  • A hyena with a snare was darted on the Reserve. Of course, this had to be done at night as hyenas are nocturnal. The bush was dense and it was very dark all around us.
The hyena had a snare around its neck and through its mouth. It was a horrible, deep wound. The wildlife vets did an excellent job; a lot was learned during this procedure. So glad we could witness and participate in the successful rescue of a snared hyena.
Wildlife conservation, anti-poaching, and protecting Africa's wildlife are part of everyday life when living in the African bush.

We will keep an eye out for this hyena. it was spotted a few night ago by one of our rangers, and apparently the wound has healed well and is in good condition physically. They call him "Joker" as his smile goes all around his face!! I will do a follow-up if I can get footage.

@@AfricaBushLiving that's great news! I know spotted hyena have the amazing ability to heal, and that they rarely get sick. But this wound looked so incredibly cruel and painful. If it is healing already, and he is able to feed properly, I have no doubt he'll be fine.
Thank you SO much for helping him. I'm so pleased there are people around who care, and who can help when it is needed. Snares are just horrible contraptions, and always cause so much suffering before the animal dies.

All over wildlife areas in Southern Africa, snares are a huge problem. Intruders and poachers seeking to make profit from selling the meat of animals, or the tusks of elephants, are the culprits. In the process of putting snares out for antelope (eg. impala, zebra etc.), any other animal walking into a snare, falls victim to this. We will only interfere if an animal is harmed or wounded due to human interference. It is very sad, but a huge reality.

@@AfricaBushLiving😊the hierarchy makes plenty of money off these Animals I'm sure they can take better care of all of them. If we treated our animals in my country like they do we would be in jail. People get tired of hearing "we don't interfere". Please they interfere everyday of these animals lives. I notice they don't help lion cubs find the pride when they're lost but they help baby elephants all the time. I'm all for helping the animals but what's good for 1 ìsgood for the oother
