sicario 2):
- Hell or High Water
- Wind River
That last one is going to blow you away.
Taylor Sheridan wrote not directed this movie he is from Texas my home state. Usually everything with his name attached to it is amazing. He wrote 2 other movies yall should watch, Hell or High Water and Wind River. He also wrote and makes cameo appearances in the most popular TV show in America called Yellowstone.
Ash is crazy! Love you guys!
This has been my absolute favorite reaction to this movie yet! Denis Villeneuve is also my favorite director!
My brother ❤️
Del Toro was 100x The Punisher than Bernthal was in his own show.
Bernthal nailed it but the writing let that show down. Unfortunately he was done much better in the second season of Daredevil. The actual Punisher show over complicated it’s stories imo. Best rule for a punisher comic (speaking as a huge fan of the character specifically the Garth Ennis run) is KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid lol. But fr Benicio is a a good punisher type character in this
@@LO-zs3db Not being anything like the character is not "nailing" it. Bernthal was a terrible Punisher.

Ash I got to tell you if you love this movie. You will love Wind River! It was written by the same person who wrote this. He also wrote the TV show Yellowstone 1883 1923 and the Tulsa King. The guy can fucking write.
Ash you need to listen to Hannah on these things man, her instincts are on point bro.
